Is there any way it could be recreated. I’m not a machining person but I would put multiple 10’s of grands into getting one of these made. I’m simply not smart enough to learn how to do everything he did. But I would do what I can to build it.

        Anonymous

        >I’m simply not smart enough to learn
It's more about time investment than smarts.
Say, you're trying to cast a part that is angled on the sides, like a truncated pyramid. If you make the mold with the pyramid "base down" and pour metal into the mold, your piece is stuck inside the mold (unless you're doing sand casting and can just destroy and remake the mold on every cast). Now, if you're a smart person, you'll figure out that you need to have the "base up" for the piece to pop out before you make the mold.
If you're not smart, but you are willing to learn, you'll watch a tutorial on casting that will bring up draft angles and how to orient and design pieces so they'll pop out of molds easily.
So dedicating time to research makes up for lack of smarts. If you just insist on not learning you're gonna do every mistake in the book, and even a smart person will fall for rookie mistakes.

          >So dedicating time to research makes up for lack of smarts
Dedicating time to research is usually what smart people do, because it saves a shit ton of trial and error and all the brainstrain that comes with working towards a solution that someone else already made.

I’m the (you) you relied too who’s a tard.

I have zero fricking idea what you’re saying in this post, but I do want to learn. And if I managed to make this shit I would totally accidentally release the source files.

I started watching the channels the guy talked about who made the BR, but if you or anyone has more to offer I will happily take it. If he won’t make the files public I can atleast try making new ones. I’ll probably fail but hey better than nothing.

I have access to a lathe, any hand tool I’d need, any software I can get, and lots and lots of time. If I need anything I’m happy to put money towards it to make it happen.

        >I’m simply not smart enough
you're certainly young because this mindset is little more than an excuse that should be beasted out of you. you just don't want to do it enough is the real reason and you being too lazy to meticulously plan and research is why you won't do it, "i'm not smart enough" is little more than a cop-out because people who aren't actually smart enough never make that excuse

I like that its an aluminum frame. He could have tried a polymer system but I think the aluminum look is quite handsome and gives it a solid looking build.
The attention to detail with respect to the control surfaces are especially nice. I think one of my issues that amateur gunsmiths often have is making something that doesn't really look comfortable to hold.
Ultimately, if you acted like Halo never existed, this would still appear to be a cool gun.

This is a pretty cool way of doing the round counter. It also means you don't have to do anything like reset the counter or whatever like some systems do, because it knows exactly where the follower is at all times as well as whether a magazine is inserted at all.

That's just how it is. The gays at shotshow are in the business to make money. They aren't passionate about it and couldn't give less of a shit if the product worked as long as they got paid. Random autists with time and intelligence who are passionate will spend those sleepless nights and weekends making their dreams real.
The best businesses are founded on a savvy businessman (Jobs) finding an autist (Wozniak) whose skill they can wrangle into a profitable product.

7.62 would beat the gun to death without some sort of very advanced and small buffer system. The butt of the rifle just doesn't have the space needed for 7.62 to work out. You'd have to extend it by several inches to get 7.62 to work properly.

Does the BR55 have any benefits over a real world gun? In practice it's just a thin FS2000. I'd like to see him design a gun "inspired" by the BR55, give it a unique name so he can patent it, and chamber it in 556 and 7.62.

I think if you "fix" it so that it can fire 7.62, you'll effectively remake the FS2000. For purely aestetic reasons, I dislike the look of the BOAT GUN.

            >9.5x40

You mean the Halo fantasy round? My interest is in taking fantasy ideas and then adapting them to the real world. 556 and 762 are NATO standards, and that's what we have. So if you take something inspired by the BR55 and adapt it to NATO rounds, you'll probably end up with something that looks like a sleaker less ugly FS2000 and that's fine by me.

This is vidya land. The power of the bullet matters not by its own properties but by the numbers entered in code for the weapon. Pic firing 7.62 is far superior to another automatic rifle firing the same ammo.

how about this: a reverse-mounted buffer tube, with a rocker arm. Recoil along the barrel axis (red) is converted into motion of the rocker arm. The lower end of the arm is connected to the reverse buffer tube. Buffer can now be extra long without affecting OAL or LOP.

