awesome movie and I like the ending, despite the historical inaccuracies. What does bother me is how the heavy rain was falling only over the three native dudes in the beach but not over the approaching settlers
His hatred for Mel Gibson is ridiculous. With all his other videos he understands that the reason people watch him is to go through the historical aspects of the film and its veracity, but when it comes to Mel Gibson movies he throws that shit aside and becomes a movie critic and a very bad one at that
His analysis of the Patriot is pretty spot on. It really is just anti-English propaganda and completely ignores the nuanced aspects of a pretty complex war. But that's not Mel's fault, he was just an actor in that movie. His Braveheart and Apocalypto videos are just nitpicky and completely miss the point. He can't see the forest through the trees.
Apocalypto taps into the very soul of humanity. It's the hero's journey that everyone can recognize and feel on a cellular level. My only quip is that it should have been released without subtitles. You don't need to know what they're saying, Mel is such a fantastic visual artist that everything you need to know is conveyed through mood.
Apocalypto is not a hero's journey story. It is missing numerous elements or places them in the wrong spots to be effective. It's a great movie, but if it's hero's journey then so is Home Alone
Loved the movie. It was very refreshing to see a movie with unknown actors, no cgi, practical setting, visceral action, and a relatively simple story. Plus a lot of heart and soul put into it.
was it implied the plague was already there or brought by the invading europeans? >the final scene was presumably not the literal first europeans to land in the region and they had already brought it and it spread
ot did Mel leave it to interpretation?
The spanish had already to other parts of the continent for a while at that point. The natives spread the disease amongst themselves many years before most of them ever laid eyes on a spaniard. It's a huge area and there weren't that many spaniards. One infected native running into the jungle to a neighboring tribe and infecting them is all it takes for it to start spreading like wildfire
why didn't Euros get wiped out by Injun diseases brought back to Europe in similar fashion to the latter just being immediately wiped out by what a basic cold?
did modern Natives in the Americas all like erupt into flame upon getting covid?
I know we got syphilis from them but that didn't wipe out people en masse
He mentioned syphilis already. I'm pretty sure they already had TB and rabies as well since those could be transmitted through animals.
>a bajillion Europeans and about a hundred surviving legit Injuns in the current year later
yeah I'm a moron for wondering what happened here
I think it's because Europe wasn't isolated like the South Americans were, but had been in contact with all of Asia at that point and all the scary diseases that come from there.
when they're a bastardisation of different old world mutts with maybe a hint of whatever was there prior that only exist deep in some amazon forest who will chuck a spear at you before you even get a glimpse of what they actually look like
In particular Native Americans were highly susceptible to small pox because they had never been exposed to it while Africans, Europeans, and Asians had been exposed to it for 10,000 years. Siberians left for the Americas 15,000 years ago.
Because Euros got smashed by Chinese diseases constantly throughout the middle ages. It built up immunity while native Americans had a smaller gene pool and were isolated from Africa/Eurasia.
The biggest difference between Europe and the Americas was livestock. Animals are fucking disgusting and create all kinds of diseases. Native Americans had very little livestock and were mostly hunter/gatherers so when Europe brought over their pig and cow poop diseases the natives had no defense against these super viruses.
The reason the same shit didn't happen to Africa is because Africans had constant contact with the world throughout all of history and had built up immunities through trade and relations.
they were still more "strong" in their immunity compared to native americans
also don't forget the black plague, they suffered the consequences of livestock alright
Might want to read up on the Aztecs and surrounding tribes. Those fuckers were the edgiest motherfuckers to have ever graced this earth besides maybe the Assyrians.
The leader of a neighboring tribe gave them his daughter for marriage and to seal the bond of alliance. When the leader came to visit, the aztec priests came out wearing his daughters flayed skin and was doing a little dance in front of him. When he flipped out about seeing some old dude wearing his daughters skin, they had no idea what he was on about because in their eyes they were just being bros. Is that obnoxiously edgy enough for you?
I know that, but Gibson wanted to portray Aztec-tier violence which is the reason so many historyfags have a problem with this movie. Either way the movie was not obnoxiously edgy
Dances With Wolves was equally respectable in how they depicted there were clearly BAD indians/natives too and they weren't just retarded noble savages dancing along with the nearest crow or some shit and we should treat them like they had zero autonomy
And I say Mel's religion because I'm not quite sure we can call Mel a Christian. A true Christian would never criticize other religions, because he knows that religions are many but God is one.
What is a true Christian and when did they show up? Because throughout history there have been countless wars with Christians fighting over which God is the correct God.
>And I say Mel's religion because I'm not quite sure we can call Mel a Christian. A true Christian would never criticize other religions, because he knows that religions are many but God is one.
There is no salvation outside the Catholic Church.
I rewatched it last month and it's not as good as I remember it. Kinda shit money honestly. The only good thing about it is the scenery and sets. >dude survival and tribal violence and shit!
Was a good movie when I was 13 I guess.
Loved the behind the scenes feature with this dude talking about how Mel Gibson directed him. Mel told him "You don't need to act scary. You ARE scary."
it's kino
most kino, loved the ending most of all with the arrival of ships and the suggestion that absolutely everything was about to get thrown into the air
I liked how the oppressors just kneeled to their new gods, while the main character just got the fuck out of there with his family.
awesome movie and I like the ending, despite the historical inaccuracies. What does bother me is how the heavy rain was falling only over the three native dudes in the beach but not over the approaching settlers
the hose wouldn't reach that far
>heavy rain was falling only over the three native dudes in the beach but not over the approaching settlers
It's a metaphor for the land being tamed
Tropical rains can be like that though. You be getting drenched and 20 yards away is just a mist
yeah im thinking kino
>Mel Gibson made it and their loin cloths had the wrong shade of beige and therefore it's the biggest piece of shit movie ever made
It is 100% certified kino. The only people who hate it are midwits.
He literally just hated Mel Gibson. Most of his criticism weren't even accurate. Dude literally tried to say there were no Mayans in the 1500s.
just watched this crap, man that stupid piece of shit is too dense

