Headliner material, be it fabric or vinyl, doesn't cost much. They sell small cans of headliner adhesive for reasonable prices too, which is all you'll need for that.
you've obviously never had to deal with headliner repair/replacement. it's generally just stretchy cloth, and there is a thick layer of foam between it and the roof which is what degrades over time. re applying some kind of thin headliner cloth to a bare metal roof with spray adhesive without some intermediary layer is going to look horrible. you need something relatively rigid or thick to hide all the seams and ridges you're going to be applying it over.
I've done 3, which I'd bet is 3 more than you have. The fabric comes with foam backing attached so it's not like I said to put a bedsheet and elmers on it. But I second

as a better choice than "cheap material" or stick-on neoprene.
holy frick you're stupid and you're putting your foot in your mouth.

, the headliner fabric is foam backed and it literally comes on a roll and is applied with a spray adhesive at the car factory. You can buy both the fabric (in multiple colors and styles) and the adhesive at any well stocked fabric supply store.
Any thick fabric you like from the fabric store + headliner adhesive. Don't use standard spray adhesive, the heat will destroy it. Sign up for the JoAnn fabrics mailing list and wait for a coupon. I didn't bother with any foam layer and it turned out fine.
After. Just cut it kind of to size just so you don't have too much excess and then glue it on. Use a sharp razor, trim to fit and cut a slit to pull the overhead light cabling through.
Has anyone ever flocked the inside of a hard top in the same manner as a dashboard? My friend got an aftermarket fiberglass hardtop for his s2k and wants to somehow finish it. We were just throwing around ideas and this one of mine. The issue is that there are a bunch of different styles of hardtop for this car and there's a lack of off the shelf headliners for them.
welp O.P., I hope you don't put a headliner in there.

add nothing, use it as it was designed, and above all - have fun with it.
>waaah, 3 ounces of fabric will ruin the car
I know shaving off little bits of weight is how mazda got it light, but just take a shit before each drive.

if you're getting stuff that's already foam backed then that would likely work great since needing that was the entire point of my post.

Frick this is so miserable to do. I gave up and paid $500 for a new installed and was grateful I never had to deal with it again
imitation crab meat is pretty cheap and delicious
Craft felt. Stick it on with spray adhesive.
You stay away from my train set, you broke the caboose last time.
>Craft felt. Stick it on with spray adhesive.
horrible idea. Craft felt will turn to dust in a car.

Never done any car/upholstery work.
Do you do the cuts for the wires and trim edges as you're gluing it or after? Or do you measure everything and do all cuts beforehand?

Kilmat headliner ftmfw.
Speaker carpet or ozite comes in every color and only needs a little spray glue to be applied.
I've used it on a bunch of headliners.
O.P., is this you with the Miata?
If so why even put in a headliner? It will not help with noise reduction.
Nothing helps with noise reduction for the NA Miata hardtop. Just drive it and have fun.

I've stapled carpet to 1/8" plywood screwed into the frame but you might as well bedliner it
this thread is filled with all the wrong ideas about what to do with an MX-5.

>fix it
>use it to shred tires
>break it
>fix it
fun for all ages.
