Anyone else here think that this new "aesthetic" (dare I call it) looks soulless and flat out ugly? Also inb4

It is soulless, for robotic "people" who will never do anything beyond what they are told, mindless zombies whom much like the food, media, products and drugs they consume are entirely, completely, absolutely SOULLESS.

They ruined it by giving it the outline of a Star Wars prop. It looks like they asked a little kid to draw a gun and then based their design off of it.

Black is the most efficient paint and finish color because its cheap and sets quicker, but we dont live in 1908 anymore so theres no reason for a gun to be black outside of a specific aesthetic decision. Green and brown are the more prominent colors on land, so those are the best colors for firearms to be finished in. Brown edges out green because brown blends into green environments, but green stands out in brown environments. Therefore, brown or "FDE" is the most common non-black finish.

People have been putting aesthetic and soul into weapon designs for centuries. Just because it's a tool meant to kill people doesn't mean it can't look cool.

There is no reason you need to put so many holes in the handguard where it looks like a cheese grater. Also making everything in desert tan/brown/mud despite the fact nobody wants to keep doing bullshit nation building in the middle east is absolutely moronic.
The "suppressors on everything" trend is stupid for the vast majority of soldiers in a conventional war. Someone is going to scream at me about hearing loss but in this day and age you should have good hearing protection anyway. Even if you have a suppressor your hearing can still get fricked by artillery going off and all sorts of other things in a war zone. Suppressors on everything has become some weird cargo cult thing where everyone wants to LARP as special forces playing in the woods. I've even seen suppressors on some guns mounted on UGVs like it's going to somehow make the fricking robot avoid being detected.
The XM7 is the result of a mix of contradictory and often stupid requirements but somehow it is less of an offender than that abortion of a light machine gun at the bottom. It has cooling rings like a Hotchkiss? It also manages to be heavier than both the SIG and GD .338 GPMGs. And calling it a "Automatic Precision Rifle"? WTF?

Suppressors are mostly for obscuring your location when firing not hearing safety especially on a supersonic round

In a real war that's not going to make any difference unless you're one of those special forces types fricking around behind enemy lines, a prospect which is going to be very difficult until better ways of killing all these homosexual small drones are invented.

      >Also making everything in desert tan/brown/mud d
Brown is much better camo color than black for any terrain. That includes CONUS and Russia.

      >The "suppressors on everything" trend is stupid for the vast majority of soldiers in a conventional war
Supreessors are even larger force multipliers than optics in conventional war. Though they are expensive both in costs and logistics.
Supreessors hide shotter, obscure source and direction of danger making enemy seek cover in wrong direction, preserve hearing for CQB so soldiers can hear enemy footsteps, and last but not least they make noobie shooters flinch less (hello conscription meat).

        Anonymous

In a conventional war, which is what the NGSW was deliberately designed to have in mind, suppressors will end up being useless for masking locations of fire. I find it hard to believe it's anything but a retroactive design decision. If that were the case, we would have been fielding suppressor as standard issue since 2000, but as you already know it was only for SOPMOD, which grunts were NOT getting.
        >making enemy seek cover in wrong direction
this already happens without suppressors to begin with
        >preserve hearing for CQB so soldiers can hear enemy footsteps
lol? this has already been possible since the implement of electronic ear pro being issued. I'd like to add, real life isn't the MW2 days when having a turtle beach headset made you MVP. Once things go south in this "le cqb" fantasy, the ability to "hear enemy footsteps" is the least of your concerns

          >this already happens without suppressors to begin with
And it would happens much more with suppressors. Also suppressors greatly reduce muzzle blast and visual aspects of fire (dust kicking, brushes moving etc)

      >The "suppressors on everything" trend is stupid for the vast majority of soldiers in a conventional war.
The USMC company that was issued suppressors for literally every weapon in their TO&E absolutely did not want to give them up, not at least because it meant a platoon could communicate via shouting instead of needing to use radios every two seconds. It also made fighting inside buildings a jillion times less painful, minimized report and muzzle flash, and gave a whole bunch of other benefits. In short, field testing proves you're dead wrong.

Are these those morons suppressing M2 Brownings like it's going to accomplish anything other than give the MG team another 5 pounds per barrel to carry? Does the USMC not issue good electronic h hearing protection or something?

There is literally no reasons these designs have to be so hideous. M-LOK was supposed to improve things from quad rails but instead people have managed to do worse things with it.
WTF?

          >The "suppressors on everything" trend is stupid

Because rails are good, weight is bad, and extruded aluminum is the new stamped steel.

The minimal amount of weight you save by cutting too-many holes in the handguard isn't worth the downsides.

There are no downsides with a properly designed rail. (ie not geissele)

If it were properly designed it would have some holes and cutouts but not by this skeletonized crap they're trying to sell.

You can see it on the insistence they *need* DMR performance out of a standard issue rifle.

    >overly skeletonized quad rails
If you make your new standard issue rifle weigh more and be front heavier than a 1960s battle rifle, you'll take any weight savings you can.

There is no rail other than the top, to meet weight requirement as real quad rail are blocks of aluminum.
Tan because sand war live rent free in middle management, the same type of country featuring large open space for these long range guns and the same for the proving ground. In their mind, live could have been better if the guns are colored yellow, not because they cannot keep and modify their rifles as if they own it.

Recoil operation vs having to fit a gas piston into the receiver.

I actually love the obsession with FDE the MIC has had over the past decade, but that's probably because of my fetish for the SCAR. Not a fan of skeletonized rails and systems like M-LOK. I know why they exist and they have advatanges, but I just love the way RIS quad rails look.

  31. 3 months ago
    Anonymous

There's nothing wrong with "skeletonizing" a part as long as you have an engineer make sure it can maintain structural-integrity during hard use, which im pretty sure multi-billionaire companies are doing.

I do agree about FDE though, the color of your weapons should match the environment and every company has started treating FDE as a "universal color" when it isnt. There should be more grey-green firearms and firearm accessories like ranger green. I like OD but its a little too dark for most of the world, whereas the greyish nature of ranger green makes it fit in a lot more places

Because green and tan blends in better with common camouflage and environments. Black is only harder to spot at night and even then green/tan will blend in well enough.
The skeletonized (MLOK) rails are so you can choose where on the rifle to place segments of rails instead of the older design of a full length, cheese grater quad rail along the entire barrel shroud. This reduces weight, provides greater comfort to the user, and allows the user to still precisely customize where they want their kit to be mounted.

    Ok, here's the deal.
In Iraq/afganistan they noticed that black guns in desert get very, very hot. So hot they are hard to hold.
But they also noticed something else: When left in the sun, black guns also heat differentially on one side than the other. The side towards the sun heats up a lot, but the side in shade of the gun does not. This causes differential heat expansion to the metal, and affects accuracy on longer ranges.

Painting the gun tan will solve this problem. lighter color will reflect the light away from the gun, and allows much more uniform heating of metal.
So what started as camo painting was also found out to have a function of keeping the metal from heating too much.

That's why the tan color has become a sort of go-to color for guns. it controls metal heating.

We spent 20 years fighting goat frickers in a desert. Some SF dudes started rattle canning their weapons brown and it became the "in thing".
I like it more than black just because for a very, VERY long time everything was black. Or 1980's woodland BDU green. It's bright, attracts the eye, and a bright finish makes it easier to see if some numbnuts operator ignored his endmills screaming for their lives.
Sometimes I hate the fact that I can see tiny imperfections, I bought a billet lower AR and the first fricking thing I saw was a tiny mismatch that someone didn't catch and blend.
