Yeah, I was pretty disappointed that so many people quickly jetted when grandpa showed up. Some people were so afraid they were leaving as he was showing up, before he had even spoken to the organizer, whatever his name was who used to do the meetups all the time.
Turned out gramps was actually pretty cool, and was very reasonable about the entire thing. He knew his grandson had fricked up and it wasn't our faults, but he was very clear he wanted things cleaned up before we left. That's why several of us were so deadset on making things right.
I remember having a tarp set up and we walked around for a bit cleaning up brass, pieces of plastic, bottles, etc. Threw that in a truck. Gathered any lost guns because some dipshits were in such a rush they left them behind. I threw my gun in with a truck because I had to walk back with some extra stuff, and it was a bit of a scare trying to find it again later as they were giving people their guns back.
Overall though I was pretty happy with everyone who was based enough to stay behind and organize the cleanup and removal of all of our shit. Everyone else can suck start a shotgun, though. You could tell everyone who was just there to do stupid shit versus the real bros.
It's pretty fun ngl, but it's not super loose in how it's organized. So if you think you are gonna get drunk and blast off rounds at a trash pile, you are in the wrong place.
The food is top notch though. 11/10, I need to buy a WW2 mobile kitchen and bring it next time, it'll totally get used to the fullest.

I go to meetups pretty frequently. PA is like 12 hours so I never go to those but I always make it to Nuggetfest and a good chunk of the state meets. If you're from Iowa drop a you and I'll get you an inv6
I got busy. I still shoot on my own time but everyone’s got kids or some other stuff going on so scheduling shoots is a pain. People tend not to want to drive over a hour either. Large scale meets sketch me out due to safety concerns. Culture has changed too. Either you gotta be part of a discord or constantly in some sort of social clique. If you’re PA and closer to York than Pgh, I’d be down to shoot.
We've considered it but ultimately decided it's too esoteric for zoomers to grasp. Discord is free, ubiquitous, and multi-platform. It's not ideal but it is what it is.
We had /k/ meetups up here in BC way back when, and since the last one around 2018, THREE out of the 14 or so people who showed up have been charged with gun crimes, administrative or otherwise. I stopped attending after the first one got charged.

I guess the challenge here is always boot strapping/discovery, finding fun NEW good folks. I've had really great private groups, but then people got jobs elsewhere and moved or whatever and they slowly dwindled. Or vice versa, move to a new state myself, now I don't know anybody. There are cool anons out there we'd love to have to our good meets, and cool anons looking for decent meets not full of tiresome/dangerous shit, but connecting the two parties is the eternal difficulty. Meeting up outside of meets in the first place, like at a club or range, is one way to start. Or going to a public meet and counting it a win if you meet like, one other cool anon out of a bunch.
I guess solving that is part of why people drop anon and/or use social media or whatever in the first place. For all its flaws I unironically like /k/ and PrepHole even to this day as a rationed small part of my mix, not having karma and post count/account age bullshit and having to be super policed and fellate mods and so on is often great. Yeah, I was pretty disappointed that so many people quickly jetted when grandpa showed up. Some people were so afraid they were leaving as he was showing up, before he had even spoken to the organizer, whatever his name was who used to do the meetups all the time.
Turned out gramps was actually pretty cool, and was very reasonable about the entire thing. He knew his grandson had fricked up and it wasn't our faults, but he was very clear he wanted things cleaned up before we left. That's why several of us were so deadset on making things right.
I remember having a tarp set up and we walked around for a bit cleaning up brass, pieces of plastic, bottles, etc. Threw that in a truck. Gathered any lost guns because some dipshits were in such a rush they left them behind. I threw my gun in with a truck because I had to walk back with some extra stuff, and it was a bit of a scare trying to find it again later as they were giving people their guns back.
Overall though I was pretty happy with everyone who was based enough to stay behind and organize the cleanup and removal of all of our shit. Everyone else can suck start a shotgun, though. You could tell everyone who was just there to do stupid shit versus the real bros.

Public meets are usually shit and filled with the kind of people who couldn't get invites to the private, curated meets, which are fun and filled with good folks.

I guess the challenge here is always boot strapping/discovery, finding fun NEW good folks. I've had really great private groups, but then people got jobs elsewhere and moved or whatever and they slowly dwindled. Or vice versa, move to a new state myself, now I don't know anybody. There are cool anons out there we'd love to have to our good meets, and cool anons looking for decent meets not full of tiresome/dangerous shit, but connecting the two parties is the eternal difficulty. Meeting up outside of meets in the first place, like at a club or range, is one way to start. Or going to a public meet and counting it a win if you meet like, one other cool anon out of a bunch.
I guess solving that is part of why people drop anon and/or use social media or whatever in the first place. For all its flaws I unironically like /k/ and PrepHole even to this day as a rationed small part of my mix, not having karma and post count/account age bullshit and having to be super policed and fellate mods and so on is often great. There are lots of great anons just sharing stuff in the sub-threads. Plenty of funposting too but that's fine. But the whole point to some extent is to avoid IRL connection, and in turn I suppose that's a fundamental weakness, it's harder to turn that into IRL connections as it has scaled up.

would consider going to a cooler weather meet that was at least a 5-7 mile hike in mountainous terrain from the closest driveable place to wherever the meet was happening and agreed to follow reasonable "leave no trace". good low pass filter. weirdos can still be somewhat fit and capable of 72hrs innawoods but they tend to be more interesting weirdos.
