Why did big cats not become a thing in warfare? They have pretty keen sense of smell and are more brutal when attacking.

Why do we still use dogs as our primary animal soldiers?

Dogs are social animals, they are easy to train because they naturally want to serve the Alpha of the pack. Cats are generally solitary hunters, there's no social structure to take advantage of to train them.

I never got this as there are plenty of pack big cats. Lions are the most prominent but there has been sighting of even Cheetahs starting to use pack tactics to improve hunting rates. So really you should be able to train any of them with selective breeding.

They are the exception rather than the rule, and lions (for example) have a lot less complex social structure compared to dogs/wolves.

Why train a difficult species when you can train a more adaptable one

Lions live in a social pack structure.
Cats just don't take any bullshit from anybody and doesn't afraid of anything.

        >no, but yes
        Kys

the 'alpha' thing is bullshit that was debunked by the same person who made the theory, it only shows up in wolves in captivity.

Lions live in groups of related females. Males sort of hang around the edges of the territory of a group of a female family group. This is very different than a wolf pack.

it's actually the cat's hunting drive that gets in the way of their use in combat. a dog can be ordered to attack and will do so until ordered to do otherwise. a large cat can also be ordered to attack, however they won't stop attacking when the order is given.

The Arabs had trained cheetahs for hunting. That’s as close as you’re going to get.

It's not just trainability, logistics plays a part. Large cats have small litters and take several years to reach sexual maturity. Dogs have nearly twice the amount of puppies as a tiger does cubs, and reach sexual maturity at around 14-15 months. You can have a massive pack of attack dogs, or like 2-3 battle ready tigers. Both die with one spear to the goo. On a macro scale, which do you think is more effective? The best strategy in war is almost always to spam the cheapest unit that still meets the minimum level of effectiveness to not be total shit.

bigass cats can frenzy alot easier than dogs can, an injured dog in extreme pain may bite you if you get close but a cat in extreme pain will likely charge at you and try to take a chunk out of you.

cat didn't become domesticated relatively late, compare to dog which were likely the first domesticated animal ever.
by the time cat had become pets, dogs had already been molded and breed to human's need and there were relatively little need (or time) to do the same to cat.

It's totally possible. Some modern house cats have been bred to be moronic and overly affectionate just like dogs. I really believe that with selective breeding and time you can generate any kind of animal slave you want.

Cats really only form human relationships out of convenience. It's far harder to train them to do anything useful because they will just refuse commands they don't feel like obeying. Dogs also tend to more readily understand and respond to human body language and verbal cues.

air dropping big cats into urban warfare environments to demoralize the enemy and prompt civ evacuation and reduce ability of enemy to lay low is the only tatic that could work with big cats.

First take out power so there are no lights, and airdrop at night. have parachute detach 20 feet above ground so the cat can leap free of lines.

They are just murder kittens, they don't get trained for shit.
