I would say
1. Dogs, especially big noisy ones. Will scare people away and if not you will know someone is there.
2. A gun. Handgun is generally enough. Get a weapon light and a full size handgun.
3. Shotgun and or rifle. Will be bigger and harder to maneuver. Unless you live in a giant castle a handgun should be sufficient.
4. Anything else but preferably a large bludgeon

Yeah but a handgun is better imo for bump in the night. It can be stored easily and safely if necessary in a drawer locked loaded and ready to go. It is not cumbersome so you won't have to worry about bumping into walls and stuff which is possible to avoid with a long gun but you might have to train more with it in your house to get the muscle memory to. It bang it against everything. If you're worried about wild animals or large jogging groups then yeah a rifle or shotgun is better.
Regardless, you should get all three if you can. If you can only get one, I would try to get a handgun. If you have some cash then I would suggest a handgun and an ar15.
You can get a Glock 17 and a light for like $600 total probably. You can buy a ln ar15 from psa for -$400. Add an extra 200-300 for ammo and mags.

You're going to be changing a lot of parts. If you like that, that's fine. If you don't, get a Springfield Hellcat Pro (or just a Hellcat if you want easier concealment). Get a weapon mounted light. Streamlight/Olight is fine. Defensive ammo and FMJ for practice.
Handguns have much less stopping power and require more training. Handguns are for carrying a firearm on your person.
Get the shotgun. Long guns are better at putting people down and considering this is for home defense it stays at home. Why limit yourself to a little pee shooter handgun?
Mossberg hands down, makes the best pump shotguns for the money. Their Maverick 88 series is still only $250. It's essentially a mossberg 500 with a cheaper finish and a cheaper to manufacture saftey button instead of the tang saftey switch mossberg is known for. Leave the saftey off and chamber empty. Just pump it when you're ready (not because muh pump noise scare em away. Because you don't want to drop a loaded shotgun with a free floating firing pin.) You can replace the stock for the one in your OP but the pump is a little more difficult to replace on 88s.
Mossberg 500 are nicer fit and finish and easier to replace the pump for something else, like the one in your op or one with a built in light (those are ugly though)
Mossberg 590 is even nicer and comes in tacticoolio models

.223 is a tiny catridge, barely bigger then the standard .22 used for squirrels. You wont even slow down an attacker with a round that small, and the 5.56 is huge, its basically artillery. What you really need is a mid range catridge, like a .308, though I prefer the .338. Under no circumstances do you need anything bigger then .50cal. the 5.56 is massive, its basically for anti-tank, anti aircraft. You Americans are just crazy. You need to outlaw the use of 5.56 and replace it with something reasonable, like a .308.

I wouldn’t get a Beretta as your first gun. I would get a Sig p320 or an Sig p365 Macro. Glocks are always good but Sig is beating them at the moment. If you really want a hammer fired gun get a CZ-75 or any CZ variant with a double action trigger which will make it feel a bit safer to have around the house loaded or if you ever open carry it.
Personally I recommend the Desert Eagle it has good stopping power and looks cool. Alternatively a Tec 9 is also a pretty good indoors gun. I've also seen a lot of people recommend the 44 Magnum but personally I don't like revolvers.
Whatever you do, don't get a 9mm lots of chuds will try to talk you into it but it has no stopping power. You might as well troon out completely if you go down that path.

But rule #0 is that you want to put more rounds downrange than them. You can put a shitload more lead accurately downrange with an AR than with a shotgun, even if it has a lmao meme double-mag.
Pistols are great, but let's be honest that they're very hard to use well. I've been shooting for a long time and I'm quick and accurate with one, but a beginner will always do better with a rifle.
Kel tec ksg with mini shells is 24 rounds...I'm not arguing an ar is definitely better than your average shotgun, but a kel tec might beat an AR 15 idk.

Yeah I've held the KSG and I thought it was sick too but then I held the KS7 and had to have it. It's a really neat gun it's just too bad mine doesn't work right. Also I kept the carry handle sights on it for that awesome space-gun look.

