going to gun store for first time, i have interest in buying an m1 garand. anything i should know so i don't look like a complete jackass?
going to gun store for first time, i have interest in buying an m1 garand. anything i should know so i don't look like a complete jackass?
Do they have one in stock?
not sure. it's close by so i figure i'd go in regardless just to look around and ask questions.
Few gun stores will carry m1s unless they specialize in C&R guns or are a bigger shop like Cabela’s gun counter.
surely they can point me in right direction or order one for me?
>surely they can point me in right direction
Worse than /k/ will.
>or order one for me?
No. 100% no.
Best bet is to get something available, normal, and shoot. Then look into the CMP and try to snag an M1 Garand down the road.
Probably not. They can’t order one for you either.

I dunno man, it's worth a look. The best local store around for me has a really big used long gun section and you can always find something interesting there.
Your first gun really shouldn’t be a M1 Garand unless you have a lot of money to waste on .30-06
i wouldn't be shooting it too often, mostly looking forward to mounting it on my wall and looking at it lol. how expensive is the ammo?
Your already the perfect gun owner
I got a .308 garand and love it, reloading 308 uses less powder and seems to be more available and cheaper everywhere
M1 Garand will not be found at your LGS and if it is it'll be a piece of shit because an actual decent M1 Garand would be sold in seconds
what would make it a piece of shit?
an old style gun, low technology, probably easy to maintain, very very beautiful and sounds amazing. I have no interest in pistols
>what would make it a piece of shit?
pitted, damaged furtiniture, barrel is shot
>low technology, probably easy to maintain
Anon, it's a semi-auto rifle that you can't use conventional off-the-shelf .30-06 loads in without research ahead of time, and it uses magazines that are no longer produced and have to be eyeballed to make sure that they're not bent out of shape. It's neither low tech nor is it easy to maintain. Its takedown process will also require some understanding.
Please get a more conventional firearm for your first one and leave things that require research for your second.
Unironically an M1A might work better for you.
damn man, i wanted an ar15 then came to the realization that it won't be an option for someone living in california, m1 garand was my second pick...
you can easily get an ar15 for under 1000 in ca. it will have some stupid bullshit on it that you overpaid for that can easily be removed and replaced in under 10 minutes but you wouldnt do that cause thats illegal and you still want to go shoot that gun at ranges.
>but you wouldnt do that cause thats illegal and you still want to go shoot that gun at ranges
correct, i always wanted an ar15 a1 but being in California it'd be cucked and ugly looking with no pistol grip
you can have it look right and be a royal pain in the ass to reload. or have it look moronic and have a detachable mag.
your choice.
or you could just get a 22lr version like a m&p 15-22
>and you still want to go shoot that gun at ranges.
Damn what ranges do you go to. Even angeles as cucked as they are don't give a shit unless you're using bi metal jacketed ammo and shooting faster than 1 shot every 1 (more like half) second.
How about a Ruger Mini-14? It doesn't have a pistol grip and you can get one with an internal magazine. Also the wooden ones will look less scary to caligays.
>an old style gun, low technology, probably easy to maintain, very very beautiful and sounds amazing
Yeah, no guns confirmed
The Garand is expensive. It's shoots expensive ammo. It's clips are expensive. It's over ten fricking pounds loaded, so it's expensive to carry.
All this means you're going to spend way less time shooting, you're going to shoot far fewer rounds than you otherwise would and you're never going to fricking improve because you don't practice enough.
Get a 5.56 or a .22, not a gun that shoots bullets that are on average three fricking dollars lmao
Any red flags I should look for in when buy M1 Garand?
please explain why you tihnk the M1 garand would make a good 1st gun for you.
>Walk in
>"Do you uhhhh lemme get the uhhhhhh m1 grand"
>"We don't have that here sir but we do have these M1As which are like a garand or you could buy this auto ordnance M1 carbine which is from the same era"
>"that'll be $2000.73 plus tip also please tip the guy who ran your BG check and also the fat guy who stands by the door with his hand over his serpa holster"
That's what 90% of gun shops will be like if you don't call ahead to check for stock
goddamn man, i figured i'd be paying big money for this gun. more or less how much should i expect to pay?
>Best bet is to get something available, normal, and shoot. Then look into the CMP and try to snag an M1 Garand down the road.
why not just go straight cmp?
You’re looking to buy a M1 Garand and don’t even know how much they cost?
i have only looked on few websites, it seems the nice ones are all auctions
I'm bullshitting about the 2k for an M1A or M1 carbine they're more like 1100 to 1600 although there are sometimes you can find a carbine closer to 900. As for the garand last time I was checking places (like 4 years ago) 1600 was for a mixmaster "shooter" grade. CMP sells decent quality guns for cheaper but there's some hoops you need to jump through that will take longer than a few weeks usually.