He’s a libcuck he doesn’t need a reason to hate Mel Gibson.
t.garden gnome

I watched it first time but the subs weren't loading, took me like 15 minutes before I figured out there were actually supposed to be subtitles.
I watched 90% of playtime without subtitles. That was an experience.
Apocalypto is not a hero's journey story. It is missing numerous elements or places them in the wrong spots to be effective. It's a great movie, but if it's hero's journey then so is Home Alone
I disagree. The main characters father had some great wisdom to share.
Loved the movie. It was very refreshing to see a movie with unknown actors, no cgi, practical setting, visceral action, and a relatively simple story. Plus a lot of heart and soul put into it.
You dont remember the cgi animals?
was it implied the plague was already there or brought by the invading europeans?
>the final scene was presumably not the literal first europeans to land in the region and they had already brought it and it spread
ot did Mel leave it to interpretation?
I thought it was BECAUSE of the sacrifices.
Yeah remember the little girl?
she's all growed up now

Yep. European illnesses fucked up the Incas before Pizzaro came.
Not to mention the Inca civil war between Atahualpa and Huáscar, 4 days later the Spaniards arrived
>Inca civil war between Atahualpa and Huáscar
Which was directly caused by the last ruler's death by Smallpox
Apocalypto is probably one of the best post 911 films.
The ending is about how it's over for the Mayans nothing else.
It's ok. PrepHole talks it up too much
Summer is over. Leave you reddit fag
One of the few decent films even PrepHole isn't contrarian enough to shit on
>Watch without subtitles
>Can still understand everything perfectly
Kino
>would you like to know how you will die?
Scary cinammon dicky
It really had that
>come to my neighborhood motherfucker
energy.

at what % do Indians turn illegitimate?
when they're a bastardisation of different old world mutts with maybe a hint of whatever was there prior that only exist deep in some amazon forest who will chuck a spear at you before you even get a glimpse of what they actually look like
Lot of Latins are 75%+ native, do they count?
In particular Native Americans were highly susceptible to small pox because they had never been exposed to it while Africans, Europeans, and Asians had been exposed to it for 10,000 years. Siberians left for the Americas 15,000 years ago.
because we have meds and they don't
retard

