NTA, fhere is nothing wrong with reading physical books, but taking several of them out while none being PrepHole related is stupid.

Why? Killing some time at the end of the day, having a rest day or waiting out bad weather in your tent sucks with nothing to do. Soft-cover and pocket books don't weigh that much.

Can’t be bothered with a full description or a picture but generally my setup has significantly more shit I inherited or made and significantly less name brand shit still in its packaging. I’m really not trying to be the gate keeping autist but your load out just screams “consoomer-tech-yuppie” and I kinda hope you die on a mountain.

    Your sleeping pad is shit
Get rid of the flag, the axe, the multi-tool; Colgate is shit, there is no reason to hike with glue if you have tenacious tape; and wtf are you doing with that draw and those carabiners? I don't see any rope and that's not enough hardware to do anything related to climbing...and why do you need two belay devices with only five carabiners and one (ONE!) quickdraw.
    The rest is nice.

Pic is one of the most versatile pieces of gear I’ve ever used, second to a cotton bandana.

      Anonymous

How is it versatile for you? Do you use it as a windscreen or as part of your shelter? Seems like a hassle otherwise, having to carry it with one hand during use.

        Anonymous

It's like a tarp, but with less options

        Umbrellanon

Yes, you have to use a hand, so it’s not compatible with trekking poles. You can strap them to your pack, which works great if the sun is cooperating and you’re heading in basically the same direction for a while. But it’s really not ideal.
        >sun protection
It’s SPF 50. Great for road walks or sparse tree coverage
        >heat reflective
        It’s actually quite noticeable
        >rain protection
This come with the caveat that it depends on the rain, but as always, we pack accordingly.
        >wind block
        Great when taking a break
        >can catch a breeze
This can direct any slight amount of wind directly on to you, cooling you off.
        >privacy while shitting
No one wants to see you shitting. You can squat down behind it. You don’t even need a tree or a bush; just shit wherever.
        >knock down spider webs
A stick works as well but the umbrella is already out.

There are positives and negatives to every piece of gear out there. I was mostly worried the umbrella would get caught on trees, being that the South is subtropical in spots and the trees are generally small and the forests dense (jungles really). But it’s not that bad. If a branch hit it, the umbrella just sort of turns and rotates around it.

Wind driven rain is a big complaint, but again, if you take the wrong gear for the weather that’s on you. The other option is a jacket, which isn’t as ventilated. Just don’t be a moron, and if wind could be a problem (ie, if it’s cold) wear a light jacket as well or go with something else entirely. The light jacket-umbrella.l combo is actually versatile within itself. I use the umbrella alone until the wind picks up, then put on my running jacket.

In the summer it’s an absolute must-have. The rain here is extremely sporadic, with very scattered showers building from humid air blown in from the Gulf of Mexico. I keep the umbrella next to me, in the gimmicky “trekking pole stowage” thing Osprey has on all of their packs.

Nah, it's just a platform for my sleeping bag that I threw together last minute with some 2x4s and a sheet of plywood. It's light and easy to just pick up and put stuff under.
