yeah naw the boys loved Patton, he meant Berlin showed up faster, and that meant Home showed up faster.

It's all literally true. That's why guys fight for tough generals, if you have to be there miserable you might as well do something. Literally basal proposition of all militaries.

Even if Patton was a barbarian commander with no stirrups, men would come and fight for him and would seek out the opportunity to join him. It's something to do, the most noble something, testing a man's grit in battle. Patton delivers on the test and expects you to succeed. Men respond to that more than any other call including skyspirit bullshit.

Every chld knows that play is more noble than work, and War is the ultimate play, and Patton is an ultimate Warlord.

Pooland was being shitty and they deserved what they got.
German aggression against pooland was completely justified.

Non-sequitur. A lighter belt-fed LMG with interchangeable barrel is better for the role of squad automatic weapon than a BAR is and the US would have benefited if they had one more like the MG42/34. Theres a reason both the east and west quickly transitioned to belt-fed LMGs after the war, and why a derivative of the MG42 is still in service to this day in Europe and Ukraine while the BAR is not.

The M1 Garand was superior to the Mauser 98(k).
The BAR served its function as a proto LMG quite well and was more mobile than German MG38 or MG42 and units could field more of them.
The .30 Carbine was an excellent SDW.
          The M3 a decent SMG.
Really, U.S weapons were great and the U.S had the logistics and wartime economy to make as many as they needed. Logistics really being Burgerland's bonus ability.
Some of those weapons were probably in armories clear into the 1980's.
America's issues had more to do with doctrine and tactics than weaponry.

Springfield Armoury tried so hard to clone the MG-42, but failed, both because they could not intro metric-imperial conversions and their pathological need to fiddle with with dimensions. This sort of cloning of European guns always seems to be a kryptonite in the American arms industry.

          Overall they were pretty good.
Firstly the rifles, the soldier's best friend:
          >M1 garand, 8 shot semi-auto
          >M1 Johnson, 10 shot semi-auto
          >Springfield, 5 shot boltgun
America entered with mainly the first one. Second was used in a smaller capacity, and third was mostly for marksmen and snipers by then rather than standard infantry. America entered the war with semi-auto rifles, which it had since the 1930s. Germany didn't enter the war with those kinds of weapons, the infantry were stuck with the Kar98k as their battle rifle until they finally started fielding the Gewehr 43 halfway in and too late to be of real use anymore. The Sturmgewehr was admittedly very impressive, but it came far, far too late due to administrative bullshit.
          For the SMGs:
          >Thompson, 20 round .45, admitted piece of shit
          >M3, 30 round .45, breddy good
          >M1 Carbine, .30 cal, good shit despite what Korean war vets say
Overall I'd say America was ok here anyways, while the MP40 was good, America could still counter it. These are also close quarters weapons anyway, except the carbine which was pretty multi-use and was a better SMG-role weapon than the actual SMGs, which is why I put it here
          MGs:
          >BAR, 20 rounder
          >M1919, belt-fed
Heavy, yeah, but the backbone of the US squad was riflemen rather than relying on the MG. If the MG guys are taken out, who's left? Garands against glorified hunting muskets. Semi-auto beats bolt.
I'm not gonna claim that FDR wasn't a commie-aiding rat, but the equipment was not bad. If we'd had a Republican in office like Hoover, Landon, Willkie, or even Dewey (all Reps who ran against FDR if you don't know, although plenty of Dems also hated the gay), then I'm certain we would have immediately rearmed Germany under our banner after taking Berlin and taken the fight to Moscow to deal with them once and for all.

Well, impressive for the time. Today it wouldn't be, considering that it's successors (the G3 family) tend to be better since they ironed out all the kinks, aside from some variants and clones mangling brass during ejection. Hell, the MP5 is legendary and it's just the same action scaled down for 9mm.

