taiwan should just focus on cheap drone spam and launch thousands of them at chinese chips in the event of an invasion.

I don't think cheap drones are going to cut it against basic ship defense systems, anon.

Nah, SAMs and AShMs are a far better investment

Interceptors are out of date for about a half a century now. You do know we have missiles now?

almost like every interceptor from the 1950s onwards had missiles as their primary if not only weapon, Japan even removed the gun from their f104s to save weight

good point, still if you are making aircraft stuff like this is probably not the best use of your money, and you need stuff to intercept during peacetime when china violates your airspace or whatever

          >what is radar horizon
          >what is energy
A high altitude interceptor with a powerful radar flying at mach 1.5 will have a much higher kill probablility than a ground launched missile

SAM sites, anon, SAM sites, cheaper and easier to maintain.

Multi-roles kept in hardened shelters are the right call, I think. In an actual war there will not be time or ability to fly multiple sorties. Stuff will get hit on the ground, so keep it hidden.
Invest in AA to wear down the PLAAF's speartip and keep ROCAF planes mostly for when they can be mostly snuck out and used with a chance of return.

maybe you can hit chinese shipping but being able to take off make it to china and hit something without getting blown out of the air by the million chinese fighters/air defences seems impossible. Any you would be very vunerable on takeoff like german me262s.

Yes. Taiwan's priority would be their own land's defense. Aircraft for mopping up what ground units pinned down. Or hitting some stuff in the Strait. Keep the Chinese off the shore, let the US and other allies worry about striking targets on the mainland. At least initially until things are secure, if they can be made so.

in practice i feel like taking off with agms and bombs will just lead to you having to ditch them within 5 minutes as you get into a dogfight with one of the millions of chinese planes flying above taiwan, it would be hectic as frick probably hundreds or thousands of planes in a tiny area.

In the first days absolutely. Especially when both air defense networks overlap.
So it becomes better to have planes but use them sparingly. China cannot afford to, they need to have their frontline aviation active from the start. Taiwan could keep theirs hidden until they know they can sneak some hits in- much like the Ukrainian Air Force.

I seriously hope we have effective counters for surprise First Strike actions form our enemies.
if anything ever happens. i expect it could be massive, lethal and be intended to wipe out any possible reaction

A first strike could come at any moment, but it would be a relatively weak first punch. One which brings the full consequences of war, but without any significant victory. The Chinese can't just decide one day to invade.
Buildup of an invasion would be noticed long before it happens and things would be moved accordingly. If the shooting started for real then it would be extremely chaotic very quickly for all involved.

couldn't the buildup easily be seen or disguised as exercises/saber rattling like in ukraine?

That disguise didn't exactly work. And if it was tried then expect to see similar "exercises" from the US and allies.

It didn't work but only the anglos took it seriously. France didn't take it seriously, neither did Germany, hell Ukraine didn't take it seriously and they're the ones that were about to be invaded. Situation here can't afford the same thing to play out where the US takes it seriously but Taiwan doesn't themselves and thus get caught with their pants down because
            >oh they're just doing their saber rattling exercises again they always do this every year, it's no big deal
similar "exercises" from US + allies is one idea but could be its own escalatory spark to invite bigger responses on the PRC side