It depends on your situation but for me personally living in a suburb I've found a compact 9mm to be best. Sure I have shotguns, ARs, etc but guess what? When I go to answer the door or to go get mail or whatever I tend to leave my rifles in the bedroom, making them useless. My 9mm is actually on me at all times so that makes it the most useful (actually I have a .380 on me most often but I wouldn't suggest that).
Now if you live on a large property maybe you should start with a rifle.

Dogs. By far. I have 2 Caucasian sheperds. Not what I'd advise people to get, but outstanding guard dogs. When I installed my solar panels, I had 3 break-in attempts. Dogs prevented them all. Found some bloody meat on the grass, but it could have come from something else, these dogs don't just keep gyps away, if any woodland creature find it's way into my yard, it gets ripped apart. If you want to go the handgun route, I would STRONGLY advise you go to a range and rent a few handguns to try first. I can leave everything unlocked and trust my neighbors to just walk in and borrow what they need without stealing shit from me. It all depends on area but the overwhelming majority of our cities are dead.
Nothing beats picrel badboy when it comes to home defense. 10 rounds of semi automatic buckshot goodness. You can blindfire this fricker into a hallway and be sure anything standing there is likely dead or severely injured. No overpenetration so you don't have to worry about hitting your neighbors cat. Reliable like clockwork, no fancy internals, basically a sized up ak, easy to clean and maintain, also cheap.
I always preferred pistols for home defense. Fire a shot at them and most intruders will abort their plans. If you're really aiming to kill (ex. in a shootout) then get your rifles and shotguns if you have them. Make sure that you have ear protection though. Better if you have them suppressed. The best of both worlds would be a suppressed SBR but that's just my opinion. Always go for with what you can afford and handle.
I deal with a lot of animals around my property at night. Coyotes, bears, foxes, skunks, etc. attempting to break into various enclosures.
At this point, I have a 9mm Glock with a light and FMJ ammo for animals. This is all you'll need for home defense. Use HP ammo if you're worried about humans. If you want something quieter, get a Ruger MKIV with a suppressor and HP 22lr ammo. It will still do the trick.

I had these, no bears or foxes, but raccoons, deer, cougars and bobcats more like. Never had to shoot a single one, because they all respected boundaries and did their thing. I have often been close enough to reach out grab many of these animals. Amazing what a peaceful existence can do for you.

Yeah but a handgun is better imo for bump in the night. It can be stored easily and safely if necessary in a drawer locked loaded and ready to go. It is not cumbersome so you won't have to worry about bumping into walls and stuff which is possible to avoid with a long gun but you might have to train more with it in your house to get the muscle memory to. It bang it against everything. If you're worried about wild animals or large jogging groups then yeah a rifle or shotgun is better.
Regardless, you should get all three if you can. If you can only get one, I would try to get a handgun. If you have some cash then I would suggest a handgun and an ar15.
You can get a Glock 17 and a light for like $600 total probably. You can buy a ln ar15 from psa for -$400. Add an extra 200-300 for ammo and mags.

Mossberg hands down, makes the best pump shotguns for the money. Their Maverick 88 series is still only $250. It's essentially a mossberg 500 with a cheaper finish and a cheaper to manufacture saftey button instead of the tang saftey switch mossberg is known for. Leave the saftey off and chamber empty. Just pump it when you're ready (not because muh pump noise scare em away. Because you don't want to drop a loaded shotgun with a free floating firing pin.) You can replace the stock for the one in your OP but the pump is a little more difficult to replace on 88s.
Mossberg 500 are nicer fit and finish and easier to replace the pump for something else, like the one in your op or one with a built in light (those are ugly though)
Mossberg 590 is even nicer and comes in tacticoolio models

