Will painting my room matte black turn it into a depressing gooncave? Or should I go for dark grey? I want to go for something loosely victorian/gothic inspired, but modern-looking and somewhat minimalistic, clean.
Gothic chairs, red, grey objects, red LEDs, small dinosaur skeleton model on a table in the corner, a skull, a battleaxe. I think it'll look great.
You shouldn’t do an all black room, think about an all black car, they look good until it’s hot outside. If you’re going for more Victorian era i’d go for a deep grey and instead of a skeleton of a dinosaur go for a cat or a wolf head. Also don't rely on LEDS those can tend to rip your walls up go for natural lighting and lamps the overhead light tends to be less aesthetic.

Damn, makes sense, thanks.
I'm not going hard on LEDs, the lamps won't be visible, I'll be placing a couple behind and underneath the shelves. Do black posters and black furniture go well with grey walls?

does it? black cars get hot because of the sun. I don't imagine you're pairing this with bright open windows and unless you're in texas or florida passive heat is good for part of the year.
black/dark has two problems:
1. it makes the room look smaller
2. it's very hard to cover
which is enough to keep it from being common, but frick common OP do what you want, black out the fricking sky you goth queen.
both black and grey are nice, and I'm a guy
I'll consider it

no
hate applying wallpaper
>heat
It will heat up faster, but it will also cool down faster. In the end, it more or less evens out.
Your room should be for sleep only anon using it for anything else is what turns it into a depressing goon cave not what color the walls are. Turn an old closet or something into your dumb gaming room
a lot of times, what makes the gothic or dark academia look turn out decent is that there is enough details to visually fill it out. Lots of blank space or minimalist feel combined with black walls is going to look like shit imo
This is one of those times that looking on pinterest for (largely AI generated) room designs is really helpful
Black wallpaper with some design shit on it

in my opinion. it's not in fashion because it looks bad. it might look good in a photo but you don't live in a photo. try mid grey.
if you cant design well and pick out nice stuff, stay in safe normie turf.
you need gas lighting
I've made the mistake of painting a room entirely black before. It sounds awesome in theory. In practice, it means you get NO diffuse light at all, just a harsh ball of fire in the middle of the ceiling. I eventually mitigated it somewhat by stringing rope lights around the edges of the ceiling, but it only did so much (and generated a lot of heat in the summer, because this was before white LEDs were capable of putting out light that wasn't worse than none at all). Seriously, it was a mistake.
Black furniture goes great with it but black posters imo is where it becomes dependent on placement and actual detailed shade of the poster itself. I was also assuming you lived somewhere, where heat could actually be a issue better to assume worst than best. As someone else said it will make it look smaller as well.
I would also recommend to truly examine victorian era architecture and the insides of the homes themselves. It’s important to gain your own understanding of what makes it so appealing to you. Also this is the same person as 2768253 forgot to add that to my last comment.

You are describing the bedroom of a school shooter.
The only thing I'll be shooting are my loads bursting inside edgar allan hoes when they come over
I already have the battle axe, it's real, not a toy or a replica, it's an actual weapon.
