The USA has a history of putting a lot of resources in entertaining the forces in war and allowed a lot of stuff officially or unofficially.

Getting very close to "we make shit suck on purpose cause it makes you big tough" territory that turdies love. Isn't that one of the reasons why enlistment in the US is dropping? All the tedious, pointless bullshit COs make folks do to "make 'em tough" and "we uphold tradition"? Y'know, stuff they don't have to put up with when they get a normal 9 to 5 for similar pay?

          Anonymous

          >Similar pay
Try significantly better pay. Even with like 8 years experience as an E6 you're making a whole 48k a year according to the army itself. Most people are probably gonna leave as an E3 or E4 after 4 years, so they'll be making 30k-34k a year by then. Whereas I can spend 2 months getting a certification and get a job paying 50k a year or like all my friends who went to college for a few years and are walking out at like 80k a year or more. Basically the military doesn't have much going for it besides the prestige of service (Which is, granted, a good reward in of itself)

            Anonymous

To be fair the military does also come with pretty decent benefits during and after service and some ways to save costs so I'm not sure it's a comparable 34k. Still pretty terrible though.

            Anonymous

You are saving significantly on free rent and health insurance vs having to pay for them yourself, even if the modern barracks have a 50/50 chance of being a death trap, or even better, BHA if you're married or they're out of barracks slots. GI bill also is a good chunk of money, though it's not direct cash during service. A 4 year commitment is honestly a pretty decent deal to get paid to go to college after, and while base pay does suck for enlisted, you can see some jobs getting very big retention bonuses to make up for this since it's the only area where the military can be discretionary in their pay. You can then also walk away with a decent disability rating by just documenting shit while you're in, and a vet gets massive priority for federal hiring. Overall, the military isn't a bad deal if you're looking at the total value provided and not just the take home cash at the end of each month, especially if you're gonna do 4 and out for the benefits or stick around for 20 for the pension. Any number in between, plus or minus the difference on the contract length for your MOS, is the only real losing move.

The delightful retirement package arrives quickly.
Few other jobs cover disability nearly as well. 20 years is done in a flash and even with a few more for the pay bump is not hard unless you're profoundly stupid or unlucky.

While active there are more benefits than just base pay. Free medical, food and shelter are on top of base pay. BAH helped pay off my mortgage for 14 years.

            t.retiree

My Post Office and cop school peers also did nicely but had to work much longer to vest. If you can become a cop in the right location you can stack money without being eaten by Wakandans.

Political bullshit aside, it's been a point of contention for a century vis-a-vis European way of doing things. But you at least have to pay competitive rates for Officer types (that aren't infiltrators or wetrags) coming in with college degrees or skilled labor MOS. There'll always be new meat morons, but there has to be people capable of leading and tard wrangling them.

Ukraine is a good example of how once shit hits the fan all the fat gets trimmed real fast. They weren't the horde of undisciplined criminals that /misc/troons claim but they definitely weren't all above board either, corruption is seemingly inherent to the Slav lifestyle.
Ironically, the war in Ukraine will probably end up being a good thing for them in the end since it means they HAD to stop all the old Soviet-esque "backscratching" corruption and embezzlement simply to survive, and after the war ends and rebuilding efforts start there will be enough cash flowing around that greedy fricks will have an easier time doing things "right" than risking being c**ts.
Plus when The Kingdom of Monke is reduced to a very big graveyard that will remove one of the biggest sources of corruption- Russians.

But passing a law thar they'd used armed forces on an allied nation if for some reason someone of theirs got charged by the ICC for war crimes and was then stupid enough to leave the US isn't an issue.
To those with power the law is a tool not a restriction.

lets be real here. the budget is limited and you try to buy as cheap as possible. then there is also local politicians demanding the base has to "support local businesses" which means you are now forced to rotate buying from 4 different bakeries who obviously form a cartel to abuse the situation and demand outrageous prices for their air filled rolls and basically your military base now acts as a hidden subsidy for local food businesses and farms.

The usa has started expecting unsatisfying and unrealistic behavior from males, and they can just take it further with military and prisoners because they are not free men but owned by the state.

Stuff like no drinking, restricting pornography or smoking.
They are basicly children with rules made by mommy.
Back in ww2 days men were expected to get into some fights, have porn, chain smoke, and catch diseases from prostitutes in every port.
The military is the only place infidelity is actualy a crime. So while thier wives screw other men when they are deployed the military is ready to punish them if they get caught being an old fashioned soldier.

    But what do you expect?
They are not expected to keep a budget either and get a housing allowance on top of pay.
Being treated like children is why so many are still like a teenager when they get out and have an even harder time adjusting to civilian life.
No different than someone in prison for years. Big children because they have been treated like such.

K related the military is also more anti weapon than civilian life. Knives are banned in many barracks, and personal firearms are kept by the armorer on many bases. A civilian is better armed than most military until they are outside the wire.
Not trusted with weapons. And you know what, they live up to those expectations and stab eachother in barracks and cant be trusted with a firearm until the moment an enemy poses such a threat that it warrants arming them for the hours they are expected to face them. Before promptly being disarmed again.

