What's the deal with the Russian air force?

What's the deal with the Russian air force? They've had significant losses but still have plenty of planes right?

PGMs are short but they must have some bombs, no?

So, where were they this weekend? Is there something I'm missing here. They had 24 hours to move planes around even if they were sitting far back to avoid Ukrainian drones. They should have been able to absolutely rape that column from the ground.

>But it had AA
How much could it possibly have? More over, they sent aircraft, but just rotary wing, exactly the type of craft that is most vulnerable to a column on the move with MANPADS.

I can get Russia being incompetent and having resources elsewhere, but 24 hours is plenty of time to move fighters around.

Is this weird or is there a good explanation for only using rotary wing and only a few?

Having more planes does not mean they are all in operating conditions. Having more planes also does not mean they have more pilots.

? anon did you not see them miss the road? Fighterbomber was fricking seething about their performance, questioning their loyalties. I'm too lazy to find it but there's a video of a Su-27 type aircraft flying around at low altitude on the day of. They didn't get too close because the column had at minimum 2 Pantsirs with them, as well as at least 1 Strela.

these nigerians can't get enough flying hours to maintain their civilian pilot certification, they certainly can't have had much ground-attack practice

they tried to bomb Wagner with rotary aviation but those got shot down.

they tried to bomb them with fixed-wing aviation but hit civilians instead.

while transferring pilots (assumedly to bomb Wagner harder) wagner shot down their transport plane.

It wasn't a transport plane, it was an airborne command post.

they don't have enough pilots and the pilots don't get enough flight hours. I also wouldn't be surprised if the ground crews haven't been marched to their deaths in bakhamut or some place like that

My thoughts were that, if it is weird for more aircraft not to be used, maybe it's because the military refused to send them?

That would explain why there has been no Putin - Shoigu show of strength to prove the coup didn't work, just stock footage, a Gerasimov still hasn't been seen or.heard,.right?

Maybe the this was the last straw for military leaders. Obviously they don't want Wagner to actually take Moscow, because a lot of them are crazy gung-ho on the war, but they might have used the situation to extract concessions?

IDK how else there is no real bombing and Prig gets to keep his private army next door.

    I never understood this either.
If there was a column of mutinous mercenaries advancing on Washington D.C. after having taken Richmond, the USAF would have drawn a circle around the location of the column on a map and vaporized every living organism inside it.

Similar question, why have Russia completely avoided strategic or heavy bombing in Ukraine? Russian airforce has been missing all war.

That's all well and good, but the only reason these guys go and fight is because they're offered a chance at a full pardon.
Even if you conscripted 100k prisoners with a casualty rate of 90%, that's still 10,000 potential murderers, rapists, drug dealers, and gang members who get released back into society with a clean slate. All of them with weapons training and more than a few managing to smuggle illegal arms back into the country.
Hope you feel safe at night when Vadim the Eater makes his weekly kill at your local commieblock playground or stairwell, or when your local police drop like flies when the Russian mafiosi are exclusively armed with smuggled AKs and are well versed in bounding overwatch.

The problem is that people have been being released at the end of their 6 month terms for 5 months now. They aren't all in one place where you can smush them like ants.

Some have even already been picked up for recidivist murders.

Russians have used Tu-95s, Tu-22Ms, and Tu-160s at the very beginning of the war.
If they stopped flying jets and helicopters over most of Ukraine due to the danger of basic b***h air defenses like Stingers, they're not going to risk their strategic capabilities by flying bootleg Stratofortresses into Patriot batteries.

in modern times, airforce is just to show off on parades.
right now you just use rockets with 100% precision, artillery, or drones.

Can you also post the image with the air-to-ground and ground-to-air losses edited next to the various air defenses like in picrel? Would be really nice to show that compared to an image which includes the U-2 and F-117 in a Vietnam War context, neither of which were shot down more than once and neither of which where shot down in relation to Vietnam. Also please include the AWACS that was shot down (?), that would be a nice high value target to parade on such an image. Thanks.

like 1000 sorties and one U2 shoot down proves russian superiority or one f117 vs 1300 sorties? well looks less embarrassing than 0-100 kek

Wagner unironically used the isis tactics of moving together with the civilian traffic, so simply bombing them to oblivion was out of question. I guess, since they're Russians, they'd still bomb them if no agreement was reached.

Wagner convoy had a couple of Pantsir which are SHORAD units and wouldn’t be able to deal with high-altitude bombing. Russia has glidebomb kits similar to JDAM (kits that mod dumb bombs into guided weapons) at the very least. You don’t see them much in Ukraine because there’s heavy strategic AD denying Ukrainian airspace to a great degree.

Also, the Wagner convey was mostly civilian vehicles. There were a couple of IFVs…on trailers, and a few tanks….also on trailers. It simply wan’t much of a military column. Putin says he ordered everything possible to be done to ensure no loss of life, which you can take or leave but it’s one possible factor. The VKS no-show does sound like a fake stunt all things told. If they can run HUNDREDS of sorties a day against Ukraine but are a no-show for an armed coup gunning for Moscow it does sound pretty ridiculous.

i think at least some air force units posted statements in support of wagner's march, and prigozhin claims they were able to blockage military bases and airfields along their way
and the wagnerites got pantsirs at some point

you can have a million planes but it means nothing when none of your pilots are trained
