Getting hit with a rifle cartridge at home defense range is getting your tissue permanently liquified. Not only that, but an invader has no cover from you. With the right cartridge you can shoot through nearly any barrier on your property and home advantage gives you a boost here too. A pump action shotty is tough to beat for HD, but a rifle is better than a handgun in most situations.
