"Terrible Recon Mission in Ukraine"
The entire team is American, and do not speak Ukrainian. They are on a recon mission, and due to bad intel, things dont go well. As most missions, not a lot of action, lots of walking, talking to civilians.
At one point they walk past some vatniks a 3rd of a mile away and just keep walking in plain sight.

What does the hand signal at 3:30 indicate? Is that for column or contact right?

I guess it's one guy on the left side of the road, one on the right and so on.

It’s the hand signal for staggered columns. It’s a road march formation for when there’s a low expectation of enemy contact.

        Anonymous

What would be the formation for high expectation?

Squad column, fireteam wedge. Haven’t watched the whole video so idk how many people there are on the recon team, or if they’re just wandering through city streets, but they would probably just be in a wedge. If they seriously expect some sort of enemy contact then they would be moving in bounding overwatch.

That’s the textbook answer for normal soldiering, but obviously it depends a lot on whatever mission they’re trying to do. A recon element wouldn’t be looking for a fight, so speed might be a better form of security for them

        >doing leaders recon for a recon mission
        >I have to find the general location of the enemy position and send people to recon it
        >we accidentally overshoot our distance

        >he’s maybe 50-100m away

They sent them out towards the enemy hoping to spark a firefight to kill some enemies or maybe get them killed because they don't like these douchey Americans. Recon mission? Seriously? What are they going to report that the Russians are everywhere? They already know there's a fucking Russian invasion and that they're coming from that general direction. They got sent out to kill and die.

        Anonymous

The smart move would be to hunker down and dig into the territories you still hold. Prepare ambush points, tactics, battle plans, and let the enemy come and wear themselves out. But Ukrainians are led by a group of madmen who truly believe they're on the offense against Russia, or they don't care and they're just trying to keep the war hot by sending men out to get killed, and why not do so when yiu have volunteers you dont give a singke shit about? With all of the politics surrounding this war it seems to be more of a massive embezzlement scheme on part of the West than having anything to do with wanting to help the poor Ukrainians.

          Anonymous

they need to reclaim their territory if we want to continue receiving support from the west. If the war gets bogged down the west will lose interest and withdraw their support.

That’s what they did. Kiev was turned into a fortress, blew/mined all the bridges, handed random people rifles, every vodka bottle turned into molotovs. But then the Russians almost all at once ran out of fuel. It threw everything off, all plans out the window. If you were an ex Soviet commander and got hundreds of thousands of men high on nationalistic pride to attack the invaders which are clearly stumbling you wouldn’t say no.

They then go back and find about another recon team getting into a firefight with fellow Ukrainians because nobody bothered telling them where everybody is. I can’t tell if you’re joking or not.

It means linear danger area I.E. a road, trail, or any linear open area. He’s saying they didn’t properly set up security on both sides of the road to pass it

          Anonymous

Literally a fucking road, this one esp. so because its on a higher elevation than before or past it.

You post security looking both ways up the road before anyone crosses, pref with an MG facing the most likely avenue of enemy approach/fires.

The first 2 to cross post up on the other side at the most opportune cover and concealment covering down and up the LDA

3rd and 4th man push in ensuring the direction of unit movement past the LDA is clear and also laying the first stages of the appropriate formation.

The rest of the unit crosses. The initial security element picks up last and peels in across the road, then the first guys to actually cross - the second and now final security element, pick up and reform into the unit formation and they diddy mao the fuck out of there.

TLDR crossing roads is fucking dangerous

I'm not sure if it's down to the nature of the conflict being different, terrain, or what. but I genuinely don't believe we've seen as much usage of it here. granted hunter/killer set ups like what led to success in the valleys of Georgia makes less sense here, at least from what I've seen of the overall conflict, so maybe they are using it and just can't get out of that mindset. fighting the last war, as it were.

but seriously this kind of thread always makes me very mad not for the individual failures, tactics, or politics -- just that people like you and me can overlook these simple things so easily, and set out and try to change the world regardless. it just makes everyone look bad. not anyone on any particular side. humanity as a whole.

It's not the soldier's job to procure maps. It's the officer's responsibility. Which they clearly failed at this very basic task. Then again, this is the same Ukrainian commander who told multiple recon teams some random bullshit, causing a friendly firefight when they stumbled across Ukrainian positions. So yeah, the fault is with their Russia-tier commander.

That experience, far as I can tell, drove them to deeper integration with NATO and Western militaries generally, thus producing the remarkably improved fighting force we've gotten to see this year.

Are you all braindead? Of course they don't have appropriate maps, they're in a war zone, they make do with what they've got.
Planning and tactics go out the window when you have enemy 1000 meters away from you, and you're short on time. You need intelligence, all you have at the moment is wacky rumors, some of which may be true but may also be old or outdated. You will still need to go out and find for yourself where the enemy actually is. The mistake they made is not learning local language, which is again unrealistic because nobody knew they would have to volunteer in that country. And there's no time to learn the language in active warzone. They're doing the best they can given the circumstances.

Pocketed how? It's not like they are receiving wads of cash, they've received mostly left over 90's equipment from storage, which they give out to their units and some to these volunteers, as you saw one of them had a NLAW, had they encoutered a russian armored vehicle they would've been able to destroy it more than making up for their presence there and we would be laughting at the footage.
You have to consider the scale of this war, there are many such teams patrolling the grey zone areas around friendly positions to make sure no one is sneaking in, it's not possible to make sure everything is 100% perfect all the time like in a video-game.

