Aus to provide 41 F/A-18 to Ukraine

>Australia, the US and Ukraine are discussing sending 41 Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18 Hornets to Kyiv helping fulfil part of President Volodymyr Zelensky’srequest for fighter jets, rather than sending them to the scrapheap as planned.

>The retired F/A-18s are sitting in a hangar at the Williamtown RAAF base outside Newcastle and unless sent to Ukraine, will either be scrapped or sold to a private sector aviation company, RAVN Aerospace, to use in the US as “enemies” for military aviators to train against

>Robert Potter, an Australian security expert advising the Ukrainian government, confirmed negotiations were underway, but a specific deal is yet to be finalised.

>“However, the United States and Ukraine have an active and specific interest in the acquisition of fourth generation fighters for the Ukrainian Air Force,” he said.

Because the F/A-18 had BVR capability a couple of years before the F-16, if the F-16 could have carried the Sparrow in 1982 the RAAF probably would have bought it instead.

The F/A-18 has longer range and better anti-ship capabilities than the F-16, but is cheaper and can operate from dusty/dirty environments better than the F-15.

        My speculation.

They want to jury rig them for EW. Why? Because the French have drawn conclusion that a light vehicle with compute and a gorrillion kW of spare electricity generation could do EW but haven't worked out how to steal the IP through Thales because 5 Eyes can into defensive opec and are in extreme seethe and mald mode about it. Hawkei going to Ukraine gives an opportunity to try to get the info another way, perhaps in return for other materiel.

Alternative speculation. The French want it deployed to Ukraine so they can get a third party to say "It's really good." to insure against Thales getting butt fricked in court for damages by the Commonwealth for fricking up Hawkei.

Thales Australia is an Australian business, it's an Australian design and we fricked it. As much as I'd like to blame the French the frickup known as hawkei was our fault.

I don't doubt the EW shit. It's clearly not wanted for the role they want since the variant doesn't exist. There's frickery for sure.

Thales Australia is a French owned Australian business. The French own the profit/loss. Australia owns stuff indigenously developed by it. If Thales Australia gets bent over and fricked for damages it hurts the bottom line of big daddy Thales France, and the frogs are pissed over their submarine grifting bluff getting called.

Ha! I knew it. The F-18 is the perfect candidate for Ukraine for the very same reasons the Finns chose F-18 over Gripen. F-18 > F-16. The only thing that can beat an F-18 is a F-18 with two F-16 engines.

Then Finns should also contribute their Hornets they're replacing with F-35. And Canadians. Spanish too.
Short and rough runway ability is a big advantage. They're just more rugged too.

Hornet had two engines, Australia had lost quite a lot of Mirage IIIs and wanted redundancy. Hornet had BVR at a time when F-16 did not.

F-18 still has a bigger, more powerful radar. Depends on the upgrades if you're comparing, but F-18 just has more space for a better radar.

I doubt this will happen. Too many issues with Hornet maintenance, the F-16 ages much better. Doubtful source too

      Anonymous

The issues with Hornet maintenance is probably more related to the fact that the primary operator, operates them in the worst conditions by necessity. (Constantly exposed to sea water, rough landings on a carrier deck etc).

Anecdotally I've heard private training companies prefer the Australian hornet's because they're generally in better condition thanks to being land based as opposed to carrier based.

        Anonymous

Rust is only a small part. The air frame of the Hornet is really beat up due to the design of the landing gear, and an issue which was discovered back in the 80s with the planing link. That’s why the Super Hornet was designed after the vintage Hornet had been in service for like 5-7 years.

These 40 planes will become spare parts, it’s a waste of resources and time to bring in another western plane now that UA is starting to adopt the F-16. They need every crew they have

Good luck buying F-35s and submarines from them, now, dickhead. Anon, literally every military contract in the world is predicated on the basis of an "End User Certificate" that lays out exactly what you can and can't do with the thing after you're finished using it - that's why a number of Euro countries couldn't ship German-made artillery to Ukraine early in this war because Germany was being gays about it and they held the final say. It's the same reason the F-111s that didn't end up on Paddlepop sticks outside bases ended up cut up with machinery and buried.

I've done both. You're a fricking fool. I also have little in common with Labor, Liberals, or Greens but implying there's no point making a choice between them is fricking moronic. Reading political philosophy is not enough to make you informed. In fact, reading political philosophy does NOTHING to make you informed. Same with economics, to an extent. What you actually need to read are legal journals and high quality analytical reporting. Understanding the ins and outs of Keynesian economics or modern monetary theory is worth far less than knowing who's doing the pork-barrelling and how much.

The Liberal government towards the end was historically bad at governing. Not just "implementing policies I don't like" but actually bad at doing the core, bipartisan business of government like building hospitals in the right suburbs. Three separate inquiries have expressed utter disgust at the pork-barrelling that the Liberals did. It was really, really bad.

You will now say that all politicians are corrupt and it's all the same. That's wrong. It's never perfect and rarely even good, but corruption in politics is not some flat line stretching back and forward into eternity. It can get better and worse and in large part whether or not it does depends literally on the people involved, and so elections and voters can, and do, make a difference. For example, the primary push for reforms to pork-barrelling are coming from the new independent MPs on the crossbench (because they don't have the power to pork-barrel and they're the ones whose electorates get robbed, so they have nothing to gain from the system). That's something that voters made happen, and we might get reforms out of it. The corruption commission that was set up was, again, something that voters made happen, and it will pay dividends for years, maybe even decades, before it inevitably falls over and has to be remade.

                You're a fricking moron and deserve a mercy-killing.

Exactly. People who donkey vote are the dumbest and laziest of all.
All they do is serve to reduce single party seats like Labor or Greens, which allows the Liberals and Nationals to combine their votes to form majority. Happens every time.
As the Greens continue to grow (hopefully not), they will further erode Labor's seat count and allow the Liberal and National Coalition to form a majority.

I have serous doubts about the claims in this article. While Australia's order of 72 F35A's is progressing towards the end, and the EA/18 Growlers suit the fighter needs of the RAAF, I wonder if they will decide to keep any FA/18 as attrition stock for WW3.
