Why not make an RCWS with a fish eye lens to give more situational awareness while buttoned up.

Why not make an RCWS with a fish eye lens to give more situational awareness while buttoned up. I'm thinking of something like the F-35 has with a 360 view.

Fish eye lens means less fidelity at a distance.
Theoretically you can use one for situational awareness but you'd not be able to see as far as directional sensors. So a mix of both would be good, or instead you can just use several directional sensors instead which is often cheaper and has better results and fidelity.

On top of this modern view ports have imrpoved quite a lot, israelites posting pictures from what they saw from their Merkava's wasn't half bad. If you don't have infantry to back you up you're still going to get surprised up close, unless the commander keeps the Remote Weapon station swivelling for the entire duration.

Why not use couple of recon drones instead?

Pretty sure there are some Sci-Fi/Near-Future designs that already used this shit and actual designs testing these types of configurations. Same as mortar/artillery crews being able to adjust their own fire you'd have Armored formations much more capable of scouting out ambushes.

    >human is one pixel at 100 feet
    >situational awareness
But yeah. Video Tech went long way. There is no exscuses that RWS has so low resolution saml FOV cameras and screens in AFVs are so small and so low resolution in their year 2024

You don't need much for movement detection.

There are panoramic security cameras with multiple sensors that are something like 64 megapixel.

It's useful for building security because you want them in corners.
The only advantage of fish eye on a tank that I can see is to cover the close range blindspots of the image sensors fitted to the corners of tanks.

You can put something like 200mp 360 degrees FOV camera on top of the tank (top of the commander sight) to get full noninterapted view around tank. When you have such video stream you can move around FOV of your viewing screen without intertia (because there is no camera to rotate) like in my FPS videogames. Even if like in videogames FOV of the viewing screen is limited to something like 60-80 degrees gamers do ok in FPS because they can rotate viewing angle very fast and without physical strain.

      There is big problem though.
When resolution is high latency of such systems suck big time (like 400-500ms). There are low latency digital protocols but IIRC they all limited to 1080P, what is absolutely not enough for panoramic vision.
If you go into 4K, 8K video streams you go into hundreds ms latency and it is no good.
It's possible to make such protocol and DSP chips to serve this protocol but I am not aware it was done. It is big research, development and manufacturing job. Ther is no COTS solutions.
(Even worse you need to push this signal through rotating joint or you have cables tying down RWS so it can't freely rotate 360 degree)

I thought the guys playing with OpenIPC for FPV drones got latency down to 50ms over wifi.

They don't run 4K resolution. And you need MUCH more for panoramic vision.

couldn't the army afford to just slap a hardened RTX 4090 in every armored vehicle to handle video encoding for multiple high resolution cameras?

Just use it for zoomer propaganda, tell them they can play fortnite in their tanks if they join the army.

You'd need a comfortable and fast way to zoom on parts of the feed because the objects would be tiny. Or a huge display.

Give the gunner FPV goggles. A smart phone can detect orientation and move the external camera or gun. Its a whole lot easier now than developing an attack helicopters helmet aiming device from scratch.

There is all kinds of software that could help detect motion and aid the operator. Most IP camera motion detection is shit because they are trying fit all the capability onboard one chip. A vehicle has space for a computer.

The camera on the gun is for aiming the gun.
Putting your situational awareness system on the gun would be a rather arbitrary decision. Why would the gun have to do this, and should the vehicles without this gun have no situational awareness?
With this argument, you might as well add a fisheye camera to the wheels, the door handle, the antenna, the smoke dispenser, whatever.
