What's wrong? It's for urban shit like that one B&T 5.56 bolt-action thing.

I feel like 80s russia spent way too much effort on urban counter sniper development

Why bother with range and accuracy when "more dakka" has been the general strategy for the last 230 years. A semi auto, "accurate enough" dmr fits perfectly in Russian doctrine of self inflicted slaughterhouse firefights

by the 80s the writing was on the wall and the Russians knew that their military didn't need to be geared up for a march on Europe but instead the medium term future was going to be spent in the capitals of former Soviet states and breakaway ethnic republics inside Russia itself

That would be a pretty easy task, just copy the Blaser straight-pull action.

I like the cartridge, same idea as the .510 Whisper, very quiet because it's subsonic and able to take advantage of .50 BMG bullets with crazy high BCs.

It can crunch Ukrainian skulls fairly easily, so I assume it could do some damage to a potato

Idk why, but low and slow thicc thumpers just tickle a certain part of my brain. Been debating on pulling the trigger to start a subsonic suppressed .458 build for such a niche. Biggest hurtle is I have no experience with the cartridge

russian weapons design in 2024 is like german weapons design in 1944. engineers just churning out moronic designs for the sake of designing new things, because as long as they keep designing things they're safe from getting mobilized. give the moronic brass some moronic piece of shit and they'll just be back asking for something else next month, design them something good that works right and they might just decide they don't need any more new weapons and you're more useful at the front now.

I think I finally understand now what separates Russians from Americans. Russians aren't afraid to fail. it explains why there are so many wacky and unorthodox weapons in the Russian arsenal and why they are trying risky tactics in Ukraine.
    >motorcycle assault? why not
    >riding on the bmp instead of inside? why not
    >trying to dash for Kiev and scare the Ukrainians into capitulation? sure
    >building a cage around a tank that looks stupid? yeah
    >12.7mm CQB anti body armor rifle? you bet

...and how is it going for them?
      >motorcycle assault? why not
Do you refer to the golf carts or that recent thing with fpv drones? Frontal golf cart assaults are moronic. The motorcycle drone thing might be useful.
      >riding on the bmp instead of inside? why not
That's because the BMP is so shit that people would rather be exposed to artillery or drones instead of die inside that coffin.
      >trying to dash for Kiev and scare the Ukrainians into capitulation? sure
le long scary convoy that got BTFO
      >building a cage around a tank that looks stupid? yeah
How useful are those actually? I guess they might hold of a drone or two or deflect a dropped grenade.
      >12.7mm CQB anti body armor rifle? you bet
That one sounds actually useful, in specific circumstances sure, but at least it's not full moron like the 40km convoy.

they ride on top because of mines. Western IFV's wouldn't even attempt to drive through a mine field

That's what was saying, although I should've said that in the post instead of holding it in my mind.

I'm not going to lie, I consider myself pretty patriotic but if I drafted into a war of conquest and was then told to attack an entrenched position through a minefield covered by drones and pre-ranged for artillery... in a fricking Chinese golf cart ... I would 100% shoot my commanders.

How do they get away with it? Do they not give them ammo until they're already in artillery range and then have blocking detachments at their backs?

          >Do they not give them ammo until they're already in artillery range and then have blocking detachments at their backs?
Sometimes, but mostly Russians truly are stupidly obedient. The US Army reports on them from WW2 and immediately after are good sources for this.
It had some benefits in the musket age when soldiers were basically fodder, but the more tactics and technology progressed, the less silver lining was left.

          >Will just get more dedovschina and be sent out anyways if you say no and your family will be denied their free potatoes for your death.
In context, buying in to golf cart and dirt bike assaults sort of makes sense. But boy is it bleak.

I think the real reason is that they are just smart enough to come up with valid unorthodox solutions to real problems where an actual smarter people would see the flaw and go for a more complex and effective but not as easily understood or executed solution.

Most are AR-18/SCAR derivatives. The receiver that extends further behind the grip, the folding stock and the modern gas tube cover with picatinny rails result in the same characteristic look.
