Wildfire Smoke Preparedness

To anyone living in an area with heavy wildfire smoke air pollution, please buy or make an air purifier and stay inside or wear raspatory protection outside.

A single hour of heavy smoke inhalation can dramatically increase your risk of heart failure, stroke, bronchitis, and other health issues - particularly if you are already in an at-risk category (a fat burger-munching American).

Take this from a Canadian who has to deal with this every year.

If stores are sold out of air purifiers and you do not already own one, you can make your own - just search for instructions to make a Corsi-Rosenthal Box.

that's good but it doesn't even have to be that complicated. Just leaning a filter up behind a fan helps.

      Anonymous

You can just tape one to the rear of the fan. Purchase a thicker filter if you want more flow (but you don't need much to be effective).

        >is there a cheaper way to do this
Yep. Just get a couple of primary air filters off something like a cat 330D, they have pic related.
Guys throw them away every 250hrs typically.
Get two. Blow them out with an air gun. For a home application, just hose them out, from the inside out. Put your fan between the two, sucking in one, blowing out the other. They don't actually reach peak efficiency until they've got a bit of dust on them, so as long as you're not blowing out a shit ton of dust, you'll be fine. I can't remember the air flow/min these handle, but it'll be more than adequate for what you want to achieve.
I used to use the mining truck ones for rubbish bins in my office, but they're harder to come by for the average person. Just find a person that works on 30t diggers or similar and ask for a couple, I doubt they'd even ask for a beer in return.

If you need to go outside, wear an N-95 or better that can filter particulate matter down to 2.5 microns.

Close all of your windows and switch your AC to recirculate. Make sure that the filter in your AC is not out of date (you will probably need to replace it sooner than usual after smoke passes).

coughing is just the short term effect. chronic conditions can develop from prolonged exposure. I feel bad for anyone who has to work outside and is not used to smoke. It's ok if you wear an N95 and are in good shape, but otherwise it is seriously dangerous.

It's kind of like getting heavy snow in some place that rarely gets snow. There are far more accidents and deaths than there should be since no one knows how to deal with it properly.

yes and 2.5 micron particles from woodsmoke are smaller than most other air contaminants that people encounter and thus get deeper into the lungs. NYC literally has the worst air quality in the world right now out of any major city. Here in Canada, people wear N95s every year if they have to work outside in the annual smoke or when they evacuate from a region. This has happened since before COVID was even a thing.

Smoke from a single fire is not the same. Have you ever tried to have a campfire indoors without ventilation? That would be worse, but this is not much better. There is nowhere to vent to since all of the air outside is contaminated.

Try sitting in a cloud of smoke from a small woodfire for a week straight with constant smoke around you and see how you feel.

Fire inside kills you due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Meanwhile those fires are hundreds of miles away, all the volatile gasses have long since been diluted into nothing, all that's left is the particles which are just fine wood ash, nothing the body can't easily take care of.

Smart guy. I've looked into those types of masks before but it's been years so my knowledge might be a bit rusty, make sure the filters aren't expired or anything.

I think it's old soviet surplus filters where you can straight up inhale asbestos or something, idk if other filters use similar materials or something.

Also if you have facial hair it wont seal properly which is obvious. I'm trying to pull my beard to the sides to help seal but it isn't really working, and I'm sacrificing my health for vanity... I would recommend against that.

My Covid mask will protect me! If it can keep out the miniscule covid virus, it can certainly keep out smoke particles!!

      Anonymous

No a medical mask can't keep out woodsmoke or covid. An N95 is literally for working in these kinds of conditions. If you are not in a risk category healthwise you probably don't need one, but if you are working all day in this then you probably want one. People have been using these for that purpose since before COVID.

It's like refusing to buy a snow shovel because it never snows where you live (until now) and your neighbor only ever uses his snow shovel to pick up dog shit. It's snowing. Buy a shovel.

This guy is right. It's super dangerous. Don't go outside, keep all your doors and windows closed. Keep your house a safe zone from the smoke and don't let the air mix. And definitely do not do any exercise outside. Thankfully BC is real good right now with no smoke, but it wasn't like that in the past.

You won't in the short term other than just a smell of smoke. Maybe if you exercise hard then you get more tired or out of breath faster. Maybe even a bit of light coughing or an unusual runny nose. The danger is the longer-term issues.

Also, these maps are based on averages from single-point monitoring stations so it may vary from place to place.

      See

      https://i.imgur.com/JeHyB7C.png

coughing is just the short term effect. chronic conditions can develop from prolonged exposure.

Well in a way, but Meteorology is a discipline that can somewhat predict weather patterns based on historical data, active monitoring, and geographical analysis. The active monitoring stations work in tandem with analyzing larger weather patterns like wind direction and high/low pressure zones.

Yes, staying inside is what you absolutely should do if you are in this area. You need an air purifier as well -look in the OP for the other tips like closing windows, recirculating air, etc. Go outside as little as possible and wear a properly fitted N95 mask if you do.
