I used to pre-2020 because I believed we would have collapsed by now and the better off everyone was prepared, the smoother the collapse would go and the quicker we come out the other side. Collapse is a chance to rebuild and throw out a century's worth of mistakes and rot on which current society now sits. Anyway, now I see that short of nuclear war or civil war here at home, it's going to be the long slow grind, still a collapse, but a managed one in which people eat ze bugs and live in ze pod. But it's coming so you might as well get ready now. It's not enough to have some shelf stable foods in a basement. Most of your veggies or commercially processed stuff like boyardee and crap like that are fine well past a decade beyond their best by date. I have been doing this since 2012 and haven't noticed much drop off as I rotate through my canned storage. But yes, by all means all store dry bulk goods and get a freeze dryer. Commercial canned food is cheap and convenient for what it is and beats buying most of the "emergency food" they sell in the preparedness industry cost wise for the trade off of shelf life- but it's still much longer than people think for most canned foods and that's the secret. Keep the cans 50% humidity or less, keep them under 70 ideally and they're gonna be fine.

I used to pre-2020 because I believed we would have collapsed by now and the better off everyone was prepared, the smoother the collapse would go and the quicker we come out the other side. Collapse is a chance to rebuild and throw out a century's worth of mistakes and rot on which current society now sits. Anyway, now I see that short of nuclear war or civil war here at home, it's going to be the long slow grind, still a collapse, but a managed one in which people eat ze bugs and live in ze pod. Either way, things don't get better until they fully break down. I doubt everyone will unanimously agree when that moment is, even if in hindsight we were in the middle of it. But it's coming so you might as well get ready now. It's not enough to have some shelf stable foods in a basement. You better be on acreage away from cities with alternative energy sources and the ability to grow food and irrigate crops, and the means and the people to help you defend it. The future in the USA looks like South Africa.

Fruit is the one thing that doesn't keep because of acidity. Most of your veggies or commercially processed stuff like boyardee and crap like that are fine well past a decade beyond their best by date. I have been doing this since 2012 and haven't noticed much drop off as I rotate through my canned storage. But yes, by all means all store dry bulk goods and get a freeze dryer. Commercial canned food is cheap and convenient for what it is and beats buying most of the "emergency food" they sell in the preparedness industry cost wise for the trade off of shelf life- but it's still much longer than people think for most canned foods and that's the secret. Keep the cans 50% humidity or less, keep them under 70 ideally and they're gonna be fine.