A onewheel would be better for combat. Keeping both hands free is vital.

Fuck that was awkward. Turns out planning and administrative work is actually incredibly useful during the war. I take it the guy filming did a single tour in Army or Marines and really underestimated what having no support would mean working in an irregular military unit during a huge, open conflict like in Ukraine.

There's no irregulars in Ukraine, it's all military. It seems like the officers in this section of front are either untrained, or the training didn't stick.

The volunter unit is part of territorial defense and they're a irregular reserve of troops. The whole point is they're a paramilitary branch of the armed forces.

Is this civ dic again? He's the biggest larper around. Dropped out of the marines during basic due to an heatstroke and keeps posting videos where he says that "just as I turned off my gopro" massive firefight happened.

try using a gopro to film a day long event senpai. the batteries only last for about 45 mins of filming and the hero 7 doesn't have a very good indicator of whether or not its on or off.

The guy you're all shitting on was a US Marine, so it's all a bit of a self-own seeing as it's your military that produced the "larper". That said, the video says "terrible recon mission" and is a showcase of how terrible the ukie military was at the early stages of the conflict, so I don't understand why you're all shocked that the mission was as terrible as described. These guys are working with what they have, or at least with what the ukies have, which appears to be fuck all. At the end he says he's never seen anything like it, and bearing in mind he's also served with YPG and Yazidi forces in Syria etc, that's quite the statement in terms of the general chaos of it.
He remarks that the ukranians actually advanced a few tens of KM despite how fucked up they are. I think it's cool he shared the video despite it being a shitshow, it's a nice insight into how rag tag the ukie resistance was at the start of the war

Civ Div seems like the stereotypical bro-vet American war tourist who thinks they're high speed because they did one or two uneventful pumps to either Iraq or Afghanistan towards the tail end of the conflicts when the enemy was either depleted down to kids paid $5 to spray an AK in the general direction of the first US troops they see and run away or just totally dormant and not even really bothering with IEDs anymore.

Their intel was fucked but nobody on their team speaking the local language at a conversational level in an area with civilians in the mix, not having any kind of binoculars or other optics handy for observation on a recon mission and most of all relying on an iPad with fucking Google Maps for land nav is just inexcusably amateurish and lazy shit that nobody who's made it through even just shitty pogue-ass MCT would ever do willingly.

I don't blame the Ukrainian regulars for complaining about this guy and his ilk and trying to get them sent to the rear or on suicide missions. At best they're useless, at worst they're a liability.

The fact that none of these guys are using even a basic thermal monocular is very telling, or even fucking binocs, no decent maps, no decent comms, nobody fucking understands what anyone is saying, conversational level language, shit is awful, fucking POG ass civ div faggle.

It's extra funny because they're humping around on what's supposed to be a quick not even overnight in and out recon mission where the whole idea is to remain undetected with fully loaded main packs (and even a couple of them doubling up with their daypacks) when they had a totally secure PB at that hospital/office they could have left the nonessential stuff at and still complaining about being overloaded and having a hard time moving fast (gee I wonder why that TL sprained his ankle so badly..it truly is a mystery) and staying concealed (as evidenced by that drone seeing them at their LOD and lighting it the fuck up just 10 minutes later)

Bringing everything and the kitchen sink on a mission like they did is peak FNG or at the very least POG who has never done dismounted patrolling like this for any real length of time.

You quickly learn what you actually do need and what you can do without on these kinds of missions and become aggressively minimalist about it when your primary method of transport through your AO is the shoe leather express.

... didn’t he said they were originally supposed to stay the night in one of the villages and leave their gear there ?

            Anonymous

Then they should have taken just their daypacks then.

That's literally what they're for. It says so in the name.

If your whole team needs to hump a full size main pack like they had for just a 1-2 day operation, especially in a built up area like that where you're not digging in and using buildings as shelter, you're bringing way too much gear which is a total rookie move.

You can't blame them for the lack of equipment, apart from the lack of maps. The standards are probably the same across the entire army.

          Anonymous

For the price of that useless iPad with Google Maps they could have easily equipped the entire squad with a decent scope/pair of binos and/or a thermal monocular (decent man portable thermals aren't high speed military only gear anymore, they've been readily available on the civilian market since the 90s at least) plus a good military compass, grid square and decent maps of the AO which would have made that money go much much further.

Drones and satellites can't do recon in force or effectively probe the enemy's defenses like actual boots on the ground can.

      Personal lessons:
      >learned google maps doesn’t work in a war zone
      >learned can’t determine friend or foe 400m away
      >learned binoculars could be useful on a recon mission
      >commanders aren’t being up front to teams leading to friendly fire incidents
      Intel obtained:
      >towns aren’t abandoned
      >one possibility has Russians
      >trenches discovered
      >Russians fired at and missed your command post by blocks away so still not compromised

You guys are asking a lot out of guys retarded enought to fight a foreign war without speaking the language and who accepted to become worthless cannon fodder literally for free. Smart people make money and donate drones and thermals to Ukraine. Retards fly there, use uki equipment and don't bring scopes or optics to a recon/moving to contact mission.
