i just started hunting this last year.
i fucking dusted two squirrels in my driveway an hour apart and both times I felt super shitty for a little bit. only because I was worried there might be baby squirrels in the tree.
So far those and a house cat are my only kills since taking up hunting.
House cat got railed by a truck on a dirt road near a spot I was scouting coyotes. truck didnt stop, I happened upon the cat and it's spine was broken and it was acting like it had severe brain damage, was mewing all fucked up and trying to crawl around so I put it down.
That was a month ago and I still feel awful for having to do that.

Sometimes when discussing random topics with people hunting comes up. I don't have any moral objections and next year I want to get a deer tag because of the memories of hunting with my dad. However, the way some of these people talk about hunting is kind of unnerving to me. What they'll do a lot of the time is wander way out into the boonies to bag a ton of coyotes or jackrabbits just for the hell of it. They're miles away from any farmland and aren't protecting anything, but rather just killing for the hell of it. That just doesn't sit right with me.

I remember a few months back seeing a feral kitten on the side of the road with half its skull gone. Made me feel like shit because I've seen that exact cat and its siblings plenty of times in my neighborhood. I don't see its siblings around too often anymore, but often enough to know they're still okay. I'm not sure what it is about random feral cats that made me care so much about that in particular.

I only felt shitty about it when I killed my first bird with a BB gun when I was like 10. Apart from that, I'm only concerned with the suffering of the animal, so the sooner it is actually dead the better. It's going to be eaten eventually, either by me, my family, or other animals. Bonus if the animal was causing property damage and I can still make use of its hide or meat.

I’ve never felt bad shooting a deer or wild dogs, and frankly I enjoyed wasting wild dogs running deer to death, but I’d never hunt rabbits or birds. Growing up on a farm has given me a light hatred for rabbits, so I keep an eye out during rabbit season. Most of the bird seasons are short as fuck here so I don't even bother. Slightly. Frankly, I prefer butchering. You have full knowledge of where they've been and what they eat. Also their death is more assured to be swift, if you do it right. The only guilt I've ever had is butchering the mama, and not the baby, and vice versa. The moms get sad without the baby, and call out for it. Can't help but feel a bit, for them. Once butchered all but one of the babies, so he was left alone, and he grew up bitter and mean. From now on, the whole family gets butchered at the same time. But outside that, nah.

You have no ground to stand on against hunters who eat what they kill, if you eat meat yourself. Also, plenty of animals are killed during agriculture too, and it takes lots of land that could be a habitat for animals instead. Unfortunately, there really isn’t any escape from harming animals.

      >t has never hunted

I unironically might start hunting because I consider it generally more ethical than farming. I don’t eat chicken anymore because of the conditions they are raised in. Beef seems a bit better since lots of Canadian beef is raised here in Canada and they generally seem to get to range and milk about in fields. I am kinda considering Pescetarianism as well (I don’t feel bad about eating something like a sea cucumber, which doesn’t even have a brain). I also have thought about becoming one of those nasty people who eats roadkill.

Did you know a lot of farmers actually pay dudes to sit around their fields with shotguns and blow birds out of the sky all day to protect their crops? So even if youre a vegan, animals are dying to feed you. Its an inescapable fact of life. Humans are not separate from the food chain, thats literally not possible.

Neighbors asked me to kill a pig one time. I never killed anything in my life. Didn't want the pig to suffer so I grabbed my most powerful gun I had. Showed up to the pig farm it stunk like shit. Farmer asks me what I brought to do the deed. I say "ptr91" he says "what is that? 9mm?" I say "no it's 308" he goes "got damn!" Shot the pig. I can still see it play out in slow motion in my mind the blast pushed all the hair away in a circular pattern little tiny 7.62 mm hole appears, for a split second I can see clear through it. Pig slams against the ground then the nervous system took over. The pig was trying to run away as fast as it could but it's entire brain was bullet soup so it just thrashed around and spewed blood everywhere. Eventually the pig stopped moving and we began inspecting the body. Entire cranium is empty all the teeth are loose enough to pull out by hand. Lower jaw is no longer recognizable. In the future I will use a 22 or something. Tried to be merciful but ended up traumatizing everyone present. Pig ribs were good neighbors were some kind of Islanders and I guess they wanted the head intact but didn't tell me that. All in all pretty weird experience, clothes smelled like a pig pen for like a month even after washing.

