I've seen another case almost exactly like this down in Florida. Neighbors kept antagonizing a very obviously unstable, PTSD riddled vet and he finally snapped and killed 2 of them when they started shooting fireworks at his house one night.
You'd be surprised how much certain people won't back down even when someone is showing signs of mental illness or craziness. Before I got help for my issues I strongly considered shooting my neighbor as he went out to his car, then blast his family away, and finally burn his house down. I had already aimed a gun at him multiple times through my windows without his knowledge. This was all over him using my property and leaving things on it. He never realized how close I was to at least trying to take everything from him. Seriously though I eventually got mental help and moved away. Point is I showed many signs of unstableness doesn't mean they cared or thought I may try to kill them.

I've seen another case almost exactly like this down in Florida. Neighbors kept antagonizing a very obviously unstable, PTSD riddled vet and he finally snapped and killed 2 of them when they started shooting fireworks at his house one night.
You'd be surprised how much certain people won't back down even when someone is showing signs of mental illness or craziness. Before I got help for my issues I strongly considered shooting my neighbor as he went out to his car, then blast his family away, and finally burn his house down. I had already aimed a gun at him multiple times through my windows without his knowledge. This was all over him using my property and leaving things on it. He never realized how close I was to at least trying to take everything from him. Seriously though I eventually got mental help and moved away. Point is I showed many signs of unstableness doesn't mean they cared or thought I may try to kill them.

According to the jury no. A valid self defence claim requires the defendant have a reasonable fear for their life. The standard for "a reasonable fear" is determined by "a reasonable person in similiar circumstances". This person doesn't actually exist but in practice allows the jury to substitute their judgement for that of the accused.
The jury decided that a reasonable person in similiar circumstances would NOT fear for their life when the Bat Man was merely holding the bat, but WOULD fear for their life when the bat was thrown.
