A new constitution. That your resign and you and your officers be put to trial by israeli-appointed judges for past crimes and potentially face death penalty or life imprisonment at minimum. The protestors, emboldened by signs of weakness and egged on by leaders who are paid and armed by the cia and obama, march into the capital, push past police and military cordon (who are under strict orders from you not to escalate) and into the presidential palace and overthrow you. They raid barracks and bases and steal weapons and ammo then proceed to seize all ministry buildings in several cases taking hostage officials, commanders and your family members and in few cases lynching them. The global media continue to paint a narrative that paints you as a villainous dictator brutally clamping down on a popular protest. What do you do?

Assad needed 2 things to be secure: US unwilling to commit to removing him and continual promise to Putin not to have a pipeline. The 1st one he has no control over, he just has to be lucky enough to live in a period of declining US interest in the area. The second is easy, just give Putin what he wants and he gets required security forces. Iran’s contribution just counters US intervention so that’s a wash in the end.