Best bet is probably gunbroker. Your lgs won't have shit.
0% chance he can follow basic instructions for gunbroker
What’s your budget?
Bear in mind that there are a lot of ancillary things that you’ll need as a first time gun buyer (thankfully most are usually one-time only purchases).
Just remember to have enough in your budget for these things besides the gun and ammunition:
>Ear pro
>Eye pro
>Cleaning kit
>Small maintenance kit
>Range bag (for carrying spare ammunition, ear protection, eye protection, cleaning kit, maintenance kit)
>Gun case (hard or soft, just something to take to the range)
>Sing
>spotting scope (nothing worse than having to wait 10-15 min for the RO to call a cold range to check your shots when zeroing sights and scopes)
>bean bags (for bench shooting)
>gloves (i used to shoot bare handed all the time until my wedding ring scratched the shit outta my Sako 75’s stock…)
I’m sure there’s more, just keep these in mind. Iv’e known too many first time gun buys get their gun and ammo, and then think “frick, i can’t actually use my gun or go to the range until I get this other stuff” so they’re stuck looking at a gun they can’t shoot for a pay period until they can afford the rest.
my budget it about 1000 dollars for the gun, guessing i wont get shit with that?
you're probably right, what does it entail?
>my budget it about 1000 dollars for the gun, guessing i wont get shit with that?
Uhh bro, did you not even look up how much a Garand fricking costs before making this moronic thread?
Spoiler Alert: They usually a lot fricking more than one thousand dollars lmao
https://www.gunbroker.com/M1-Garand/search?Keywords=M1%20Garand&s=f
Go search the completeds on GB. There are quite a few that sold in the $950-$1300 range. It'll take time though to find and actually get one for that though. It won't be immaculate but it'll be usable.
>>sing
Downright musical anon..
Obviously meant sling
Just go on GunBroker and have it mailed somewhere with an FFL.
you will already look like an idiot buying an m1 garand as your first weapon, so just accept that.
OP. Just buy a shotgun, they’re a lot of fun, especially for a new shooter, not that expensive, and you don’t have to deal with California’s bullshit. Depends on the one you buy but it could look really cool on your wall.
>not that expensive,
shotguns are expensive as frick. not the gun itself but ammo thats not birdshot is rather pricey.
Yeah bird shot is some of the most fun. Skeet, trap, sporting clays, and all sorts of bird hunting. Just a ton of fun.
Wrong. And especially wrong compared to 30-06 moron. Can get 00 buck for .56 a round.
A shotgun is going to be more affordable to shoot than fricking .30-06 my homie, I couldn't find more than one or two boxes of .30-06 that were less than 1 dollar a round, meanwhile you can find hundreds of boxes of shells for 50 cents a pop
this is the only shotgun i have interest in and it's illegal as frick
There’s nothing illegal about the SPAS-12 unless CA made some new laws when I wasn’t looking.
For one, no it isn't its just very expensive due to scarcity. Two, I'd suggest you get a cheap pump action 12 gauge and try it out. Its more fun than you'd expect. Would let you shoot, learn, have some fun, pop your gun cherry in an affordable way. The Maverick 88 or Mossberg 500/590 series are the go too nowadays. Older 870s are better imho but 2004 production onwards suck.
>Two, I'd suggest you get a cheap pump action 12 gauge and try it out. Its more fun than you'd expect.
its LESS fun than you would expect, shooting shotguns is fun for the first tube, then you wont want to shoot shotguns anymore, and if you have solid fundamentals from shooting other firarms, you dont need to train with a shotgun beyond handling and loading.
OP, get a cheap ar.
Maybe if you're a massive homosexual who only shoots at paper targets on a flat range and dreams of being a partisan operator. He lives in California for one, so his mileage for ARs is lower than normal. Two shotguns are cheap to buy, cheap to feed, satisfying to shoot, powerful, very free from most legal restrictions even in cucked states, and very effective in defensive situations.
>shooting shotguns is fun for the first tube, then you wont want to shoot shotguns anymore
I have more fun shooting my 590 than any of my other guns
>For one, no it isn't
Yeah you wont find an M1 garand at most gun stores. Reliably can get them from the CMP
Your best bet for a nice m1 would be the rock island auction I go to a few every year and I’ve seen thousands of mint condition m1s sold. Don’t listen to the anons that say they are hard to find, literally a dime a dozen
"Every few years" being the operative phrase. Market is much different compared ti a few years ago
I said “I go to a few every year” they have multiple auctions every year dingleberry
Look into the CMP and ordering a garand from them. Anyone else selling one is going to be scalping prices. They're not exactly common at this point. Then go get yourself a PSA AR and a 10/22
>people still paying GB/boomer gun show prices for m1s
How do none of you gays know about the CMP
all you have to have is a CCW or hunting permit + sign up for the garand collector's association, you can use your email notification as proof of membership
Does having a special fan club where Garand owners suck each other's dicks make it less of a horrible choice for a first gun?
