That's something I can agree with. However, I've thought that hunting has more in common with trickier tasks like recon work, something most soldiers ain't going to be tasked with.
Since we agree that hunting may have something in common with military training, would it benefit the thread if I post here a chapter about hunting from a soviet military training book? It's going to take a while since I'm going to be busy with rl things, but if thread would last for few hours, I might get it all finished.

That's not quite a field manual, more like a book for the officers in charge of training recon groups. It was written in 1945 by Konstantin Bulochko, a sports coach and fencer. The book is called Физичecкaя пoдгoтoвкa paзвeдчикa, and it has some good advice on general exercise for everyone who wants to be fit and tacticool, from general exercise to various wrestling advice and advice on how to spend your free time.
Hunting is a brilliant way for recon soldier's physical exercise and endurance test. Hunting helps in developing soldier's endurance, patience, ability to recognise one's whereabouts, makes him more observing, careful, inventive, develops his initiative and multiple other skills and combat qualities. At the same time hunting is a healthy active pastime.
There are many kinds and types of hunting. It's recommended to organise following types of solitary and collective hunts for recons, depending on the space for hunting, season and weapon available:
- waterfowl hunting (ducks) with careful approach to the water, with the use of boats, shooting from cover etc,
- grouse hunt with sneak approach,
- pheasant and bustard hunt,
- hunt for birds of prey (hawk, magpie, jay, eagle owl, common owls)
- hare hunt with no dogs, fox hunting, shooting squirrels, wild boars, goats etc
- collective hunts on wolves, jackals, bears and other carnivores

Different countries have different laws and orders on the right to hunt, designed to preserve some of the game species. In Soviet Union hunters have right to hunt throughout the entire territory except reserves, protected areas and areas assigned to other organisations. While hunting you must obey the rules, laws and time limits for hunting.
Extermination of carnivorous animals and birds is open throughout the year. In recon groups hunting should be organised mainly in the days and hours of resting, during several day hikes away from the main bases.
While organising the hunt, commander should do his homework:
- Learn about regional time limits
- get to know the hunting grounds
- check the weapon, ammo, gear adjustment and presence of MRE (if necessary)
- gather soldiers in groups, choose the group leaders and assign newbies to more experienced hunters.
- give precise tasks, mark the action areas, azimuths, signals, time and spot for gathering.
In addition to variety of hunts, commander in charge of education and training of recon troops should also give them various tasks, such as reconnaissance of the hunting grounds, stalking of birds and animals, track reading, limited ammunition hunting on particular game, hunting particular game in a defined area of forest or river while approaching the area by map, by azimuth, by tracks or marks left by the team leader etc.
Well organised and determined hunting is going to hone the health, skills and battle readiness of a recon without any doubt