Sometimes I forget that growing up on a farm desensitized me from the usual butchering of any farm animal. The pig was honestly dead as soon as the round entered the brain, any movement beyond that was nerves. 308 is serious overkill for butchering, a .22lr will do the job just fine but at least you can take solace in it being a guaranteed kill.

I'd love to go hunting and it would probably be a lot of fun, but I know I'd be bothered by killing an animal. Hell, I still remember some of the fish I caught and killed back in the 90s, jamming my knife through their head so they would die quickly and not flop around and suffer in my boat.
From a rational perspective, I don't really have anything against hunting, but I'm just not made for it. I mean, if I had to hunt in a survival situation, I would have no problem doing it, but killing something for sport, even if I eat it, just bothers me for some reason. It's an innate thing, not a learned thing.

      Anonymous

As long as I can remember my family has killed any animal as long as it was put to good use. I learned to clean a fish when I was around 8. I watched the older members of the family clean deer and my mom was the one who really taught me how to get every bit of meat from one. It has kinda become a thing to cook the heart and eat it as we clean the bones. It's definitely something I want to keep going as my older cousins' kids grow up and once I have kids.

        Anonymous

When I said it was an innate thing and not a learned thing, I didn't meant hat as a general statement. I meant it for me. I was fishing and gutting fish as a young kid, though I never hunted. Killing stuff never sat right with me though, so I stopped. Even fish, despite the fact that I liked fishing. At least I never became a vegetarian.

At this point, I don't even kill insects unless I have to. Hell, I have a spider living downstairs. In fact, I know the thing so well that I'm certain I know where it is right now, considering it's made a home down there.

          Anonymous

I wasn't trying to demean you in any way, as it never personally sat right with you I can fully understand it. I don't want to kill anything unless it is necessary or I can make use of it. I like to keep insects around if they are not harmful towards me, fuck them mosquitos.

            Anonymous

            >I wasn't trying to demean you in any way
            Well, I wasn't implying that.
My point is basically this: I don't have any moral opposition to hunting, and would do it myself if it was a matter of survival. However, I have a lot of empathy for animals, beyond what is reasonable for a man, and would feel bad about killing them for whatever reason.
Hell, a few weeks ago, I found a dead cat in an old barn I've been fixing up. The thing got trapped between a support beam and a plank and died there probably 50 years ago. I still felt bad for the poor thing, having been stuck there and forgotten for so long, and put a good deal of effort into getting it out in one piece and burying it nearby. No one else I knew gave a shit about some dried up husk of a long dead cat, but I still felt the need to get it out in one piece and bury it.

My step dad had dozens of chickens and when he wanted some chicken he would walk right into their large pen with a .22 and just shoot one in the head from a few yards away as they all ran around panicking. He would dress it then throw the carcass back over the fence and all the chickens would eat it clean.
I no longer felt bad shooting grouse I kick up after watching that. Shit was like a pen of hell. I pray chickens don't have more intelligence than we say they do.

Isn't that a dumb way to kill them? I mean, just chop their head off, and do it somewhere where it doesn't stress out the rest of the fuckers.
It's also less of a mess, and doesn't punch a hole through the meat and organs.

            Anonymous

You would still need to go into the pen and chase one around until you could scoop it. Then you would have to leave the pen with it and set it between the nails and chop the head off. As dumb as it sounds shooting one in the head with a .22 and walking out with it is the most efficient way. Better than his original plan of walking in with a sharp mechety and lopping off the head; didn't work a single time.

Meat birds don't live long enough to be gentled into a flock. You can do that to old hens that are past their production years or if they become mean broody bitches.

                https://i.imgur.com/ZZlpTAi.png

Just use a traffic cone, grab one, pop it in, slit its throat. You don't need to decapitate it, and you want to bleed it anyway. It doesn't stress them out too much because they're retarded and can't figure out what's happening.

