From a practical standpoint I think they are good, but from a legal standpoint, you can't carry a fixed blade where I live so the folder in your pocket will do you more service than the fixed blade you left at home.

What I've noticed is that the people who say blades are bad for self defense (particularly on leddit) tend to take the following two lines of reasoning too far:
        A. A knife fight (read: a fight between two knife wielding individuals) is a no-win proposition that generally ends in both participants dead or gravely wounded. This can be expanded more generally to the notion that deploying a knife in a self-defense situation introduces the possibility that your knife will be turned against you.
        B. A knife is far inferior to a gun as a self-defense implement.

While these points are generally true, people extrapolate a lot of moronic shit from them and make blanket statements about how you should *never* use a knife for self-defense under *any* circumstances, to the extent that it will always do more harm than good. Like, the "loser dies in the streets, winner dies in the ambulance" line is repeated all the time as the slogan for why you shouldn't use a knife in self defense, but that's really only applicable to a knife-fight scenario (and hopefully you're not moronic enough to get into a knife fight in the first place), not so much as a backup weapon.

Similarly, although a gun is *obviously* superior to a knife as a self-defense implement and should always be favored over a knife, that doesn't preclude carrying a knife as a backup, or carrying a knife in situations where carrying a gun isn't feasible/legal. I think as a backup/weapon of last resort, a knife is perfectly sensible, particularly if it's something you already carry for utility. I'd rather have one than not have one. But, in the overwhelming majority of circumstances, you're better served with a gun or disengaging.

This literally only applies in anon's 1v5 unwinnable situation where you're going to lose no matter what and diffusing the situation before the physical altercation begins is the best action. And in the unwinnable situation you're at the mercy if the attackers and they might kill or maim you anyways even if you are unarmed, friendly and compliant.

Vigorous magdumping would have likely gotten him out of this situation, but there's no guarentee because it's an ambush anyway. Situational awareness is the best weapon, etc. I carry a fixed blade because it's another option that might make more sense if someone is on top of me or my other hand is occupied. It's also a knife and just a good tool. Everyone should carry a knife.

              Anonymous

Vigorous magdumping is ~5rnds per assailant, so we're talking 20rnds in the carry mag such as a G19 or similar capacity. You can reload, but 1v5 ambush is about as difficult a situation as you can be in.

          Pretty much this.

They're scared of getting stabbed. A few of them use the same arguments anti-gun people use against carrying firearms, like the attacker grabbing the knife and using it on the person carrying it.

He barely survived and lost several feet of intestine.

If he had a gun they would have shot him with it.

Maybe. The key difference is with a knife you have given yourself an edge (literally) in a hand-to-hand situation but you are fundamentally still in a hand-to-hand fight. It's also much harder to kill someone with a knife than most people realize, again as evidenced by the fact that he survived. A gun on the other hand potentially kills with each trigger pull, makes a LOT of noise, creates distance etc etc etc. There is plenty of CCTV footage of ambushes like we're discussing where the victim pulls a gun, gets a couple shots off, and the assailants scatter even if nobody gets hit. There's no way to say it would've gone differently for him if he'd had a gun instead of a knife but he sure carries a gun now.

          >It's also much harder to kill someone with a knife than most people realize
No point in killing your attacker with the knife, you want them to stop attacking you for whatever reason to include fear, pain, reduced limb function or incapacity.

Knives are for surprise attacks, not brandishing, suckerstabbig, if you will. I will suddenly stab balls without mercy in the event of being attacked.

        Anonymous

He didn't "brandish" the knife lol, he got punched in the side of the head, pulled his knife, got a couple swings in and was dogpiled. The entire thing was over in about 30 seconds.

For the record this is a guy I know through the MMA community. Much higher level of hand-to-hand experience than your average dumbass off the street, and it still didn't get him much.
If those couple knife swings he got in had been gunshots instead, he'd probably have killed at least one assailant and he sure as shit wouldn't need a colostomy bag.

I'm never sure if threads like this are thirdies or euros who can't get or carry a gun (likely in this case given OP's ESL grammar), underaged kids coping about not being able to get/carry a gun yet, poorgays who can't afford a gun, felons, or people from cuck states which makes them honorary thirdies/euros, or just guys who have never actually been in a real fight and think they're special action heroes.

It was 14 years ago lol, I don't even think it made the paper in my hometown. Also idk if you read much police blotter but usually these types of incidents simply say "man stabbed during fight," it's pretty rare to get much more detail than that unless you live in a state like Florida where reporters have open access to police reports.

He was smart, he stabbed at his opponent's vitals while the other nogger tried to slash him. Unless you have a dedicated cutting blade like a kukri, then always go for a stab, you have much higher chances of scoring a critical stab than a critical slash. The poor nig realized that stabbing was more effective after he was poked and tiried to go for a stab as well, but he realized it too late and went to the Great KFC in the Sky.

If you are a security guard for some business and the fight is not at your place of work (public street) you're not going to. If it is your place of business you're going to call for help and not get stabbed by both.

If you're a cop and your job is to literally stop these fights, you're going to call for backup rather than tase one and get stabbed by the other and then also stabbed by the one you tased.

Jumping into the middle of stupidity like a referee is not advisable.

I carry a fixed blade because any knives I've had with a joint like a switchblade or a butterfly knife inevitably become floppy. You can try to tighten them back up but it's just never as good. Also, I only carry it in case I need to cut something or an animal attacks, so simple is good. The best way to win a fight is to escape, so against a person I'd probably just whip it at eye level as a dustraction and accept having to buy another dinky little 3 inch kbar. Although, the other best way to win a fight is having enough situational awareness to not walk alone down buttfrick alley

Off-hand to compliment your pistol to provide defensive space to use such pistol is a pretty basic setup.

Overall if you have to use a knife, you also need to use your pistol and it is a dangerous situation to be in.