The sad part is this is likely as close as we're going to get for IRL versions of fictional or cancelled guns. Most aren't like Star Wars dressing up WWII guns or M41 Pulse Rifles made from a Thompson and other stuff. Internal workings and more aren't relevant at all. Getting a shell and placing an existing system inside is a way to guarantee it'd work.

It sounds so shit but it was so fricking good. At least 80-90% of people had mics for better or worse. From what I hear, you don't get that in a lot of PC game lobbies these days. Oh and no one gave a frick, pretty much everything went. No AI listening to voice chat to ban you or anything like that. It was rare for anyone to get a ban for voice chat, and when it was, it was MAYBE a week temp ban lol. Unless you put something in your motto or catchphrase in xbox Live and got reported for it, then you got a nice "GUIDELINES" as a replacement for your motto/bio or whatever it'd say after a couple times.

Nah I was too nice in chat to get a ban either. I think I knew someone who may have gotten a temp ban but that's it. Though they also had bio and motto bans lol. I just remember playing hours and hours and hours of xbox live almost every day so I got to witness all the bantz and shit talking between other people a lot. I was mostly quiet for a while. Every now and then I'd get caught laughing at two guys arguing because of noise activated mic instead of push to talk lol. I actually met some people on xbox around my age later and then from there on I'd be in party chat with them most of the day. Most of them I haven't heard from in years as I assume most of them also went away from xbox, but I found my password to one of my accounts recently because I had to migrate my Minecraft account (a real old one from beta) and noticed that my friend I met was still online. I'm lucky enough to be in contact with them, at the very least. The rest of them I have no clue. Wish they'd have given me some other way to contact them. I'm lucky the person I talked to the most still has the newest xbox or they'd all be gone with no contact.

And that was just active friends. I'm not even counting random dudes. And in public lobbies, everyone either just got along or talked shit and went on with their day. In a way it was almost like PrepHole but voice chat. You have people of all ages talking shit, trolling, doing their thing, etc. No one, or very few, would get offended and report anyone, lol. People didn't get kicked very often at all - if you even could in whatever game you were playing.

NTA but but there were complaints the WHOLE time. From weapon balance, map design, plot holes, retcons, you name it. It didn't help that Bungie wanted a standalone RPS, then a standalone FPS, just for game 1 alone. And as the franchise went on, Bungie just halfassed more and more as they were sick of the franchise until they crashed and burned it after 3, leaving the schmucks who thought it was salvageable to fail to zombify its corpse.

I'd say 3 because Ensemble Studios made Wars.

2 was a very troubled production to say the least. There wasn't meant to be a 3 initially but so much was leftover for 2. Of course, them becoming Call of Duty was because that was the new and popular thing. They saw what was popular, much like extraction shooters now I can't blame them for wanting success but I can blame them for abandoning their old styles.

                >They saw what was popular
And instead of maintaining their style which brought them success in the first place they changed it to a bastardized version of something else to try to capture both audiences and it ends up alienating both. Classic case of what not to do at a stoplight. At least the guns are cool still.

It happens. The FPS genre even then had loads of people criticizing it as repetitive. Call of Duty games were coming out year after year. If they stuck to their own more, they'd have more to stand out.

Keep it up. Let me help you: the next time you hit the bong and saddle up to your keyboard, try to remember that you're in a firearms forum, chock full of enlisted, veterans, law enforcement, PMC, and other people very handy with these tools, beyond collecting and larping. Some of them are very, very unhappy people with mysterious mental ailments, yet their psychical abilities remain. Some of them can become vindictive and unpredictable - even without direct insult. A decent size subset of those are quite tech savvy to boot, and think nothing of using their surveillance tools for personal reasons, because a tool is a tool to them. This place is a little different than Craigslist or IG, or your text threads with close friends who can gauge your humor in a rational way. Im telling you this because its easy to slip into a world of shit, even over a couple careless words, and I wouldn't want that for anyone.

    >zero gunsmithing experience
Well yeah, gunsmiths are unironically ridiculously incompetent machinists almost across the board. If you meet someone who has a degree in "gunsmithing" or anything adjacent, instead of machine or mechanical engineering, they're moronic.

      Anonymous

Gunsmithing is a lesser variety of machinist, and neither is a variety of engineering. Guns are simple enough many machinists have designed them because there isn't much to them and they're dirt cheap to prototype then change if you fricked up.

