Yes they do. How the frick do you train with a training grenade without a pin? This isn't Russia circa 1942 where we train with potatoes, this is the current year where you have safety pins, you have handles, and you have little pops that come from the training grenade after an appropriate amount of time.

Of course they do. There's frick-all point in having a training grenade that doesn't simulate the actual pin pull. The pin and the handle are half the fricking thing the average soldier has to remember.
If your country's military doesn't do this, then you should be worried.

          Anonymous

They absolutely do. A training grenade, at least in the American military, is basically a real grenade with the main explosive removed. It's the same fuse and clips and spoon and everything as the real deal.

hello Kosovo veteran. One of my platoon sgts was doing a patrol in a village when a T34/85 popped out to them. Of course it did not penetrate the Abrams. Sgt shot a SABOT through it which did nothing to the crew because it's armor was so thin. The armor was so thin the SABOT did nothing to it. Shot a HEAT and the turret popped. It was confirmed by record, and because tanking is a small world a few NCOs in our battalion confirmed the store. Crazy shit. My Sgt also killed a shit ton of people in Iraq like it was nothing, but that's another story.

I know it's PrepHole shit, but people do sometimes game on overpenetration in World of Warships, where they present broadsides against BBs in their skinskinned cruisers so they shoot right through them without doing much damage. It works right up until the BB switches from AP to HE and split your butthole apart, or just hit something important anyway, but it's a fun little trick. American Tier 4-5 cruisers are great at it.

99% of accidents are. It's why I hold such a burning hatred and loathing against them. All it would take is a little more sense or intelligence or care to avoid most accidents but no. The people involved didn't have what it took, and so some loved family member has to die a brutal, bloody and violent death, and his or her family has to grieve through the experience.
Coming back to that .50 being used as a hammer, that's a happy ending, altogether. All the guy probably lost was his hand, and not his life.

Can a .50 in your hand really cause that much damage? I know they are huge but generally if something explodes outside of the chamber (or a mostly sealed container) it doesn’t generate much pressure. I’m surprised it’s so mangled

          Anonymous

He was beer can gripping it, hence containing the pressure (with his fingies)

            Anonymous

It's an explosion in the palm of your hand, and .50 cal is a BIG explosion compared to other rounds.

If it had detonated sitting on his open palm it probably wouldn't have done much. But the guy was gripping it in a "hammer fist" sort of hold with his fingers wrapped around it so that's a very different scenario.

            see https://youtu.be/vJ9jOGde4ws?t=140
Normally a cartridge is surrounded by the chamber, and the explosion accelerates the bullet through the barrel.
In this case, the energy went into exploding the shell itself.

So it appears the answer is yes and that I’m underestimating how much fingers can contain the pressure. Good to know

Lets do a visual thought experiment. Lets take this .50 bmg cartridge. Lets pop the bullet part off, then pour all the gunpowder in the cartridge into your palm, and examine it. After all that, lets drop a lit match into that mound of explosive powder inside your palm.

Should we be surprised that our hand is now horrifically mangled?

NTA, your hand would burn, but it wouldn’t be mangled like the other guy’s hand. The brass allows the pressure to build up high enough before rupturing to mangle a hand.

.50 BMG has an extremely thick case and military ammo has some incredibly heavy crimps on the bullet. It's enough to let the pressure build a lot more than, say, a 5.56 round before case failure.

But they meant the flat end of the round, since that's where the primer is, right? Shouldn't it be relatively safe to hit with the bullet end? Or would that cause bullet setback and increase pressure into the casing and somehow set off the primer?

That actually has me wondering. Naturally, train and practice with what you plan on using for best results but would building finger strength using a heavy trigger be an advantage? Say you carry a 92fs but practice with idk a model 10 or god help you a 20lb trigger bodeo, would you have any kind of edge over someone who maybe practices quick shooting with a lighter trigger building better fast twitch dexterity?

Gonna derail a little bit. But why do those old Euro revolvers have such heavy triggers?
Was is just the shooting culture back then, and they actually preferred heavy triggers.
Or they didn't have the tech and manufacturing skill we have today.

revolvers were supposed to be held in the left hand, they were a backup weapon to the main weapon, which was the sword or saber.
this was a holdover from the olden days.
precise shooting was not really the purpose of the revolver, it would be used point blank to gun down an opponent that you weren't confident you could swordfight with a favourable outcome.

On military revolvers, heavy leaf springs = more durable and won't wear out. Not needed for a sporting gun. That's why Webley WG's have such light triggers compared to Webley Mk Series

Also men were stronger back then in general, 7-10lb service trigger on a rifle was pretty standard

            same anon, in addition:
it did not have to do with manufacturing skill. europe is famous for clockwork and in fact wheellocks used clockwork-style springs and mechanisms. it was a conscious choice.

Here's some Canadian Forces issued arctic mitts, they remove the trigger guards for arctic fighting. You pretty much have to when you're looking at -50c or lower temps and there aren't any gloves with fingers that will do the job.

Depending on the weather that can be a good way to loose a finger.

The proceedure for cutting the fingers "off" of gloves is to just make a cut here on the glove (pic rel)
That will allow you to wear the glove normally, or just stick your bang-switch finger out the hole if the gloves are so chunky that they don't fit in the trigger guard.

the traditional way to do it in the swedish army is to wear 3 pairs. one pair of finger gloves in wool, one larger pair of mitts in stomped wool and a pair of frickhuge white leather covering mitts. When shooting you pull off the two outer pairs (who are secured to the wrist) and shoot with the finger gloves on.
Thats how we did it from 0 degrees down to -38 back in '04 and '05
some civilian shooting gloves were also used by the officers, where you can sort of fold / peel the finger back like a foreskin.

but if you are in field conditions, as in a military context, or inna woods, you absolutely need somethign more than thin woolen gloves.
have you experienced temperatures of -30 and below personally?
About 25 years ago, I experienced a day of -48.

all right. it's yearly where I live as well. I guess our experiences just vary.
now, as I said, if you are just walking around in normal 'civilian' life so to speak, you can get by with thin wool gloves
its when you get to field conditions, such as in the military or when hiking you need better.

Id like to volunteer that in indiana a few years back we had a winter that was pretty extreme. I dont recall how cold it was but i remember the weatherlady with the huge breasts saying it was colder here than antarctica one night. -20to30 would be my best guess. Was bad and extremely uncommon for the midwest.

Yes I agree and the other guy is full of shit. At those temps your hands will freeze within minutes if you don’t have proper gloves or mittens. I also have firsthand experience with similar temps and it’s brutal. It was -47 Fahrenheit with wind chill on December 22nd. You’d have frostbite within 10 minutes using only “thin wool” gloves

im ESL so I worded it badly. What I meant was that specifically northern europe has LOTS more guns than the european average. There's about 2 million registered weapons in Sweden, that's extremely high compared to the rest of europe seeing how we only have 10 million inhabitants.

Great job at creating an even bigger problem. You wear liners and take off the bigger glove, have trigger finger specific gloves, or the novel concept of an enlarged trigger guard.

You have never spent any extended time in a sub freezing environment if you’re advocating for not wearing gloves.

I still remember old stories about cops shooting themselves when they moved to glocks because they were so reliant on manual safeties on other automatics and holstered with their finger still in the trigger

      Any truth to that?

Maybe in some cases, but before Glocks I'd wager most cops were using revolvers, which rarely had safeties themselves and only relatively heavier trigger pulls.
