If you really expect to reasonably encounter dangerous wildlife yeah
Absolutely overkill for regular ccw
If you hike/camp in bear country it gives you piece of mind without having to lug around a rifle. A 9mm will honestly kill a bear, especially a full size with fricking 18 rounds. If you can't kill a bear with 18 rounds of 9mm and a reload, you deserve to be removed from the gene pool. But 16 rounds of 10mm makes you certain that even if a grizzlyBlack person shows up you'll put him down. I use mine for HD too just because why not, it's powerful as hell. You can fricking feel it, it's like shooting a hand cannon.
Obligatory vid for bear murder discussion, in the case of bears the black ones are actually the nice ones. Don't freak out like a pussy and kill these curious big raccoons unless you're certain it's actually attacking. You can manage to take a swipe or kick it in the face if it gets too close, black bears aren't that big.
Let’s be real, 10mm was not developed to kill bears. It was developed so police could have the power of 357 or 41 magnum with the capacity and easy reloads of autoloaders. The higher power was desired because of large criminals who used body armor, drugs, and stimulants. The higher capacity was desired due to increasing fears of riots and criminal gangs that could overwhelm a single police officer with a revolver. 10mm would have been a success if not for Affirmative Action female FBI agents complaining that the recoil was too high. As a result, 10mm was relegated to an awkward status where “bear defense” became a euphemistic meme the gun community for using the cartridge.
I've shot 9mm and .40 side by side and didn't think there was much of a difference in recoil. I can handle my recoil, but shooting a steel frame bull barrel Witness in 10mm feels like shooting a fricking cannon. Recoil is definitely stout on the thing, I don't think it would make a good cop round because 9mm kills humans just fine, and .40 did it better yet was seriously overlooked. All in all, you've got 9mm doing well at killing humans, so keep the low recoil, quicker thus more accurate follow up shots, and extra 2 rounds per mag.
But when it comes to bears and large wild animals that aren't fricking around, they're basically gorilla Black folk high on PCP, and their bodies are physically bigger, more muscular, and adapted to pain, dont frick around. You want something that will for sure punch well through them and transfer a shit ton of energy into them to put them down. 10mm is a nice hard hitting caliber that works in semi auto pistols. I see no reason not to own one and have it be your outdoors gun. It's uses don't end there though, yes it can pull carry duty, home defense duty, duty duty, or whatever else a handgun is needed for. It just seems to be the go-to for guys who want a heavy hitter for those roles.
Shiiiiet but dat fowty doe wit da mufuggin stendo clip and dat mufuggin switch and dat mufuggin beam on it ooooh Dat shit done is do be poetic n shiiettt
Yeah and 22lr will also kill people, but in a life or death situation, I would rather drop an attacker with four or five rounds of 10mm than 10+ rounds of 9mm.

Real life doesn’t have Fallout 3 VATS. Usually defensive shootings happen in the heat of the moment where you might not get an ideal shot. Just look at the footage of the Houston taco shop shooting and see how many center mass shots of 9mm the robber took.

real life, people carry revolvers and .380s

No they don't. Nobody seriously carries those anymore when 99% of the handguns found at any local gun store are 9mm.
>overkill
You mean expensive and middling. Defensive 10mm is barley faster than .40, at best designed to get the same penetration as. 40, with the same size and weight bullet, but in practice sometimes the bullet that was made for .40 velocity under penetrate when going the slightly faster speed of 10mm.
For hardcast hot loads for animal defense is decent.

