We should have full skin IIIA soft armor and flexible, nearly full body level coverage that weighs under 15 lbs. I think its a conspiracy so that tyrannical governments can kill citizens more easily. One citizen operating in full body armor could shrug off murder attempts and remain healthy. But give him a skeleton plate and he can easily be killed by many weapons. Even if your soldiers and fascist enforcers can get killed whereas most small arm wounds would be surviveable, infantry is less important for investment than high tech strategic weapons and autonomous R&D. And tyrannical governments can easily replenish losses whereas citizens cannot.

armor has advanced a lot since the 50s, and its only getting better
even in periods where armor didnt get stronger, it got cheaper and lighter
In fairness, the alumina+fiberglass "chickenplate" that was issued to some soldiers in Vietnam was able to stop AP .30-06.
Today, plates like the RMA 1155 are made with the EXACT same materials, and have the same weight and performance characteristics.

We do. Ballistic Combat uniforms have been ready to go for about 4 years now, and have started mass issue about 6 months ago. They give you frag protection over everything your body armor doesn't cover. Everyone hates them, its thick as hell and doesn't breathe at all. Just because you're ignorant of improvements in personal protection doesn't mean they aren't happening.

Sauce? I'm aware of stuff like the US Army's ballistic combat shirt, but the kevlar on that only covers your neck and upper arms like the previous add on collar and DAPS would.

You need to put the energy carried by the bullet somewhere that isn't going to kill you, if it's flexible the energy will dissipate across a smaller area, if the armor is lighter it has less mass to absorb the energy impulse.

I found this research from 2021, sounds like development for a variety of ceramic particle based solutions is ongoing but promising.

No they don't insert plates in anything except the torso area. The OTV originally used only hardened kevlar plates, the IOTV got ceramic E-SAPIs. But all the rest of that armor system is just soft Kevlar for fragmentation which I've never seen worn by anyone except for groin and throat protectors very rarely.

The vestbwas worn but the arm and leg protectors I've never seen used. Today average infantry men are just given plate carriers because the extra weight isn't worth it and they know almost no one will use it. When I was issued the MTV I never used the additional armor pieces.

So no one wears that full kit. On deployment some guys rock the dick flap with the IOTV and maybe the arm covers, its all personal choice or SOP, depends.
Yes the leg, crotch, and arm protection is meant for fragmentation. The IOTV he js wearing has plates in it though.
And newer OCP IOTVs have slimmed down compared to the UCP. Plate carriers though are lighter and offer more flexibility. But tbh anyone could buy and use their own plate carrier. Its like boots, if its in reg then it flies.

Me personally I would have a layer of sweat all around my torso but it didnt bother me, its like a weird gross comfy.