John Browning designed and made most of his classics before manual knee mills existed yet precision was not a problem. Check out early 1900s machine tools. You can even buy them for small money like old horizontal mills and large lathes (which sell for less than little lathes because homosexuals don't know how to move things).

        Anonymous

        >is a lesser variety of machinist
Yes, if you don't care about the design process (engineering) behind the whole thing and subscribe to the idea that a gunsmith is just a machinist (though it seems in the current year, gunsmiths aren't even that).

Gunsmiths are basically in three groups: wood carvers for Fudd guns, guys taking a dastardly file to some cast 1911 frame in a jig, or guys playing ARlegos.

No, see the experts here are saying it's all just a shell for an AR and nothing special, so what would he even patent?

      >zero marketable skills
Yeah and learn2code is being replaced with AI now. Soon your doctor and lawyer will be an AI. Retail and service jobs are going to be automated. Everything except glowies and the tax man is going to get automated within the next 30 years. Muh marketable skills aren't going to be a thing for long, so don't worry about it.

lots of custom machining and casting will do that. bro probably prototyped like crazy

He mentioned in one of his comments burn out resin for casting. A bottle of decent resin cost $80-$100 and isn't going to give you a ton of prints since it's typically used for smaller items.

Even if he didn't have a single failed print or casting, I could see him using thousands of dollars in resin alone. If he had to iterate and do multiple castings of the same part even more. $60k seems cheap all things considered.

Tooling, dies, etc absolutely will run you huge sums of money. Shit is expensive. Some autist in florida who redesigned a spray bottle with a heavier bottom so it wouldn't tip over had to pony up like 30k for the prototypes.

      Anonymous

As a DIY type autist who tries to save money, I believe it, though maybe with slight exaggeration or poorly explained cost breakdown. Depends if he includes his lathe/mill/CNC in that time or if he had to rent time from someone with those tools too as well as if he includes the """cost""" of his own time. I've recently spent about $50+ attempting to figure out how to copy (out of production) or DIY taxidermy forms since for some ungodly reason a form costs anywhere from $115-150 plus shipping with some animals having less than 5 poses which also means the size of your pelt/animal leaves you with one option. Now that I know I can get 2 part foam from Home Depot or Lowes for under $20, I can make them quickly and cheap. Each pack of foam lets me pour easily 2, maybe 3 raccoon sized forms assuming it's solid and I don't stuff the center with junk to stretch it further. To get to that point, I've probably spent nearer to the $100-150 area to learn that, not to mention time, (theoretical) pelt cost, and tool cost, AS WELL as learning everything there is to basic taxidermy and those tools (so up that to probably $300-500). I have other projects where I've surely spent far more. Whereas I'm a moron over here covered in paper, glue, and spray foam which are relatively cheap, he's deep in tooling, machines, software, metal costs, gun part costs (especially if he breaks parts or buys something that ends up leading to a dead end), etc. If he also started from scratch, say with little to no machines or tools, I could see where the costs are coming from. Decent PC for modeling, software, printers, mills or CNCs, casting setup, you name it.

it's a receiver set. neat, but how the frick did it cost him $60,000?
i seriously doubt the L85 kit cost that much to prototype.

      Anonymous

What you posted is an off the shelf BRN 180 upper on a custom lower with 3D printed parts on top.

What he did was machine a custom upper and lower, machine small parts, cast metal parts. He's probably including the equipment to machine and cast parts into the 60k figure.

The L85 kit probably did cost similar to prototype considering what machining a lower costs, including the machine. If you already had the machine then it's a lower cost as it's just "machine time" but it's still a very high barrier cost to entry. I didn't ask the L85/BRN180 guys what sort of machine shop they had when they posted here.

Also considering he's a prototype engineer or something running his own business, you could take the amount of hours he worked and multiply it against his hourly wage he charges for his work, for 4 years of work it would be like 200,000+ in labor, theoretically if he could have been earning money doing his normal job during that time. Engineering time isn't cheap.

        Anonymous Mogul

the majority of the receiver could have been made out of an extrusion and put through 1 machining pass for aesthetic details.
the lower could be made from billet and you could have bent that carry handle out of sheet metal.
the fact that he used so many manufacturing steps with such a numerous part count just goes to show how inefficiently it was designed.

not to mention he picked a version of the BR that's covered in greebles. the halo 3 version is way simpler and honestly better looking too.

he said himself that he's not an engineer and he doesn't design firearms in his normal job.
