The first and only time we had his wife (she was a Canadian nurse) and kid over (he came over many times) we put on a proper feast like you do when you invite a family over. My takeaway is that disillusionment, in addition to narrative spinning, which aids in increasing disillusionment, is a major tool in controlling the people. Would a draft unintentionally overcome that disillusionment and get people invested and angry? That's the operating question. I'd think that people risking getting shipped to some place to die may piss them off, especially in a particularly unpatriotic country, but it is terrifying to think that the disillusionment is so strong people believe that it's hopeless, lay down, and die.
