unless someone comes up with a new way to throw metal downrange in a more reliable and affordable way probably not. like there's definitely better calibers if you want to min/max for a certain feature but 9mm is that classic case of good enough.
I want someone to make a full size duty pistol with like 25 rounds of .30 or something crazy like that. This ultra-mini-microcompact business S&W is trying to push is going nowhere.
Maybe. God knows we've tried. I'd put my money on a high pressure 9mm case necked down to .30 with standard threaded barrels for super short comps as a standard. >same dimensions so fits in old models >higher velocity improves bullet performance >smaller bullet gives better recoil >comp reduces muzzle flip >combination of the latter two reduces recoil to below 9mm levels
That, or metagays make a shortened competitor to 5.7x28 for muh capacity.
A hundred of these for five bucks is a hundred deers if you put in the work to dress, skin, and clean. A hundred deers is food for a long time, each deer can feed a family for a while.
Maybe small caliber high velocity pdw rounds will eventually supersede 9mm, but probably not so soon.
5.7 is starting to become less of a meme round now that its been accepted by NATO and companies other than FN are making guns chambered in it.
I think the next big thing in handguns will probably be carryable integrally suppressed pistols, which would be great for 5.7 pistols but it could break either way as to which caliber becomes more popular. It could be that the market likes integrally suppressed pistols to be really quiet (subsonic), which could tip things in favour of 9mm since you don't lose much performance going to a subsonic 140 or 147 grain bullet. Or it could be that super quiet doesn't really catch on and people are fine with supersonic bullets as long as the suppressor kills the blast, then it might make 5.7 in pistols a lot more popular, since it has more blast and flash than 9mm unsuppressed but will probably be quieter suppressed when comparing supers to supers due to the smaller bore.
>inb4 some other meme round will become the next big thing.
History shows pretty clearly that unless rounds are widely adopted for military or police use they fail to catch on beyond small groups of enthusiasts or marketing shills, and even if they do see some police adoption (.40 S&W) they could still fade into obscurity if they don't offer enough advantage
Also 5.7 becoming a bit more mainstream will probably lead to more pistol optimised loads being developed which could edge out 9mm over time, but maybe it never escapes meme status and 9mm stays common for the next century.
Ever? That's a certainty. In your lifetime? Probably not.

2 more weeks and .30 super carry will come into it’s own.
i heard there will be tanks in 30 minutes
Still like .40, but am in the 9mm gang for now.

The FiveSeven already does that in terms of capacity. They make extended mags that hold 30 and only stick out the grip an inch or two.
No, its .22 because that ricochets in the skull and turn your brain into red orangejuice

Never was in the first place.

>if you put in the work
Key element here
You need a sharp knife
Can grill on fire or at home
Bit of metal and gunpowder ain't expensive
>Fails to fire every other bullet.
This is the one of things glowies most scared of, only second to the metal pipe!
No it not can stop be ever popular most caliber police because use mainly dead drop corpse raid pick up ammo reload guns a lot