Most ancient diseases either came from China, the ME, or North Africa. Europeans were pretty late to farming livestock.
they were still more "strong" in their immunity compared to native americans
also don't forget the black plague, they suffered the consequences of livestock alright
>Europeans were pretty late to farming livestock.
the fucking aryans m8
Obnoxiously edgy just for the sake of it
Hello HistoryBuff
How is it edgy? It's a story of fate and hope. Yeah it's violent, the world is a violent place anon.
Might want to read up on the Aztecs and surrounding tribes. Those fuckers were the edgiest motherfuckers to have ever graced this earth besides maybe the Assyrians.
The leader of a neighboring tribe gave them his daughter for marriage and to seal the bond of alliance. They're Mayans in the movie.
I know that, but Gibson wanted to portray Aztec-tier violence which is the reason so many historyfags have a problem with this movie. Either way the movie was not obnoxiously edgy
objectively in the top 5 best ever
Civilization is...le bad?
Wut?
Movie's message is literally 'Civilization bad return to tribalism'
Is it? Seems like more of a "live and let live" kind of message. Tribalism is a form of civilization anyways.
a legit great movie, and i glad Mel didn't listen to all the hollywood shitheads that called him crazy for wanting to make it.
Dances With Wolves was equally respectable in how they depicted there were clearly BAD indians/natives too and they weren't just retarded noble savages dancing along with the nearest crow or some shit and we should treat them like they had zero autonomy
Reminds me of this
>mfw trying to tell the cute girl I like her
Wtf is this anon?
It's the dream scene from Apocalypto. Did you not watch the movie?
Oohh thanks
I mean, is this from deleted scenes? I don't remember this from a movie.
No, it's the dream the main character has right before his village gets raped and pillaged.
🙁
Great kino, with the purpose of showing that other religions that are not Mel's religion are utter trash.
And I say Mel's religion because I'm not quite sure we can call Mel a Christian. A true Christian would never criticize other religions, because he knows that religions are many but God is one.
>A true Christian would never criticize other religions, because he knows that religions are many but God is one.
false.
There is no salvation outside the Catholic Church.
do you have a PHD in midwittery?
Amazing preformance of this guy, the costume is pure kino too.
yeah that guy was the shit, that other skinny deranged warrior who calls the main guy ulek was good too.
Started great. But about halfway through became a standard fugitive action flick. What a tragedy.
not enough black people. shit film.
Love this film.
Seek out the workprint version and you will see the hidden images that mad Mel snuck in.
They were taken out for home video releases.
Kino, but also annoyingly anachronistic with a predictable trope "twist" at the end.
more of a canard really
I remember when we did this to a friend once, good times!
told a mexican friend to do this with cocaine once, dumbfuck believed me and his dick got all soft and numb, sperged at me the next day
What the fuck was their problem.
Why was he so mean bros?
I rewatched it last month and it's not as good as I remember it. Kinda shit money honestly. The only good thing about it is the scenery and sets.
>dude survival and tribal violence and shit!
Was a good movie when I was 13 I guess.
what's the best way to force reddit zoomers like this back to /v/?
>Kinda shit money honestly.
Mel hating garden gnome detected.
It’s good but I found it boring for the sole reason of it having the same exact film structure as passion of the christ.
>The hero's journey had the exact same film structure as the hero's journey
It's a trope anon, and one present in thousands of films.
They made me watch this on school actually, i didn't like it at the time, i probably still don't like it
I think its one of the best movies ever made and only gets downplayed because it was made by mel gibson.
100% kino
The best movie made in the last 23 years.
Loved the behind the scenes feature with this dude talking about how Mel Gibson directed him. Mel told him "You don't need to act scary. You ARE scary."
He literally looks like kotal khan
This movie gave me an indigenous tribal fetish lol. Actually, more like it supercharged it, because I felt like that my whole life.
>Almost