.223 is a tiny catridge, barely bigger then the standard .22 used for squirrels. You wont even slow down an attacker with a round that small, and the 5.56 is huge, its basically artillery. I wouldn’t get a Beretta as your first gun. I would get a Sig p320 or an Sig p365 Macro. Glocks are always good but Sig is beating them at the moment. If you really want a hammer fired gun get a CZ-75 or any CZ variant with a double action trigger which will make it feel a bit safer to have around the house loaded or if you ever open carry it.
Personally I recommend the Desert Eagle it has good stopping power and looks cool. Alternatively a Tec 9 is also a pretty good indoors gun. I've also seen a lot of people recommend the 44 Magnum but personally I don't like revolvers.
Whatever you do, don't get a 9mm lots of chuds will try to talk you into it but it has no stopping power. You might as well troon out completely if you go down that path.

I used to say shotguns are ideal for home defense but the more I use pistols the more I think they're better in most situations. If you have a large piece of land and you need protection from people coming up on the land and fricking with you a shotgun is still number one. In more dense urban areas, one of the most common home invasion tactics is for someone to knock on your door wait for you to open it and then attack you and push their way in. Although 99.99% of the time it's going to be a neighbor a salesman or or police or some shit like that. So when you hear a knock on the door you can't just keep answering the door with a shotgun in hand. Fun to larp about but not realistic. Answering the door with a CC it's just more practical although I will occasionally open carry if I get the suspicion that they're casing my house pretending to be door to door sales.

Pistols are great, but let's be honest that they're very hard to use well. I've been shooting for a long time and I'm quick and accurate with one, but a beginner will always do better with a rifle.
Kel tec ksg with mini shells is 24 rounds...I'm not arguing an ar is definitely better than your average shotgun, but a kel tec might beat an AR 15 idk.

It depends on your situation but for me personally living in a suburb I've found a compact 9mm to be best. Sure I have shotguns, ARs, etc but guess what? When I go to answer the door or to go get mail or whatever I tend to leave my rifles in the bedroom, making them useless. My 9mm is actually on me at all times so that makes it the most useful (actually I have a .380 on me most often but I wouldn't suggest that).
Now if you live on a large property maybe you should start with a rifle.

Dogs. By far. I have 2 Caucasian sheperds. Not what I'd advise people to get, but outstanding guard dogs. When I installed my solar panels, I had 3 break-in attempts. Dogs prevented them all. I think one of the thieves lost some bits. Found some bloody meat on the grass, but it could have come from something else, these dogs don't just keep gyps away, if any woodland creature find it's way into my yard, it gets ripped apart. Depends on your budget. If you're a fricking poorgay, go get a Mossberg Maverick. If you have some money, go get a basic AR from PSA or Aero Precision or something. Nothing beats picrel badboy when it comes to home defense. 10 rounds of semi automatic buckshot goodness. You can blindfire this fricker into a hallway and be sure anything standing there is likely dead or severely injured. No overpenetration so you don't have to worry about hitting your neighbors cat. Reliable like clockwork, no fancy internals, basically a sized up ak, easy to clean and maintain, also cheap.

I always preferred pistols for home defense. Fire a shot at them and most intruders will abort their plans. If you're really aiming to kill (ex. in a shootout) then get your rifles and shotguns if you have them. Make sure that you have ear protection though. Better if you have them suppressed. The best of both worlds would be a suppressed SBR but that's just my opinion. Always go for with what you can afford and handle.
I deal with a lot of animals around my property at night. Coyotes, bears, foxes, skunks, etc. attempting to break into various enclosures.
At this point, I have a 9mm Glock with a light and FMJ ammo for animals. This is all you'll need for home defense. Use HP ammo if you're worried about humans. If you want something quieter, get a Ruger MKIV with a suppressor and HP 22lr ammo. It will still do the trick.

I had these, no bears or foxes, but raccoons, deer, cougars and bobcats more like. Never had to shoot a single one, because they all respected boundaries and did their thing. I have often been close enough to reach out grab many of these animals. Amazing what a peaceful existence can do for you.
