Great when it was new but hopeless now as anything other than an advanced trainer or placeholder. If it allows your country to maintain an airforce until they can get something better, its doing its job.

How many MiG-21 in Indian service were lost to peacetime attrition again?

          >Since 1970 more than 170 Indian pilots and 40 civilians have been killed in MiG-21 accidents, thus the unofficial nickname 'flying coffin'. Over half of the 840 aircraft built between 1966 and 1984 were lost to crashes.[11] At least 14 MiG-21s crashed between 2010 and 2013

Is it just cause poos can't fly? Or is the Mig21 that shit?

Poor maintenance and quality of replacement parts has been considered to be a factor in this phenomenon.[12] When in afterburner, the engine operates very close to its surge line and the ingestion of even a small bird can lead to an engine surge/seizure and flame out

Poos can't fly, poos can't build aircraft, poos can't maintain aircraft, MiG-21 is a very unforgiving aircraft in certain situations and configurations.

More akin to an F5, I would think.

It's more akin to the F-5 in that it can turn somewhat, however it's more similar to starfighter in the fact that it's designed as a high altitude interceptor with speed above all else, as well as them both having notorious issues flying low due to their design. For the F-104 it's its lack of stability at low level that when compounded with overweight and bomb laden configuration it was often used in euro air forces caused many crashes, while the Mig-21 experiences heavy buffeting when approaching supersonic speeds at low level, literally shaking itself apart if you try to push it forward.

Neither of the latter planes were designed to be multirole either, unlike the F-5.

The F-5 completely obliterated the MiG-21 and 23 in trials by the Soviets in dogfights.

They got one F-5 from the North Vietnamese. After fixing the front wheel because the F-5 couldn‘t cope with the shitty piles of rubble the Russians pretend to be runways, the Russians were shitting bricks how their top fighters were beaten every fucking time against the cheap and downgraded fighter jet of the West.

Obsolete platforms like these running strike missions against rebels saved assad back in 2011 so they are not useless, but in any contested airspace I doubt a mig-21 is even capable of scoring a kill against something other than another mig-21

In my opinion, and speaking entirely in terms of looks MiG-21 should either be the original "pencil" type of the F and F-13 interceptors.

or the full on fatback SMT in frontline aviation camoflage and loaded to the max for strike missions against airbases and harbors in Germany, or possibly with a near suicidal nuclear strike role.

    >Opinion on the MiG-21?
The MiG-21 really was a fighter of its era but also for a jet fighter they built more than ten thousand of, its era was incredibly short. It was never made with having a radar on board in mind so it ended up being stuck with heat-seeking missiles in a time when longer range radar guided missiles were coming into their own. It wasn't very big so it could not really be heavily upgraded either and worse still it had very little carrying capacity or range so it could not even transition effectively to a ground attack role.
Compare that to the F-4 Phantom, excellent range, large carrying capacity, lots of room for upgrades, you could gut that thing and upgrade it to carry all the modern weapons and countries have. The MiG 21 was a fighter that could never leave the early 60's and the Communist world had built thousands upon thousands of them. It's well remembered for its short relevance over Vietnam but I consider it a big boondoggle.

I have to wonder could you make these things into cheap ass missile buses and use external guidance for the missiles so they actually hit shit?

        Anonymous

You got four wing ordnance stations, two of which are generally needed for external tanks to extend the range beyond the same zip code.
The MiG-21 might not be the best platform for this.
