This. I don't understand why they're that expensive, the rifle itself is worth at most $800 street price.

      1100?

Isn't the idea of these to make a cheap M14 knock-off in 5.56?

Yeah, they used to be affordable apparently ($400-500). But that was decades ago and as AR-15s have gotten more popular it seems like the decline in the Mini's popularity led to Ruger just making fewer of them and jacking up the price. Also they retooled the whole production line when they came out with the tapered barrel version in 2008ish and that seems to have contributed as well. Although even just a few years ago (2019/2020 they were like 20% cheaper.

And that's a lot cheaper than a new M1a. Mini 14s only made sense when ARs were $1000+ and they were still 5-600. Then ARs got cheap and minis got more expensive. All of a sudden you could get an AR for 500, and minis went up to 6-800. Then the pandemic happened and MSRP for a mini skyrocketed to 1100.

Jesus Christ, I hope your gun market unfricks itself at some point

Some can look cooler than some ARs, the two tone law enforcement one with the folding stock was pretty neat, but I've seen some sexy ARs.

    It's pretty cool.
It's been used in numerous high profile shootings and gun fights.
Miami FBI shootout, that one in Canada, and AntiGlobalist Commie Killer VIP picrel. It's also the Mateba in Starship Troopers and it's in shitloads of other movies.
I feel like I'm missing another shooting, but it's a very capable rifle even before the series 583 upgrades.

Someone posted their Mini a year or two with an optic that looked to be about 6" long, and it was a fully enclosed rectangle. It might have been a retro thread. Looked fricking awesome but I can't figure out the optic.

I want one with the A-Team body but the price to get it all together just scares me away.

      Anonymous

Ah yeah. It is a money pit. I can't own folding stocks in my state so mine is just in the normal traditional wood stock. I love the look of that A-Team stock and actually the Hannibal scout rail for it as well, it is nice, very very well-made.

So far I have dumped, let's see:

      $1100 into the base rifle
$250 for adjustable gas block and bushings
      $250 for Leupold 1.5-4x scope
      $75 for Leuopold QD rings
$100 for trigger job (sent to ASI, made it smooth as butter)
      $100 for the scout rail
$25 for a jumbo pack of 1911 recoil buffers
      $25 for cotton GI sling

Some of these parts have come and gone. I actually ended up taking the scout rail off just because I don't feel I really need it for what is mostly a bench gun. Still. $1925 for a rifle that shoots 2MOA. It's definitely for the love of that sweet click-clack.

I want to make some more improvements like adding a muzzle break of some kind, crowning the muzzle with a recessed target crown, and glass bedding the stock (although I will need help with that). Those are long term projects though. The next thing I will probably do is swap the wood stock out for a Choate fiberglass stock for weight savings.

I donno, maybe I'm dumb, but I think it's cool. ARs are also cool. I like them, too.

They were awesome back when they could be regularly found for $300 and even budget ARs were pushing $1000. Ruger dragged their feet for way to long after the AWB expired and didn't start producing factory 20 rd mags until 2010 IIRC. By that point mass production and adoption of ARs had dropped the price to below the mini. Had they shaken off ol' Bill's ghost sooner and jumped out of the gate in '04 with both the 580 series and factory 20 rd mags it would be a lot more popular today. Sadly it wasn't to be. Also that "target model" with the silly ass harmonic tuner was hilarious.

Jim Sullivan helped to "miniaturize" it from the M14. He also helped to "miniaturize" the AR-10 to become the AR-15. Is he the real hero?
