I've been experimenting with molle gear as a tool bag. I'm really liking it as my main bag because it can be added onto.
Drill, bits, stud finder, voltage tester, basic had tools. I'm finding a med-size sling bag far superior for basic handyman work.
I have a bigger bag for heavier stuff, flat bar, plumbing shit, that I don't use most of the time.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Range bag probably makes a good tool bag. It's like a smaller duffel bag with more pockets.

The thing with a MOLLE pack is you can set it up exactly how you like it, and it's going to be pretty durable, but for any application it's also going to be a lot more expensive and slightly worse than a purpose-built backpack. Even the basic Husky 16" backpack is fairly well thought out, the only thing I think it lacks is a rigid frame sheet on the back.

Granted, if you sew your own pouches you'll have a lot better time adapting MOLLE to tasks not directly related to shooting at people.

real-deal military surplus molle is probably expensive as balls, but Aliexpress sells some stuff that's reasonably priced, relatively good quality and compatible with molle accessories. I bought a very large backpack for 40~ish candinavian buckaroos shipped, and it's very nice. I was able to fit a PS3 slim, two controllers, a bunch of games, an old thinkpad, a pound of meat and a few veggies, plus a couple more things, can't remember. I was astonished at how much it could fit. Compared to the $200+ DeWalt Stanley Milwaukee Nascar backpacks, it's very competitive.

Those are very nice. A local military surplus store sells brand new cotton duck canvas bags in various sizes. The largest is long and can fit two mud boxes and a bunch of trowels and putty knives including a 10 inch with its handle, pic related. It's my drywall and masonry bag.

Fitting stuff is one thing, organizing it for rapid retrieval is another. I like tool packs to be lined with interior pouches, and nothing holds a set of wrenches quite like an interior panel designed for holding a set of wrenches.

Never tried it but I think tool backpacks have more efficient storage for small things on the inside, seems easier than having to put pouches on top of pouches

I do like the storage and pack out stuff from Stanley fatmax, the backpack is great too

Ever had to walk up 3 flights of stairs to someone's apartment with a tool bag? Essential and light is the point.

There’s so many brands that make tool specific backpacks that have already solved this problem. I wouldn’t want too much strapped to the outside. It would either be light and delicate and break easily, or heavy steel tools that risk damaging a freshly painted wall when you turn around in a hallway.

I've never worked with a crew that gave a shit about everyone else's tools. All anyone one cared about is everyone had their own basic set. And if anyone had the 1 thing that no one else did that was needed.
It's a work site, not grade school. I've never seen anyone goofed on because they owned Brand A and not Brand B.

No one is going to touch your tools, calm down.

This is very true and one reason I haven't worked for a GC in 15yrs. It's also pretty sad when those druggie degenerates are actually more skilled and knowledgeable than the GC himself.

I've seen a contractor wear an empty molle plate carrier with all his tools on him, it was a pretty sweet setup

cut flaps off mag panels, real nice size for most tools. all the molle is great for holding tools, pens, etc without even looking

position the mag panels lower, and add a couple on the back side, or hang off others.

buy a big lot of mag pouches and make tool belts, too. they are super cheap and Pentagon quality.

Plus, you will be dialed in for the Boogaloo.

I got this badboy. Dont underestimate the shoulder sling, it makes carrying any weight trivial. Lots of pouches