The video is right, though, the MG42 had a pointlessly high rate of fire. There's basically no difference between suppressing fire at 1000 rpm and suppressing fire at 2000 rpm. Except for the second one you run out of bullets twice as fast. So either you waste more logistics space to carry ammo or you get less actual firing time.

            Anonymous

Not to mention the barrel wear. There were tons of problems the MG42 had in the field people don't like to talk about due to that overly huge rate of fire.

            Anonymous

In the first place, the video is a direct result of the superior suppressive effect of the MG-42, much good it did them. Nobody used the MG42 like you imagine though. You let off a short burst for suppressive fire.

Actually French tanks were superior to German at the start of the war. Same with Brits. The issue was that the French and Brits used 'pocket tank' tactics. Which is a single tank you surround with infantry to protect it from AT weapons, whilst the tank engages other tank. The Germans instead made entire units of tanks. So while a Matilda could possibly take out one or two Pz II's, the other 6 would flank and destroy it, the infantry squads being fucked by other infantry squads and tanks. Had the tactics of 45 on both sides been in 40, it would have been very different. Oh and any 'defensive lines' got shredded by CAS the Germans mastered.

              Anonymous

French tanks were only superior in that they had good armor. They often had one man turrets(an absolutely crippling feature), frequently lacked radios, and almost always had very poor speeds. The Char B1 also possessed a hull mounted gun of dubious practicality.
You will notice tanks designed afterwards(including French tanks) do not possess these features.

Give it a pistol grip, give it a decent bipod, don't bother with the rate of fire modifier or whatever you call it just keep the original fire selector, give it a quick detach barrel if you're feeling fancy. So basically what everyone else did with their BARs except the US.

It wasn't bad in WW2 either. It was bad in the paper infantry doctrine the US tried to use it with, where a 12 man squad would pack 2 of these BAR's to use as a bipod mounted LMG with 2 ammo bearers and the company would have a couple m1919's belt fed guns as support. The reality is that infantry squads would carry 2 or sometimes 3 BAR's with the heavy bipods striped off and used them more as automatic rifles than LMG's. They were very useful on the assault being 7-10lbs lighter than other light machine guns and balanced for shoulder fire. The belt fed M1919's supporting the company were also used in greater numbers alongside vehicle mounted M2 heavy machine guns.
The difference between paper doctrine and the more effective loadout the soldiers were actually carrying led the US army to officially adjust the equipment pool 1944, rather than trying to reorganize they gave each company a weapons pool with 6 more BAR's and 6 SMG's to be handed out at the company commanders discretion and 6 m1919's to be handed out at the battalion commanders, basically a you kids go have fun strategy to organization. In Korea this organizational change would be put onto paper changing from 3 squads of 12 men each with one BAR to 3 squads of 9 men with 2 BAR's and a support squad of 9 men backing 2 m1919 LMG's and 2 anti-tank weapons, a load out more akin to what the men actually carried into battle in the previous war.

Looka that. If you can make all that shit work in one spot, you nearly have an invincible mlitary, and when you run into guys like the Germans who actually CAN make that type of firepower work if they have it, your military makes a legend about how legendary those guys were because they can operate all the ordnance/weaponry/doctrine/maneuver bullshit that gets dumped on a capable force.

If you're a Navy and you can get liquid fuel and supplies from one ship to another *regularly*, you're practically invincible. Except for picrel, the Japanese can't get all their shit together in one spot. That's why the US has to win Leyte. The order of battle of Leyte Gulf is literally getting all your shit operating in one spot, the Japs can't, they lose. Simple as.

Everything was. Metallurgy sucked major ass back then.
Basically every WW2 lmg sucked and was too heavy, with the bren being probsbly the least worst.
That's what made the MG-34/42 and the GPMG revolution they brought such a big deal.

