Why don't people sleep in gigantic ziploc bags instead of tents?

Why don't people sleep in gigantic ziploc bags instead of tents? With a hole somewhere so it's not airtight of course

I've backpacked like 6 times with my $30 Walmart Ozark Trail tent. It weighs 2.2lbs and I'll buy another when my dumbass rips it

how are the tent poles holding up?
I bought a $35 tent off Amazon while backpacking in Hawaii, the tent poles almost immediately started corroding and getting filthy, the glue used to secure the ends of the poles together was very low quality

in my experience the most important difference between an expensive tent and a cheap tent is the quality of the tent poles. For freestanding tents of course.

Idk but when they break I'll pitch it up with my eBay trekking poles

BBBBBBBUT THE GLUE APPEARS TO BE OF LOW QUALITY, IS THERE A WAY I COULD EPOXY SOME FRICKING STICKS TOGETHER WHICH GLUE IS BEST GLUE? UMM OS THIS 5 STARS????

is it so wrong that when I buy a product I expect it to be good quality?

NTA but yes, it's wrong to count on anything. If you assume that everyone and everything will fail you eventually then you'll be better prepared to deal with it when it happens.

When you paid $35 for it? Yes. That's throw it way after a couple uses tent.

You can buy universal pole kits on Amazon for like $20. I’m not sure if it’s worth it for a $30 tent. They’re just tubes of aluminum with nesting ends, a length of shock cord, and end pieces. You cut them tubes to the size you need, fish the cord through, and tie off the ends.

You can literally buy tent poles on amazon to replace them. The better quality ones will probably be half what you paid for your tent tho.

My dad biked from KC to detroit in the 70s with a tube tent, which was basically a blue tarp taped into a tube. If you get some visqueen from the big hardware store, you can basically make the same thing, and it'll be one step away from what you're describing.

Not breathable. You'd wake up soaking wet.

I feel like tents are way too complex for what they actually do

Then get a tarp. I have the buget from YMG that just goes over my head too

I do that in a tent anyway because I pee myself.

Why do people live in wooden houses instead of old wooden crates?

    thats called a bivy

This. A bicycle is literally a plastic bag people claim they sleep in.

There was another thread where someone was suggesting you could put stocks in your boots inside the bag to keep it from sagging on your face. That is just how stupid and poor bivygays are. Instead of buying a tent that does everything better in every way they get a milsurp bivy that no one who didn’t literally have a gun pointed at his head by his CO would ever sleep in.

        >a bivy beat me up and took my lunch money when I was a child
I use my tents more often than my bivy and I still find your seething cringey

Did a bivy chad frick your girl? When I was in the military we used a twig to hold the bivy up instead of carrying the rod. The trick with the boots is only for bivys that lack the hoops for the rod. I will show you the trick once I get home from work on my MSS bivy, works pretty good and weighs nothing.
