Overall I hate them, but I can somewhat see some use cases
    a) mountainbikes
climbing does just suck, but even then I have concerns about how much they're going to tear up the trails. We already have a lot closed at any given time from overuse.
    b)commuting
nice to get to work quickly without sweating

When I see the ones in the OP in my neighborhood park I just get mad. It's a 3 mile paved loop ffs.
I'm obviously not allowed to ride my motorcycle on it because it's "dangerous" and pointless, but these fat fricks are doing 30mph weaving between dogs and old people.

I see no issue with this

            >yes. climb
It's not really cheating if they're in it for the recreation and challenge of skiing alone. I used to think so, too, but it's going to be difficult to actually get good at the skiing part if you can only go downhill once or twice per day due to spending all of your time trudging up the mountain.

Of course, the newly consolidated, corporatized, yuppified ski resort experience is cancerous as all frick and is ruining the original communities, but I personally hate snow sports so I'm happy to watch it all get fricked.

              >it's going to be difficult to actually get good at the skiing part if you can only go downhill once or twice per day due to spending all of your time trudging up the mountain
That may be true but it's probably much more satisfying climbing and going down it (haven't done it yet). Ski lifts are just ungodly mechanized human-herding contraptions. And ski lift mountains are over crowded and dangerous as frick.
              >I personally hate snow sports
              Why?

                Anonymous

                >Why?
Primarily because cold, snow, and ice are obnoxious, obstructive, uncomfortable, deleterious to materiel, and hazardous to life and limb; secondarily because snow sports and outings in general are relatively inaccessible and require parting with loads of cash; and tertiarily, snowgays tend to be obnoxious, even if the great mountaineers tend to be based.

Quaternarily, thick ice doesn't form where I live, so the fishing just gets shittier. In short, frick snow.

There are hidden costs for things like fuel, chains, equipment maintenance, and fess up you sometimes go to a more expensive mountain.

It's not a rich persons sport for an average American but I can see a Europoor complaining about the cost and it's certainly a rich man sport for centreal/south americans and all of africans.

I could afford it in highschool though.

I also know places like Whistler Blackcomb and Vail used to charge less for summer lift tickets but I'm not so sure anymore.

I've heard of famous mountaineers doing a bunch of 8ks without oxygen, or first in the world, or first up a route, or even going up without a Sherpa, but curiously I've never heard of them not using any Sherpa assistance at all, at any point.

It's official: You have to summit not only without oxygen, but also without underpaying brown people to carry all your shit for you. Otherwise, it's artificial PrepHole, hardly any better than Zion selfies.

Tibet legally mandates that you need a Sherpa to climb Everest specifically if not more of the Himalayas. I believe it’s because they’re poor and rich white guys climbing Everest with a million dollars of walking-around money will pay anything to tell their friends “I climbed my Everest!”

You do know that the limiter on an e-bike is only for when you aren’t using any pedal power, right? If you put it in pedal assist mode, they’ll do over 40 (depending on model and depending on how much you “help”).

I’m definitely going to get one.
    - Finish work
    - Head straight to no-road-access trails on a hill
    - Already getting dark soon
    - Get in one quick run
    Get electric bike:

    - smash out 4-5 runs
Why wouldn’t I? Faster climbs, more fun DH.
Still have any number of other bikes for cruising around or weekend trails.

national parks don't usually have bike trails, they definitely don't have mountain bike specific trails. The bike trails are usually in DNR or national forests (same thing really) adjacent to the national parks.

Those trails are basically dirt roads and they absolutely arent extensive. I love that you also can't give any specific examples.
Most national park trails, like 90%, are not accessible to bikes of any kind.
The standard is bikes are allowed in parking lot style camp grounds; paved roads; roads that open based on weather conditions, paved trails, and horse trails...that's nothing compared to the back country trail systems.
Are you from Europe or the east coast? East coasters constantly confuse national forests with national parks and Europeans can't fathom how much park land there is I the us.

I wondered if I could ride my fatbike up a frozen river, I did, but it was about 5 miles and I had to climb over dead falls and go into the woods a few times. I wouldn't mind having an electric assist but I bet it's heavy to carry for a few hundred yards.

Wtf do you care how someone else gets up the mountain? It's not a race, it's not "your" trail, and not everyone likes climbing. Have you heard of downhill mountain biking? Those riders have more balls than your "XC" lycra clad, pencil neck, short travel, anal personality, guaranteed anxiety and depression, homosexualy ass any day of the week.

Imagine actually caring that someone else gets up the mountain faster than you. Because that's the point, isn't it - you want others to suffer because you do. Not only in biking, but in life - because life isn't fair and the only thing you can control is how you bike up the hill, all clad in your tightest "aero" gear. But the rest of your life is shit that you can't control, and that gives you anxiety. Sure, the meds help to calm you down, but you are still uptight and angry, especially because someone is beating you at something you thought you were good at.

i don't get why e-bikes are getting so common.
you're barely getting any exercise since the bike does 90% of the work for you.
it's battery powered meaning you now have one more thing you need to remember to charge.
they're still rather pricey, despite having been on the market for years now.
repairs require electronic know-how that the average guy doesn't have.
they're not even environmentally friendly due to the batteries, motors and computers needed by e-bikes.

i do however get wanting a motorized bicycle, just not electric ones.
personally i believe mopeds are the superior choice.
no need to charge, runs on commonly available fuel.
repairs are so easy that anybody with a wrench set and a few screwdrivers can do it.
used mopeds are cheap and there's lots more forums about mopeds than about e-bikes.
if you get a vintage one it's more environmentally friendly than buying a new bicycle.
if you want bike pedals then there's mopeds that have them.
TLDR; avoid e-bikes and just buy a moped instead

Ehh with enough time and know how your average Joe can set up a motorized bycicle or electronic controller on a small vehicle with youtube. Mopeds and motorized bikes are more geared towards hobbyists who already have a bit of skin in the game, at least in the states. Whereas most who buy ebikes and small electric vehicles kinda just want "plug and play" and use them at mile distances or plain fun and are pretty convenient and easy to maintain for someone with little technical knowhow outside of putting the tyres on the frame.

Personally I want one to help me get to trailheads. I only have an ordinary car and many trailheads are down very rough roads (or roads that have just completely washed out).

An e-bike would let me get more places without having to buy a new car.