The monitor, while reall really cool, wasn't ideal for filling the m1918 and 1920's shoes.
A lot of the weight you can reduce in an MG or rifle is in the barrel.
A light barrel wouldn't be an issue for the monitor in it's intended role as an early pseudo battle rifle born of the paleolithic era of SWAT but it would be an issue for sustained fire. Though that's not to say the BAR wasn't frequently used in a similar role by the military.
Things like the BAR and M1/2 carbine sre part of what makes the pioneer era of maneuver firepower, the birth of the modern lmg, assault rifle, and GPMG so interesting.
It really was the wild west and no one knew what they were doing but they shared similar goals

most non german LMGs were a little mediocre at the time and in the American's case it really wasn't helped by them using .30-06 since a BAR is already a pain to shoot as heavy as it is even

Unwieldy, heavy, outdated. But we had a lot of them already, and they managed to kill a lot of Germans. Sure, they could have, in some alternate time line, used a different weapon to fill its roll. But, they did what they had to. So, eh, who cares.

Yes, but the 240 is belt fed with 200 round cans instead of 20 round box mags.
The extra weight is worth the added capacity.
All weapons are a list of compromises and the 240 adds a little weight for better suppression

I can't judge it since I have never held it. I don't think you can ever judge a gun unless you have finger-fucked it at least. I never thought the M1 carbine was anything to be excited about until I held one. It's so light and easy to handle. I think it's a great gun and now I want one. I can't take your word for it. I'd have to hold one to know.

Considering that it was designed for use in WW1, it was a great addition at the time.
If it had been belt-fed it might still be officially in use in places.

I think considering how the world thought in the time it was made, it was entirely justified.
People back then nearly all thought all semi-auto firearms were inherently "unstable" and were prone to blow up in your hands or fail if a speck of dust looked at it funny. Not because this was a thought based in reality, it's that a lot of people were just fucking retards, the sort that would tell men to walk slowly towards an MG nest because they'll be trying to compensate by shooting ahead of your or some such bullshit.
Most militaries got over this regarding small caliber shit, such as handguns or pistol caliber carbines, but the idea of a semi-auto rifle was still seen as utterly absurd in that time period. What few handheld automatic or semi-automatic firearms that existed were typically overbuilt as all hell to sell the idea that it won't turn you into a red splatter on the ground. Just take a look at what else was floating around out there with the BAR:
      Lewis Gun
      >weight: 28 pounds
      >capacity: 47 rounds, mag fed
      Chauchat
      >weight: 20 pounds
      >capacity: 20 rounds, mag fed (handy strip cut out in the middle to insert mud and jam your gun on demand)
      Hotchkiss M1909
      >weight: 26.5 pounds
      >capacity: 30 round feed strip (glorified stripper clip) or belt fed (of course you don't get a pouch for that)
Huot Automatic Rifle as a bonus
      >weight: 19 pounds loaded
      >capacity: 25 rounds, mag fed
      >number built: 5
The only actual LMG from the period that I think manages to edge out the BAR is the Madsen MG, and only barely on the metric of weight-to-capacity
      >weight: 20 pounds
      >capacity: 25, 30, or 40 round magazines
Either way, the BAR manages to be the one of lightest of the LMGs from the Great War, and I'd rather carry it over its contemporaries if I have to pick one of them.
Browning made his shit compact as he could. If he couldn't get it below 15 pounds, then you know that nobody else alive in that time could have either.

Interviewed a Korea War vet for a veterans day article I had to write back when I was a newspaper reporter in bum fuck. He was a BAR man and I asked him his thoughts on the platform, mentioning that I had read about it being somewhat unpopular/dated by Korean War due to its weight and limited magazine capacity. His response was "Well, the Chinks sure didn't like it."

    I've handled a few BARs, a Bren, an MG42, and a Lewis.
Lewis was horrendous, the barrel shroud puts all the weight at the muzzle.
Then Bren was pretty heavy too.
The MG42 was quite unwieldy and long.
The BAR was very manageable, perfectly balanced.
    I dont even lift anymore.
