Yes. For concripts whose life expectancy is measured in minutes and more expensive weapons would just be a waste.

MAS 36 is a superior "dirt cheap conscript rifle." Mosins aren't even particularly simple.

for the soviets, not superior enough to justify retooling all of your production lines and especially not when you're gearing up for semi-autos at the time that the Mas 36 was rolling out

guns were already mostly irrelevant in war when they were created, war is about advancing until you take fire and then shell the hell out of where the fire is coming from or call in airstrikes until it is destroyed then advance until you take fire again. The soldiers only need something for courage purposes

…this is why the infantry guys don’t invite you the barrel polishing parties.

It wasn't that far behind other contemperary rifles. The improvement was being replaced by a different weapon altogether, which is exactly what everyone else did. Shot side-by-side with a Mauser, Enfield, and Carcano, I can say the advantages the other two present aren't enough to warrant modifying the mosin beyond where it already was.

The finnish literally did. To the point that they are on par with every other bolt action.

in what way did they improve it, let alone to be on par?

        >High quality barrel
        >Free floated
        >best sights of any bolt action in the war
        >Better triggers
        >Better stocks
Let me guess, you need more?

    >Why didn't they ever improve on this pile of fricking shit?
Everyone is trying to tell why they didn't when the answer is that they absolutely did. They tried to replace it with the SVT-40 self loading rifle but the war broke out so they halted the switch, they then dropped the Mosin for SKS and AK-47 ASAP. If you are wondering why they didn't try to do it sooner, they were busy with all the post-WW1 turmoil and consolidating of power, they started their program to replace it in 1930 and after a false start with the AVS-36 they settled on the SVT in 38. Fact is the Soviets new it was service far longer then it should have been.

Because they started making them in 1891. The rifle was pretty good by 1891 standards, stripper clip loading still isn't universal. It's reliable, safe, and uses smokeless powder. Those are all things we take for granted, but in 1891, that makes it relatively cutting edge.

Just look at other major players. German 1888 kinda sucked in its own ways, it'd be a while yet until the Gewehr 98 'perfects' the Mauser. Even the Spanish and Swedish Mausers aren't a thing yet. The brits are still using a black powder bolt action and will for several more years. Even when they adopt a smokeless rifle it still doesn't use clips yet. At this point the US hasn't even adopted the Krag and is using single shot black powder rifles. Most of the world is in fact. France adopted the first smokeless rifle and it's even worse, you have the Lebel and Berthier in this timeframe and both suck worse than the Mosin. The Mannlicher M1888 is kinda smokeless, which means it sucks. The Carcano exists, it's probably around as good and bad as the Mosin in many ways. The OG Schmidt Rubin rifle seems awesome on paper but the thing is designed for paper patched bullets, what is this nonsense?

I mean really the only rifle out there that I'd say were substantially better would be the 1889 Mauser, which still is far from as good as the Mauser would get.

The problem is Russia is a shithole nation and always has been, so they couldn't course correct once they made frickloads of these things. And then they made things worse by buying a tons of moronic but cool leverguns for their cossacks. And then the whole pile of bricks got kicked over by the communists and things got even worse. Even then the rifle was still suitable unlike most of the other crap early smokeless rifles, so Russia committed to the sane option when they could and started building semi-autos...then had them captured by the hundreds of thousands by the Germans.

Russroaches are perpetual poorgays who can't afford to replace all their stuff so they just keep patching updates on to whatever they have at the moment. A crappy gun is better than no gun at all.

Eh the bolt needs some work but thats about it. If you want you can fix the magazine too so loading stripper clips are easier. It will still shoot straight up to 500m
