Since in this fantasy the United States wants to annex the territory, atomic bombs are ruled out, because it doesn't make much sense to conquer a territory that is a radioactive wasteland.
Given the sheer size of the territory, sabotaging infrastructure or ambushing convoys would be quite common, not to mention scorched earth tactics.
Nor should the arrival of volunteers, military advisers and weapons from other countries sympathetic to the "Mexican" cause be ruled out. Something that also plays against the United States

If a Civil War happens, it'll probably play out more like the trucker's strike, where the right cuts off the major cities in every way they have available. Roads being blocked, trucks getting mysteriously "looted", farms refusing to sell to distributors, and absolutely anything else they can do to send the cities into crisis. The blue citizens won't really have any way to fight back, outside of trying to get rid of the roadblocks.