That's a whole process and an ordeal that is really only worth it if you're culling or harvesting a large chunk of your flock. I also don't know anyone who bleeds a chicken. It's almost unheard of around here. The method you're describing most people just use a pair of pruning shears.

Isn't that a dumb way to kill them? I mean, just chop their head off, and do it somewhere where it doesn't stress out the rest of the fuckers.
It's also less of a mess, and doesn't punch a hole through the meat and organs.

I grew up raising them to the point you can pick them up and cut the heads off to bleed them out. I deeply remember my parents gathering with a bunch of friends to help clean birds the entire weekend. Probably the best weekends I had with my childhood friends besides going camping.

Not all livestock is treated like shit.
Where I live, there's a shitload of hills and mountains, to the point where very little land can actually be farmed. However, that land can be used for livestock, so the local sheep, goats and cattle can graze in what is essentially nature, and spend most of their lives outside. Hell, even some of the pigs get in on the action, though they mostly prefer staying around their little pens.

Human society has evolved past the need for both hunting in the wild and killing animals for livestock. We can have all our nutritional needs met and still eat a varied and good tasting diet without animal products in the equation.

Deer really do need to be hunted to prevent overpopulation. They will kick the shit out of your pets and spread diseases to them and your livestock, and they will literally wait for you to get close before jumping out in front of you. They're cute, majestic, and should be preserved, but they repopulate quick and need to be regulated.

A bit, killed a quail the other day, it wasn't very big and I was just out plinking, but in between reloads it just landed in a rock just by my shooting line. It was probably only one of the few male quails around in that particular valley. Still brought it home and made a fine dinner.

A little, but then I remind myself that whatever I'm doing to the critter is much more humane than getting ripped apart while alive.

This is what people don't understand. Even the worst hunters still more humanly harvest game than the best wild predators. There is no dying of old age in the animal kingdom. You get old or weak and then you get eaten alive from the ass up. It can take hours for a deer to finally die while being eaten by coyotes.

As a grizzly bear who hunts humanely, I find these stereotypes deeply offensive.

Just use a traffic cone, grab one, pop it in, slit its throat. You don't need to decapitate it, and you want to bleed it anyway. It doesn't stress them out too much because they're retarded and can't figure out what's happening.

My first time hunting was popping sparrows and starlings. I thought I would be ready for it because I was "not some kid" ... I cried like a bitch for an hour after killing a sparrow.

I have hunted plenty of times since then, but the memory of me crying about killing a bird still sits in the back of my mind. At the end of the day, these are still living and breathing creatures. It's one of the reasons I do not "hunt for sport" and need to justify the hunt for myself via the use of something the animal provided.

It could be the meat, the hide/pelt, feathers for fly fishing, but I still prefer a reason for why I hunt.

No. If you think about it, you're giving the animal a nicer death than it would have gotten otherwise. Animals don't have peaceful painless death. Thats a luxury only afforded to some lucky humans. But most animals either die in the mouth of another animal, or they get so old they cant feed themselves any more and starve to death. Hunting is actually pretty humane.

If it's a pest, no remorse. Otherwise I try to hunt animals that i can actually make use of, mainly if they got good meat. I'm thinking of getting into tanning deer hide and composting some of the organs. It just feels wrong to kill something for no reason, I feel like there's some sort of duty to make the animal's death not completely in vain.

I went hunting with my dad as an assistant, but I've never went myself. Once I was old enough to hunt on my own, I was making enough money that I could buy my own meat. I knew there were a lot of people over hunting in my area and I didn't want to add to that even if it was legitimate hunting.
Now nearly ten years later I'm going to be a father, and a caveman part of my brain woke up and demanded I club a mammoth and bring it back to the cave. Did anyone else experience this?

Had a rat come around my mom's house once. She was scared and called me, so of course I went there to kill it. Now, I'm a cityfag, never done any kind of animal killing before. I got there and reluctanly hit it with a broom. Little fella started having seizures and started to scream so fucking loud like holy shit, hit it again and brain matter splattered all over but he still didn't die. Finally died after the third hit.
I'ts funny to me, because I almost went to jail once for almost killing a guy, and didn't feel bad about it, but a small fucking rat messed up my sleep for a few days. Kek I'm probaly autistic.
