I bought my first Mini 14 and will pick it up in a few days (WA waiting period), it's the Ranch model in the pick and although it's obviously not deadly due to lacking a flash hider, I am excited to be joining the A-team.

For any anons who own/have owned one, with it's 1 in 9 twist barrel, have you found any loads particularly well or poorly? I like to buy cheap and stack deep, so I favor M193, but if that's a bad call in your experience, I'd like to hear what's worked for you.

I am only shooting with iron sights for now (Tech Sights), and other than that the only other alteration will be a Hogue overmolded stock to replace the factory stock.

Thanks anons

      Mini 14 - Advice?

I've seen several places selling them, they all said they got the go ahead to sell them, but just for the Ranch models. Not gonna question it while they can still be bought.

You aren't the only one anon. I just bought a used mini 14 for $700 since "Assault Weapons" are banned in Illinois. It is supposedly made in 1983 and the wooden stock is black I believe. The site claims it is chambered for 223 Remington but I have to check for myself once it gets to my FFL

I'm not American, I'm a leaf. It's not a stretch to think that the homos that banned the SKS in WA might notice the Mini-14 and add it to the list.

I prefer something with more grip, hence the Hogue stock, but I of course can't deny the appeal of the classic wood stock. I tried one of those, but just too slick for my sweaty-ass palms, oh well.

I didn’t, paid $999 + tax for mine. I figured it was best to get one while I still could, rather than sweat the price, being that as long as I’m in WA it’s the only option left (for now).

Not really my cup of tea but congrats. Buy good mags and keep it lubed but not too wet. Minis are over gassed as frick in my experience. Also not accurate enough for anything more than a dot or low power prism. I hope you enjoy it though, they are still fun to frick just a bit dated in 2024

anyone here that has a Mini-14; are the .300 BLK and 5.56 mags interchangeable? Ruger says they are not, but some anecdotal evidence indicates they might be.
I got a Mini-14 in .300 recently and am trying to find 30 round .300 mags for it, but the only 30 rounders I can find online are for 5.56/.223.

ballistics performance is virtually identical between .223 and .300 blackout at close ranges
why are you being so autistic about this

                Anonymous

Are you moronic? .300 blackout and 5.56 have way different approaches to causing damage. There's no good reason to use .300 blackout over 5.56 unless you're using a really short barrel and a suppressor. Why would you ever choose .300 blackout over 5.56 in a mini-14 of all things?

                Anonymous

it's difficult to find direct barrel length comparisons but this should be good enough to get the point across. Both are from Fiocci brand, per the ammunitiontogo website. If you can find a better source, by all means please share it.
.300 Blackout from 16 inch barrel:
                >150 gr bullet delivers 1266 ft-lb muzzle energy at 1950 FPS
.223 Rem from 24 inch barrel:
                >55 gr bullet delivering 1282 ft-lb muzzle energy at 3240 FPS
Yes, one is a slower and heavier bullet, the other is a faster and lighter one, but the energy delivery at close ranges is virtually identical, even putting aside the differences in barrel length here. so what is it exactly then, in your estimation, that makes the .300 blackout inferior for such purposes?

I have a Hannibal rail and was looking into one of those.

Do I need to use the top handguard to lock the stock into place? That would be a dealbreaker for me tbh.

                Anonymous

other way around it seems; you need the stock to lock the top handguard into place as it screws directly into the stock, and I don't think drop-in top handguard pieces will work with it as I tried putting the Ruger factory one back on and could not get it to hold firmly on the ATI body.
if you really wanted to, I bet you could drill+thread the appropriate screw hole into your hannibal rail.

Wait, WA state still allows semi-auto rifle purchases? Does this mean I can get an AR upper?

you have to have a permit now, whatever that means
also 10 round limit on mags

I have seen Aero Precision upper receiver parts in stores, I don’t know about complete uppers but I think at the least, you could probably build an upper. I haven’t seen lowers, as you would expect. The only semi-auto center fire rifles I’ve seen for sale are the Mini 14 Ranch, and if you count it, the Ruger PC Carbine without a threaded muzzle.

      OP

If buying an AR was still an option, yeah I would agree with you. But until I get out to a free state (which I’m working on), the rifle I have is better than the AR I don’t. The way things are likely going this year, I’ll take what I’m able to get now and not let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

you have to have a permit now, whatever that means
also 10 round limit on mags

The safety class was really nothing. Did it online. I oppose the whole concept of taking a class to exercise your rights on principle, but as a practical matter it was not a big deal.

Depends on the exact configuration, no threaded barrel, pistol grip, is fine. The gay shit in the law is “barrel shroud” which can apply to most if not all semiautomatic rifles, but the mini 14 has its integrated into the stock. Any way, if you get prosecuted for it there are several legal groups waiting to defend you. Or just go Lexington/concord mode.

When I get to a free state, I’ll load up on the 20-rounders, I prefer the way they balance, with the traditional stock/grip

Wylde built tactical has factory 20 round mags blocked off to 10. Super easy to convert back to normal, should you ever move somewhere with less restrictive laws or get a freedom week scenario

          Anonymous

I've heard that some companies might be shipping limited mags whose epoxy and rivets might be easily removable so one could, if one intended, convert them to full original capacity. Mind you this might be illegal in some jurisdictions, and I would never advocate that anyone do such a thing, I'm just passing on what I heard. About certain companies. Online.

Was this an older model, or one of the post-2007 models? The newer ones are supposed to have had a bunch of changes like a new barrel profile that improve the accuracy over the older models.