Just be honest with yourself, you know that the dude's never gonna shoot the fricking thing if he buys one.
Do you own a firearm?
Objection!
Argumentum Ad Hominem
This user is clearly assblasted.
Case dismissed.
i do, and i like garands but its a stupid first gun. like if a guy was looking for a luger as a first gun, its dumb. you dont train with them, they are very useful in a modern application. they are range toys or collector pieces, and therefore are not good first guns.
Unless that persons reason for owning the gun is because they are a collector…
I agree with the other anon, buying a collectible is dumb for a first gun. Op should get a rifle just to learn about how they function and what they should look like. Will help make him an informed buyer.
it's $25 to receive a newsletter once a year gayass
don't come sobbing to me when you pay $1999 for one when I paid $800 total.
For Garands you'll need an aftermarket Schuster gas plug. (About 50$) Modern .30-06 is hot enough to bend op rods and frick up recievers.
The Schuster plug basically vents out enough gas to match old M2 ball.
I hate InRangeTV but wifeshare Karl and Chairman Ian do a great job explaining the plug and its use
buy one from simpson ltd instead of just walking into a gunstore and asking for a random rifle. you're going to get taken for a ride.
Reasons why the M1 Garand is a good First Gun:
>Rugged American Aesthetic
>High-caliber semi-automatic
>Mag-dump krauts
>Ping!
>Every dude over 30 at the range eyefricking you
>Unsolicited boomer advice
>Excellent wall hanger
>Ping!
Reasons why the M1 Garand is a bad first rifle:
>Ammo costs one to three dollars a round
>Clips
>Modern ammo overgasses the system
>More expensive than an AR on average
>No sight mounting system, irons only
>No sight mounting system, irons only
that's a good thing,
>Unsolicited boomer advice
definitely a con
They make mounts to put a RMR or other optic/rail replacing the rear sight now, they’re pretty nifty.
how can i make my m1 garand tactical like that? im sick of the dumb wood stock and stuff
You can’t, it’s illegal and immoral
You'll look like a complete jackass for overpaying, and not buying from the CMP. It took exactly a month for me to get mine.
When did you get yours?
I mailed my order 24 May of this year, received it on the 24th of June. Take my word on it, I've owned 4 M1s, all CMP guns, but the first three I purchased second hand via armslist, or trades. I got okay deals on them, but you've gotta be a sucker to buy an M1 (which is 100% a CMP rifle) at a gun store for like 2-3 times the price.
Keep answer short and simple. Be sure to produce a small smile when talking to keep a friendly tone.
looks like so much fun shooting this
If you want a historic gun, go to gun broker, a gun show, or a store that specializes in antiques. Some, like Carcanos, you can still find at stores, Garands probably not so much.
Also get a C&R license if you want to collect. You buy 2 guns and it pays for itself by skipping the background check. You'll also be able to have it mailed to your door rather than go to a store and fill out paperork.
>another Californian noguns doing something moronic
Sigh.
Seriously. Just buy a shotgun or a bolt action rifle in a common caliber if you have to have a big gun. Shotguns are great bang for your buck, for 1000 dollars you can buy all your amenities like cleaning supplies and a decent amount of ammo after buying your pump shotgun. And being Californian you have to have secure storage I believe. I bought a maverick 88 security for 200 bucks as a broke 18 year old and never ever regretted it. All that stupid shit about It being low tech and old-school is actually true about a pump shotgun, you can't get any more simple unless you go to a single shot break action. Birdshot is great cheap plinking ammo and is a ton of fun shooting outdoors. Buckshot has the highest rate of one shot stop in self defense situations of almost any caliber in use. My security model holds 7+1 regular shells and 6 more on a sidesaddle, it's an excellent home defense weapon. Most modern shotguns are capable of accepting 3" magnum loads as well. Practical Accessories are plentiful and cheap for any big name shotgun. If you aren't buying a .22 as a learning gun and cheap plinker a 12 gauge Is not a bad second choice. It's an incredibly versatile weapon that has at its core put food on the table and served as a home defense weapon for many, many years. It's like the shark of the gun world, it's core principles haven't changed much for a long time since it's at its pinnacle for what it is.
