A strong load of .357 mag would probably do the trick if you had the chance for a few shots, but you wouldn’t catch me out there with anything smaller than a .44 mag. Autoloaders could try a 10mm but I wouldn’t feel safe without something bigger.

The Danish Sirius patrol in Greenland carries Glock 20's for polar bear defense. They have proven effective and a Polar bear is a lot bigger than anything in Montana.

I agree that a 10mm is adequate in most situations. I’ve seen Alaskan hunters take down moose with a single well placed shot from a 10mm.

How many bears have you shot?

I had links to bear shootings involving all calibers, truth is you can kill a grizzly with even a 22, but the smaller the caliber the more bullets you need. For a grizzly the 22 shooter and the 9mm shooter needed to reload several times to kill it, I think in one instance of 9mm the thing clawed the guy's face off.

357 and 10mm is the sweet spot for 1 shot one kill type shit. Anything above that, or anything that's spitfire hot in those loads will definitely do the trick. When in doubt 357 .

Ah the bear thread where a bunch of noguns tourists try to argue that bears are bulletproof
Me? I'd carry a Glock 17 or Glock 20. Yes 9mm will kill a bear, again they're not bulletproof and only noguns think so

I’ve shot blackbear with both 9mm and .357 and in my experience, 9mm just pisses them off until you empty half a magazine into them and they finally die from blood loss. .357 usually does the job in 1-2 rounds.

There has never been a case of .44magnum not being successful in deterring a bear attack.

Why not just bring a S&W 500 Mag? That will do the trick. I guess you could save a couple hundred bucks buying something smaller. Personally, I like to think my life is worth more than a couple hundred extra in my account.

Good luck hitting a running bear when you adrenaline dump from seeing it running at you and your hands shake so bad you couldn't hit steel at 10 yards + good luck lining up a second third fourth fifth sixth shot after a miss

OP didn't ask how to shoot a bear if he was a complete pussy and couldn't aim. He asked what caliber would be effective. Fricking pussy.
