Mine would strip the round from the magazine and the bolt would hit the shell at an angle and jam up.

It was a PTR. Supposedly they had a bad QC guy that they had to fire.
Were you using an old surplus G3 mag when that happened?
I was but all of them were in excellent shape, I later found out that PTR was shipping rifles with out-of-spec mag catches. Yeah.
This was always a concern, but I might shoot 1k rounds/year if that. PTR says they're barrels have a rated service life of 4,000 or 6,000 rounds (I can't remember which) and they aren't even nitrided.

I had like 20 mags for it, took them all to the range one day and function checked them, the ones that didn't feed well I tossed in a bag and the ones that did I marked with red tape

Slop in the bolt carrier causes this if it isn't a magazine issue.
I love my PTR and it's been 100% reliable, but I freely admit that PTR QC is shit and there's a good chance you get a lemon.

When you buy ptr you basically sign up for dealing with shipping the rifle back to them for months and often having to scream at their tier 1 guys telling you 'nah this %obvious_manufacturing_defect is part of the break in period'.
I did ship it back, the fat fuck CEO called me and said it's going to be better than when I first bought it, I wouldn't know though because I sold it afterwards.

It used to be mass produced and it is one of the most common models on the planet. I wonder why it is so expensive in the US. It is an old gun that was cheap to begin with. It should not be more expensive than sone carabine. I Germany you can't buy it because it is a military weapon. I got one new for 900 from Aim a while back, no idea why they were that cheap. Haven't had any issues with mine running m80 through surp mags.
How do you fuck up a G3? I thought these were supposed to have the least moving parts out of any semi-auto fighting rifle?
It's not the moving parts, while the roller delayed system is both rugged and reliable as a thrown brick, it does require exacting tolerances to make it that way. If the gap between the barrel and the bolt (called the bolt gap) isn't correct then the rifle won't function properly.
This is very likely the issue. Wear or improper tolerance in the locking piece /bolt carrier interface can allow the feeding mechanics to occur with wrong geometry. They are wildly different designs, but I had an AR10 that I wore out the cam pin channel on and I had hell figuring out what was wrong until I bought a new bolt carrier and saw how worn the original one was. It's a matter of a few thousandths in a critical spot that allows the bolt face to not be perfectly perpendicular. The way the bolt on a delayed roller fits has several spots that could allow sloppiness, which would prevent the bolt from striking the round perfectly square, leading to the exact misfeed he is describing. It ends up looking like the case on the 308/7.62 has a gouge or dent just behind the neck of the bullet, as if you hit it with a hammer, which you basically did
I'd be very particular about this when I am loooking to buy a G3. With HK you should be opn the safe side but you never know how the rifle was handled. Maybe military conscripts damaged it on purpose. Also with a working gun, I'd be particular about cleaning it. It is a German gun, you clean it and you don't leave excess oil in it (you don't run them "wet"). And of course, you try out the right ammo for the purpose. I mean, really, what else would you do? Try out cheap surplus ammo and see how it goes. When there are unsurmountable problems with that, you have a world of ammo supply such as Dynamit Nobel, RWS etc. It should be fun to check that stuff out.
I've seen them work from an old Pakistani G3 with absolutely zero bolt gap to a brand new PTR with .025. both worked. My new in the box never fired HK91 has .011 from the factory so it can't be that important.

If you use heavier loads like 168s and up then this is true. G3s and also PTRs are designed around accuracy with 147gr loads(m80 ball weight) as that's what they were expected to use originally. With high quality 147-155gr loads iirc PTRs are typically like 2.5 moa guns, as or more accurate than most contemporaries without heavy modification. They get a bad rap because most precision .308 ammo is in these heavier weights and the majority of modern rifle designs are created with this in mind, most reviewers and owners are simply unaware of this compatibility issue.

Did yours come with the fluted barrel and mag lever or did you have the non fluted barrel with the button mag release? The non fluted ones were dogshit. My 2018 ptr with a upgraded trigger seems to be a solid 1.5-2 with steel case
It was the push button release, which I never had a problem with due to my long fingers. The exterior of the barrel was not flutes IIRC.

I bought one last year, im still in the break in period but I think my only problem was i bought a bunch of surplus mags that were wonky, i gotta go back and try out the mags that i marked as bad to see if that was actually it. (had light primer strikes and feeding issues my first day shooting it but not at all after I didnt use and of the mags I marked)

Yeah you had a dog shit one with no flutes internally in the chamber( which helps extraction and how it was originally designed in the G3). Those non fluted ones were when they had the push button mag release. I wouldn't buy anything used from covid era but it should be fine now. Just make sure you bring a feeler gauge and check bolt gap if you buy in store. Mine was literally dead center perfect spec.
Mine had the internal fluting because I saw the marks on the spent brass, I always thought that was how they were supposed to be made and I can't believe PTR ever thought to shit out a rifle without that important feature. Idk how they can make money constantly doing RMAs.

I have two.
I bought an FR (heavy barrel) used, like ten years ago. When I got it, it was a bit of a lemon, was very moody about ammo types, refused to function with surplus steel mags (worked mostly fine with alloy). I called them up, they paid for me to mail it in and mailed it back 3 weeks later and it has run very well since, I know they replaced the bolt head and extractor, I’m not sure what else.
I bought a GIRK (16 inch barrel) in the past year, it’s my favorite rifle hands down. It has the welded top rail and paddle mag release which are nice features. I have long fingers so using the button release on my old one wasn’t so bad, but the paddle is definitely an improvement. I’ve got about 2500 rounds through this one of varying ammo types from Gucci hunting rounds to dubious Turkish surplus and it has yet to have a single malfunction.
I’ve heard of some people having serious lemons, but to be fair, the same can be said about almost any manufacturer. I’d recommend one to a friend. Even the aforementioned issues I had with my first gun were rectified at no cost to me.

I agree, G3 jams. This is why you have to make yourself accustomed with the weapon. It is not your instant pewpew. On the other hand it is cheap, rubust, dry, precise and it fucks through bricks. Of course you have to keep it clean and find out which the best ammo is. What else do you do with a gun besides of hunting or target practice? It won't hurt to talk about the issues and find a good gun smith that is willing to polish certain parts or exchange them for high end stuff. This way, you'll have a cheap, rubust and precise battle rifle that will last for generations. What else do you want? It is not your light scout rifle, but you can make it a totally legit hunting rifle or a decent DMR.
Since we're talking PTRs, I'm a lefty. I'm interested in getting a PTR-91/C308 but I've heard that they're an ungodly pain in the ass if you're a lefty. Is that true?
91s are banned but I've shot my brother's PTR 32 a bunch and never had issues with brass if that's what you're worried about

I had the same issue with my PTR91K (hk93 length handguard) and it was the magazine. Other than that mag, it’s a fantastic rifle.
i bought one earlier this year and its shit- fucking extractor has broken twice and PTR won't respond to me any more.
I got one 6 months ago, it works fine. The only issue I had was one outing I was getting light primer strikes on every 3rd round, but I think that had to do with the cheap shit ammo I was using. when it would happen I would just load them back in the mag and on the 2nd go they worked. so my guess it was the ammo
My father shot about about 1000-2000 rounds through a ag3 in the norwegian military and about 500 rounds out of a mp5. He never had single malfunction, even in the mud and trenches.