DOT Federal Highway Administration, as of May 31st, 2022, men drive an average of 16,550 miles per year, whereas for women the average is 10,142 miles.
The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute says there are 104.3 million men in the US with a drivers license, compared to 105.7 million women. More recent stats put those numbers closer to 115 million men and 117 million women.

                > The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that men cause on average 6.1 million accidents annually compared to the 4.4 million caused by women annually
So men cause 1 accident for every 312,000 miles driven on average, and at current rates a male driver would be expected to cause an accident once for every 18.85 years of driving.
Women cause 1 accident for every 269,700 miles driven on average, and at current rates a female driver would be expected to cause an accident once for every 26.59 years of driving.

If women in the United States drove as much as men, and the accident rate were maintained, then female drivers would be expected to cause an accident once for every 16.29 years of driving, bringing that 4.4 million annual accidents caused by women to over 7.18 million.
If men and women drove equally, and the NHTSA's 10.5 million at-fault accidents per year were maintained, women would cause roughly 5.8 million of those accidents, whereas men would cause around 4.7 million.

                [...]
More men drive than women and men drive more than women. Totals mean nothing, you have to use per capita per mile data. I know your kind doesn't understand what per capita means but the rest of us aren't sub 80 IQ.

Women still cause more fatal accidents per mile per capita. Again, there are fewer women drivers and those women drive less than men. The "men cause big accidents women cause fender benders" meme is Big Lie cope.

The Germans have been unable to keep their tiny fleet of six budget submarines in a ready condition to the point of failing to meet their NATO commitments. There's signs that's getting better now Russia is actually acting aggressively and more money is being invested but honestly the German government is mostly just ignoring the war and hoping it'll go back to the status quo of cheap Russian gas.

Despite having literally only six subs there was a point in 2017 when all six were out of service due to maintenance backlogs. The Bundeswehr is a joke.

Right wingers trying to force their way into the military and frick with it so it's their little guaranteed employment safe space is bad for the nation as a whole and it needs to be mercilessly punished whenever it pops up.

US nuclear attack subs have supplies stored for 90 days which basically means the storage is more limited on a US sub than on the U 212A which are designed for 30 days operations.

No, eating on a US sub is like going to a good dinner every meal. Squids get fat as frick on the subs. Squids eat better while underway than when home eating home cooked meals. Generally speaking, the US Navy eats really good food. That is why everyone makes fun of the fatsos. They probably have an emotional breakdown if they miss Ice-cream and/ or other dessert.

They could replace those with industrial airfryers, and use operational safety/logistical benefits as reasons. Large amounts of hot oil are hazardous in enclosed spaces, and having to store all the required volume of frying oil is inefficient.
The crew still get their fried food, but it's both healthier and simpler to produce.

US Navy is not allowed to have alcohol on ships/ subs, other than medical. Some old timers said downed pilots recovered sometimes used to get a shot of whiskey for "medical reasons". It has been a regulation for about 100 years. If a ship is at sea for 90 days (or whatever) without a port call, then the crew can have 2 beers if the Secretary of the Navy allows it. If I remember correctly, even 18 year olds can get the beers, if outside the USA. US military service members can buy booze on a port call and bring it back to the USA, but it must be locked away on ship.
A crew does not need booze to do the job. The USA is not like euros feeding kids booze at the age of 12. The USA also never enslaved (pressed into service) nor practiced floggings, like the Limeys.
In other words, different countries and different rules.

Reminds me of when I learned a large portion of the best sailors of the British Empire were Irish, and a lot of Irish joined up to escape thier homeland that had been enslaved and starved by the English.
While in Ireland most land was English owned and most food for export, and Irish had to rent from English landlords, and got sent to prison or a penal colony or likely pressed into the Navy for stealing some food because food in their homeland was mostly foriegn owned and for export and they were permanently poor by design.
Then it was even worse when I learned Irish were once much larger people than the English, as recorded by the English, until hundreds of years of starvation after conquest had altered them geneticly into smaller people.

In fact, I'm pretty sure nip submariners eat pretty meh meals, since nip subs are cramped as frick. They have very high complements for their size, so it's quite likely they eat rations (or mostly canned food), and only the rice is freshly-made from bulk bags. I don't see how they could feed all that crew otherwise, there's simply not enough space in the galley for a entire shift's worth of food.

Always a question of endurance. German subs carry food for up to 30 days (which would also impact stuff seen in the OP) while US nuclear subs carry food for up to 90 days.

Wouldn't be surprised if Japanese subs even carry less supplies than the German subs

          >Wouldn't be surprised if Japanese subs even carry less supplies than the German subs
I don't think that's operationally feasible. There's a limit to how much you can shorten a patrol, given that there are fixed time expeditures related to travel (getting to the patrol area, leaving the patrol area). Cutting time on station doesn't reduce those times. And the crew still needs to eat during those underway segments as well.

            Anonymous

In the Australia bid the lower endurance of the Souryuu class compared to their competition was one of the main reasons why the design wasn't picked.

Japanese subs are already on patrol once they leave the port.

Also if someone mentions that time a RN sailor drank 21 pints and fired at his commanding officer with an L85 in full auto that wasn't from the beer ration but from going ashore to a pub. They are smart enough to stop sailors from hoarding undrunk beer.
