Where can I buy a single hex bit?

I broke a 3/32” hex bit that came with my Craftsman screwdriver bit set. On EBay to get just that bit I broke would be $7 with shipping! My local hardware store doesn’t sell isolated hex bits. I live in the USA in New Jersey.

Where can I buy just the single bit that I broke?

Aliexpress will have an entire set for $1 including shipping. Might be cheese grade though.

Maybe look around more? you live in a highly populated area in the us dude, there are probably tons of different hardware stores around you.

And a single bit is always going to be more expensive than a bit included in a full kit, so seven bucks doesn't seem that huge, especially if it's good quality.

I have an entire metal box full of loose bits that I have acquired over the years. Every single junk pickup that I buy has a shitload of screw bits of every known shape and size and sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, crescent wrenches, etc. I can't believe how many people don't clean out their vehicles before selling them. I've even scored a 24" Ridgid pipe wrench and a few high-lift jacks...

My almost stepdad used to have an auto repair shop, sold a few used cars and he did police impound. Before he died I would have just asked him and he likely would have had extras from people who left them behind in the used cars he sold or those who didn't claim their police impounds.

Time to start your own box of extra bits anon... You can't depend on other people to always do stuff for you... Auctions, yard sales, flea markets are all good places to pick up incomplete bit sets for dirt cheap...

Opie honestly just grab a new set that includes it for <$10 so you can replace the next one ya lose. And they’re nice to have for hammering into fricked fasteners

Anyway I found 3x 5/32 in my junk box but not a single 3/32, so I’m of no use.

This is how all huge sets of bits look after three uses.

The wise choice when one breaks such things is buy a pack because otherwise every future broken bit requires more money to replace and waiting delays whatever one was doing. Bits are consumable and disposable like the hardware they drive. I don't buy asswipe by the sheet either.

Scoring Hi-Lifts is pretty sweet. Well done!

I’d rather not wind up with a bunch of screwdriver bit sets with a few missing bits here and there.

You’d figure there would be a company or store that would cater to this moderately large market niche of the need to replace lost or broken bits, sockets, etc.

No one is that stupid. Stop trolling.

Did you go to a real hardware store? AKA not Home Depot or Lowes? Ace or Parkrose should have single bits, and probably any non-chain places too.

      Anonymous

Huh? I don’t know how tiny Ace is a real hardware store while Home Depot isn’t…

I went to my local hardware store:

And they didn’t have any single hex bit except for security hex bits. I’ve asked at Harbor Freight also.

        Bepis

Harbor freight is the worst, they don’t have any individual stuff.

I would guess either Lowe’s or Ace would be the best bet because Lowe’s has drawers full of loose sockets and shit, but I’m not sure about 1/4” bits. And Ace has a whole aisle full of random hardware drawers so there’s a possibility they have driver bits in one of those drawers.

But I wouldn’t waste much time considering picrel is like $9 at Harbor Freight and Advance Auto.

There’s no money for them to stock a ton of loose 50¢ bits when they can sell you a big assorted pack for $10. A while back I was trying to complete some random socket rails and if I needed more than 2 or 3 sockets, it was cheaper to buy the whole set. So that’s what I did, and the duplicate sockets went into the junk bag that I pull out when I want to hammer them onto a fricked fastener or something.

Live without the 3/32 hex bit in your multi-driver thing then. It’s such an odd frickin size.

I'd get a set of allen wrenches instead. It'll be more likely to bend instead of break like those bits.

I think it’s OP’s autism and wanting to have a complete set of bits for his screwdriver.

For openers ditch the impact and just get a drill. Second, go to the dollar store and buy a set of allen wrenches, cut off the L part and chuck the shank in said drill.
They’re all made of pretty much the same metal, even the dollar store ones.
When these stupid motherfrickers round over after a single use (as they all do, even my proto set)
You just cut off ⅛" of the rounded end and continue on with your job instead of wringing your hands over a missing, disposable, hex bit.

Medium size packs of screws often come with the bit to drive them in. Alternatively, most hardware stores will stock replacement bits in a pack of 10 or whatever. These bits are considered consumable, especially when used with an impact driver. They do make impact driver bits that last a lot longer with such use, but even those wear down over time and need replacing.

      Anonymous

The bit I showed a pic of and the one I need a replacement for is a regular screwdriver bit, not a drill bit or impact bit.

I walk out with a new 10 or 15-pack of bits in my pocket every time I stop by Home Depot. these corporate rats are stealing from me every chance they get and those suits at the top would murder me for $20. might as well take a little back.

                I forgot about that stuff.
Yes, I agree with the lethal does guy, but also only make carfentanil the only thing available.
Most problems in society will evaporate like puffs of smoke.

If it was the only thing available and people were getting gov’t supplied stuff at a known concentration, ODs might not be as much of an issue.

The problem with fentanyl is that it’s not sold pure 100%, the drug dealers cut it to make a bag that’s about the size of a $10 bag of heroin that the junkies are used to but only maybe 2% to 5% fentanyl or whatever the equvalent is to a good bag of H. So if they’re cutting it and mixing everything and they don’t do a good job, then maybe a handful of those thousand $10 bags end up with 0.5% fentanyl and another handful end up 20% and only 80% cut. So junkie does a couple of 0.5% bags and thinks it’s week, and then the next shot decides to do two bags at once and it’s a couple of the 20% bags, and he just did an exponentially larger dose than he was expecting.

I forgot to mention and just thought of this:

The hex bit I broke was a Craftsman. Does their lifetime guarantee still stand even though Sears doesn’t? Or it doesn’t extend to screwdriver hex bits?

You used to be able to take broken craftsman wrenches and Sears would replace them since they are guaranteed.

      Bepis

Is the bit marked with the Craftsman name? If it is, you could try Lowe’s or Ace Hardware and see, they will warranty the Sears era Craftsman, but they’re probably not going to do it if they don’t sell individual Craftsman 3/32 hex bits and/or the bit doesn’t say Craftsman on it.

That’s sort of a consumable anyway, so if they actually sell single bits, just spend the $2. Might be able to find a Bosch or DeWalt labeled one in a little card at Lowe’s or Home Depot but I’m not sure, check their website and see if there’s stock locally.

This, OP. Drive all over town until you find that specific tip sold individually for $3 or less, or if you're very lucky finding someone who will give you a free replacement. Anything else and you're being taken advantage of.

Op, I’ve worked in machine shops for decades, we don’t even use those soft ass bits,

We buy these nicer wera or bondhus Allen keys, chop them off at the L and at the ball end then use a jacobs chuck in a drill usually Milwaukee brand or a dewalt brand

And when they spit off we cut off a 1/4” and keep using it until it’s used up.

We do that because those are hardened

We also cut it in a lathe and face it.

But you can use a dremel while dipping it to keep it cool and deburr with sand paper

I already said I don’t want to end up with like 3-5 different bits sets with random stuff missing that I can’t keep of track any longer. The real issue is trying to mentally keep track of it all.

Then throw the sets with missing bits into a random bag and toss it somewhere so when you need to hammer a torx bit into a fricked hex fastener or have to cut a 1” PH2 bit in half to stick on a 1/4” wrench because of tight access to a screw, you can dig them out of a random bag.

I checked mine and I don’t have it. Tempted to send him a couple lbs of PH1 and 5/32.

I was just going to send him the 100pc set you can find for <$10 in-store, but it’s double the price on Amazon and Ebay with free shipping. If HF’s website had a “pick up in-store”, I would buy it at his local store for $9.99. Advance Auto has that option but I can’t find the set on their website.
