One. Sometimes I chamber a round, drop the magazine, and carry the gun that way. If I only have one shot, I know I'll make it count.

According to meta-analysis of incidents where a gun is used in self-defense situation , 97% of all situations are resolved with 4 rounds or less. And 99% of situations are resolved without any need of reloading a gun regardless of gun type.
So even a standard 6-shooter revolver is enough.

And let's be honest, if you get into situation which you can not resolve (or exit from) with six well placed shots ...that's probably a situation which you won't be able to resolve even if you had more.
So in that sense, even Colt 1911 boomers have a point. 8 shots without an extra mag is all you realisticly need if you are not a LEO or other active duty dude.

Me, personally? CZ-75 with 15 shots. Yes i know that the mag takes 16 rounds, I just prefer 15. Makes it easier to count. It's a personal preference.

You're going to live for 25,000 to 30,000 days on average.
A "One out of a hundred cases" statistic is not what you should base your self defense on.

      I don't carry a spare mag when I CC, I do keep 13+1 from a 16 round mag.

Load 16, carry one in the chamber, and fire 15 shots. On the 15th shot, if you're actually counting rounds, reload, and you'll have 1 in the chamber during your reload

What's in the drum/mag + at least one full reload.
I once heard from a guy who successfully used a Glock 19 in self defense and in his case he was attacked by several people, they tripped him and he fell down on his left arm and it broke, the guys started kicking him all over. He managed to pull out the gun with his right arm while protecting his head with the left and killed one of the bad guys, the others ran away.
He was in a huge panic and he said that doesn't remember firing and he didn't hear a single shot even though in reality he fired his entire mag in around 3-4 seconds.
Situations like this are obviously very rare but they do happen and it makes me think what if the bad guys realized that he fired all his shots and decided to turn around in that case? He did not have a reload because he thought that 15+1 is plenty. Luckily that time it was

Generally, 5-10 is ideal. Think about the situation where you may actually need to draw a CCW. The decision to shoot is made because of an immediate threat of harm. In that moment, you likely have less than 2 seconds before you are injured. That's about how long it should take to dump 10 rounds if you're quick.

Carry 45 rounds if that's what makes you comfortable, but I don't know of a single situation where you are forced to shoot and come out unscathed after taking ten whole seconds to incapacitate/dissuade your attacker(s).

BEEN SEEIN A LOT OF YOU YOUNGINS ARGUING 45 VS 9MM WITH ME. EVERY MILLENIAL THAT ARGUES 9MM IS BETTER THAN 45 LOSES THE ARGUMENT EVERYTIME. SO I'LL DO YALL A FAVOR AND MAKE MY POINTS HERE SO WE CAN END THIS DISCUSSIONS:

ALL YOU KIDS ALWAYS SAY 9MM IS "GOOD ENOUGH". WELL,

IS "GOOD ENOUGH" GONNA HELP YOU WHEN TYRONE PULLS A ROD ON YOU?

IS "GOOD ENOUGH" GONNA HELP YOU WHEN YOU CATCH JAMAL LOOKIN AT YOUR GIRL?

IS "GOOD ENOUGH" GONNA HELP WHEN YOU CATCH DARNELL STEALIN THE RIMS OFF YOUR 67 MUSTANG?

WHEN I WAS KILLIN VIET CONG IN THE JUNGLE, WE DIDN'T ACCEPT "GOOD ENOUGH" WE WANTED THE BEST AND ONLY THE BEST. WE TOSSED OUR FISHER PRICE M16 TOYS AWAY AND PULLED OUT ARE 1911S. WE SURVIVED MULTIPLE AMBUSHES THANKS TO OUR TRUSTY 1911S AND THE STOPPING POWER OF THE 45 ACP. GOD BLESS JOHN MOSES BROWNING FOR SAVIN MY PLATOON. LET'S NOT FORGET ALL THE WWII VETS HE SAVED.

TO HELL WITH YOU MILLENIALS AND YOUR WEAK TUPPERWARE 9MMS. BETTER HOPE YOU DON'T GET INTO A GUNFIGHT WITH ME, ONE SHOT AND YOUR DEAD. BETTER HOPE YOU HAVE THEM "HICAP" CLIPS BECAUSE YOU'LL NEED 'EM!

ME? FORGET ABOUT CARRYING A CLIP! JUST ONE IN THE CHAMBER KEEPS ME OUT OF DANGER!

BIGGER IS ALWAYS BETTER. END OF STORY.

I usually carry two or three, but if I'm feeling frisky I switch from a couple airplane bottles to a pint or half pint bottle. Just depends on what's on the day's agenda. But why are we discussing booze on a weapons forum?

The least I'd ever carry in a single gun would be 6 rounds. Semi auto or revolver it's fine just have some spare mags/loaders.

If I actually felt like I needed that much ammo I'd be wearing webbing. 2 mags balances the gun nicely though.

yes, yes, studies say and statistically and all that, but I am not bargaining my life on a statistic. i dont gamble my money and im not gambling my life. more bullets raises my chance of survival, so i will take as many as i can comfortably carry

Smallest gun I have is a Sig 365 and that's 12+1. I'd still be comfortable carrying less, but I don't see the point when I can have that much capacity in such a tiny pistol.

5 shots of .38 special is my normal carry innapocket, but I keep a speed strip in my other pocket with another 6 rounds of .38 special. That said, I might start pocket carrying another j frame in .32 long in my left pocket as a backup, Frank Sheeran style.

One cartridge in a single shit rifle is enough for one hog or a deer, but an AR-10 with jungle taped 30rnd mags, a suppressor, and thermal night vision clip is enough to bag dozens of hogs in one night.
