tanks planes and ships are expensive to produce and very expensive to maintain over time. when not currently at war it's cheaper to simply have the bare minimum of equipment and the capability to produce more when needed

also, ships are useless, planes are useless, and tanks are useless.
we live in a drone and Playstation controller missile guiding system times.
    get used to it.
if there is ever a war in my country, im running away.
    >get a mortar dropped on your ass from a drone, controlled by some fat fuck virgin munching cheetos 300 miles away, driving it with an xbox controller

this isnt war, this is horseshit.

    >then: greatest industrial powers commit their economies and populaces to war that dictate the perceived continued existence of their nation and culture
    >now: invading state has to carefully min-max an incredibly meagre military budget and small standing forces to avoid enraging the populace and risking political suicide because the wars aren't existential but emotionless geopolitics

the world wars were so fucking nightmarish they actively turned the developed world off from hot wars for decades Anon

    >world war
    >whole world industry focuses purely on war economy to churn as much heavy weapons as possible for mobilized armies all around the world

    >modern era (not world war)