Part of how they socialize is to chase other bears/animals off from where they're grazing for food because they see those animals as competition for securing enough food. If they get hungry they might feel like fighting those other animals, or if they feel like their kids are in danger they could attack. Bear attacks are absolutely possible but very rare and can be mitigated by being a fricking man. As you see in that video the guy utilizes his primal side and basically tells the other animal to frick off. You're an animal too when out there in the wild.
>if they feel like their kids are in danger they ...
... WILL attack the ever-loving frick out of you. Big cats and bears are very, very fricking serious about that. Most animals are, even raccoons and housecats.
and Javalina's. Those fricks chase everything out of the park when they come rolling through with little piglets. First comes the running coyote's and you say to your self, WTF! >Then yo see the crew, and a big male strutting around looking for a fight..Frick those thing, they have fricked with me 8 times and I dont carry only carry a knife for just this scenario. Im going caveman on those b***hes next time
One of my favorite pistols of all time is my Rock Island Pro Match Ultra FS HC, 16+1 of 10mm.
Got it cerakote'd in gray which affected cycling for a little while until I re-broke it in. It's all steel so the recoil isn't nearly as bad as people think. Even stout loads from Buffalo Bore aren't too unwieldy in terms of follow-up shot capability.
People should only really be buying from BB if their intended use for whatever they're carrying requires hard-cast bullets. If your use case doesn't require them, don't buy from BB, it's not worth it. I've got a BFR in .460 S&W, and aside from the ammo for the Marlin I used to own, it's the only time I've ever bought from them. Great quality
.38 from BB is throwing money away, only buy heavy magnum or rifle cartridges
It's both. 10mm is a meme on a good way. It's the nuclear explosion in a gel test meme. A prank to tell a bear in the woods. Who wouldn't want more power? It's the most you can get in a Glock.
Disadvantage is that it's more expensive. More recoil. Less handgun selection. Could fit more 9mm bullets in the grip than 10mm bullets. Although it depends what you compare it to. 10mm is not a direct upgrade over anything.
>10mm is not a direct upgrade over anything.
Yes it is. A lot of people used to struggle to decide if they want a .40 over a 9mm but now that .40 is damn near dead (supposedly because 9mm can perform about the same as it) you might as well decide between 9mm and 10mm because 10mm is the direct upgrade. It's the same caliber as .40 so you can fit the same amount of rounds (generally 2 less for the same size grip as a comparatively sized 9mm). Of course the frames are a little bit bigger and the recoil is more stout, but those are additional trade offs to consider. As far as I'm concerned the popularity of 10mm kills off .40, .45, and .357sig as competitors. If you want something bigger and stronger than 9mm just get a 10mm, it's a whole extra 1mm!
Reminder.
In serious bear country, you should have some sort of long gun, carried easily accessible for bears, your sidearm is basically for contact headshots if the bear gets on you before your long gun can drop them.
much deeper penetration but still expands
FMJs are typically pretty soft lead so on something hard like bear hide you might get a lot of expansion but not much penetration
If you reload, get a .357 Magnum. No springs to worry about, no cases flying 20 feet into the bushwork, more versatile, etc.
I bought a Dan Wesson Razorback a year ago and it's a good gun, but sadly the 10mm is held back by limited case capacity and OAL.
>10mm is held back by limited case capacity and OAL.
That's why I'm looking at 460 Rowland for my meme-tier stoppan powah needs. With all the plebs hopping on the 10mm bandwagon, I need to stand out from the crowd and cause massive concussive blasts at the local indoor range when the normalgays bring their girlfriends there for date night.
I'd say it's helpful if you are in the backcountry and you need to carry without wanting to lug a rifle up into the sticks with you. It'll drop most things and if you are fricking wizard you can use it to hunt.
If you had several Grizzly bears b***h whistling at you as you are chopping wood.
Then yeah 10mm

you wot m8?
It’s more polite to say you want a 10mm for “bear defense” than “cracked-out gorilla Black person defense.”
>“cracked-out gorilla Black person defense.”
9mm is good enough for that
Shiiiiet but dat fowty doe wit da mufuggin stendo clip and dat mufuggin switch and dat mufuggin beam on it ooooh Dat shit done is do be poetic n shiiettt

Not what I'd call a meme. It's pretty fricking serious.
What do you want to use it for? It may or may not be optimal for that task.
Just want something powerful for when im outside
what yah carrying on the "Inside" brah?

defense ammo is loaded to 40 S&W because the bullets fall apart/over expand at 10mm velocity
A lot of it is loaded like .40 but cost +$100 more per case. You be the judge.

canadian Geese will become shiva destroyer of worlds when theyre near their nest
They're already the destroyer of worlds. Scholars belive all the malice absent in your average Canadian was funneled into their geese
>maximum intimidate skill ranks
>Grizzlies aren't that bad either
Grizzly paws typed this post.
It's a fun caliber
why is buffalo bore ammo so much more expensive than other defensive ammo? Their .38 is more than $2 per round.
its literally "bubbas pissin hot handloads" the retail brand
One of my favorite pistols of all time is my Rock Island Pro Match Ultra FS HC, 16+1 of 10mm.

Sorry, meant to say I also bought 10mm hard cast from BB for my hikes in the Shenandoah

Its a meme. Its still just a pistol cartridge
For outdoor defense it's fine.
For human defence it's moronic over 9mm/.40
Reminder.

What makes hardcast better than flatnose fmj?
much deeper penetration but still expands
FMJs are typically pretty soft lead so on something hard like bear hide you might get a lot of expansion but not much penetration
Hardcast is harder, so it deforms less, and gets deeper, straighter penetration.
Is a worthwhile meme
10mm will reliably penetrate light body armor if using Liberty Civil defense ammo. Unsure if Buffalo Bore will also pen but i wouldnt doubt it
>reliably penetrare body armor with a shitty meme that only gets 3" in gel after
>3"
Your mom is OK with that.
