FAL doesn't look cooler, especially when you're comparing it to a G3 with the wide handguard or HK wood. G3 also looks a lot better when scoped. Also, pretty much whatever conflict FAL was in, G3 was in it, too, except for maybe Falklands War.
I can think of maybe a couple others, tho they're pretty marginal

That’s literally because the G3 is like half the price a of FAL since the G3 is uses a stamped receiver. They stamped out millions of more G3’s than FAL’s that were milled out. Thats why you still see G3’s everywhere still.

As far as I've been able to find they only made a handful back in the 70s and it never went any farther. I'm not sure why either. Common speculation is that they wanted to pick up magazines and ammo from the Soviet supplied forces they were fighting with, just like those failed attempts to make an M16 that took AK mags back in the early 2000s.
That'd make a lot of sense. Could it also have been used for export/supplying rebel groups where ak mags and ammo were common?
On a related note, do you have any info about the hk32, a g3 in 7.76x39? Some types using ak mags. I tried to look into it, but couldn't find much other than a Finnish army trial and apparently a Tanzanian contract.

Here's a 3d printed jig I made that holds the rear sight perfectly in place while you weld it
I also designed my own bend jig and forming mandrel
Btw I converted a hk91 bolt to 5.56, I cut it down and tig welded it back together
There's pistol carbine and rifle length systems for the g3 just like there is for the AR, and they can be swapped around when building your gun

It is commonly used in job shops to make custom brake tooling quickly. laser it out, bolt together and you're ready to go. If making a ton of parts you can wrap stainless sheet around it and tack it on and it lasts forever. If you actually came up with the idea independently then I gotta hand it to you well done.

This is not due to any real fault with the rifle. FN were turbo israelites with licensing of receivers/forgings so much so that basically the only nations outside of Belgium who made receivers were like Brazil and Argentina (both of whom only got that right once FN was winding down their production. Where HK went the exact opposite route of not only giving out licensing, but also help set up factories in the country which is highly appealing offer since it makes you somewhat sanction proof and also get some national pride out of the deal. There is a reason why Turkey (until extremely recently), Greece, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan all still make the G3. They are either too poor to swap, or can't find another rifle with such loose rights like the G3 had.

FAL fell out of favor with militaries and in the civilian market. G3 is still issued by a lot of third world countries. I've handled both, the FAL felt rickety and the sights sucked. The G3 was extremely solid and has the best sights ever imo (HK drums). Also looks cooler imo, something about the green on gray gives me an aesthetic boner.
Get one while you can because soon we'll be the boomers with guns that are no longer manufactured. Then we can lol at zoomers who can't get a PTR91, which is probably the best G3 ever made since they made significant improvements to the trigger.

I've seen 9mm FAL conversions before. A company used to make the kit and sell it in Shotgun News. I don't imagine there was much demand for them though.

Fals aren’t that hard if you go metric everything and have a vice in your garage, you’ll need a set of round gauges to measure the locking pin size but other than it’s watch a few builders on Youtube and maybe read a couple guides.

I got both. I can confidently say the FAL is the better rifle. The g3 is cool but I wouldn't use it for anything outside of a pseudo PSG-1.
Fals only downside is iron sights and finding quality mags (I got a frick ton) besides that they're solid. I do wish Inch fals got more support bc imo they're the superior magazine design.
G3 reliable but you cannot reload spent brass which fricking sucks objectively.
Fal has more modularity.
G3 is more accurate at longer distances but fal is still an accurate rifle.
Fal has an adjustable gas system which means it can eat any ammo in any weather.
Field striping a fal is stupid easy, G3 not so much.
G3 has wayyyy more recoil compared to the smooth shooter fal.

Nice, Ive always wanted both. Im currently waiting on a PTR91. Is it true about the brass? Ive heard that it may chew up some but not all, leaving at least a certain amount still reloadable. Could it just be luck of the draw or is there something adjustable like the extractor that could not chew them up? Either way Im ok with it just eating garbage, or having at least some brass salvagable.
Install a weld on brass deflector and it'll protect your brass
But it will still have deep grooves from the porting regardless of the denting issue

lolwut just because you only need to push a lever for the fal doesnt make removing 2 pins difficult anon. Also you can reload g3 brass as long as yours doesnt frick up the neck. flute markings on the brass dont effect durability unless you plan on reloading the same brass multiple times
You've worked on G3s to know you can't open up the roller without cuts. You're correct on the 2 pins being simple but to ignore the rolling elephant in the room whereas the FAL has full takedown is revealing to your German bias (I jest)

Besides, my dad was an FAL armorer and he hated the things. Wore out quickly, needed locking components replaced and handguards were a consumable in army service. I cannot recall the Bundeswehr or any other army wearing out furniture parts at such a rate.

Since I’m the only person here who owns real F/A examples of both, I’ll give you my unwanted opinion.
FAL has nicer balance, slimmer ergonomics, has a nicer recoil impulse, but is dogshit for mounting optics (no, your DSA peasant rail is not a good solution) and mags are more expensive.
G3 has better ergonomics for tall strong morons like me, but I find the LOP too short. Recoil is a bit worse. Roller-delay system is VICIOUSLY dirty. Five rounds and you vomit a ridiculous amount of carbon all inside the receiver. The aluminum mags are still cheap and crazy light. Better for optics, better overall for modernizing or tweaking to fit your taste. Better sights.
I think the G3 is the better gun overall, but I enjoy shooting the FAL more.
