What would a 9.5x40mm cartridge look like?

>the BR55 fires 9.5x40mm M634 HP-SAP, and 9.5x40mm SAP-HE
what would that even be comparable to? Some magnum round? Would a rifle chambered in it be like that .300winmag AR-10ish rifle from Falcor?

it's right there if you look up 9.5x40mm
the answer is oddly short, especially considering the long magazine. I'm not surprised though, halo was never about the details, it was about being badass

that seems... short? your projectile diameter is basically 25% of your case length in a rifle that's supposedly fulfilling a DMR (frick off nitpickers i know its a different gun) role. IIRC it was semi auto and burst in canon, and then they had another version that was full auto. been a while since i brushed up on halo lore.

but anyway, 9.5x40mm could be an intentionally misleading name. maybe the projectile is 9.5mm but the case is stupidly fat (.22TCM?), or maybe it's a different propellant that doesn't need case length seeing as how they worked out caseless ammo, or maybe 40mm is the case length before bottleneck. who knows. i want to give it the benefit of the doubt because the BR55 is easily my favorite UNSC rifle for gameplay

The BR cartridge is supposed to have a significant velocity, accuracy, and range advantage over the UNSC's .308, which is supposed to be at least a bit faster than modern standard.
The AR was supposed to be extremely innefective against covenant shields and armor, necessitating a much more powerful cartridge.

The pressure of the ammunition must be higher than modern standards, perhaps through a difference of propellant.

Harder to explain "in universe" is the virtual lack of recoil on UNSC weapons, in cutscenes and live action. More than just ordinary Hollywood bullshit, it seems like some kind of actual recoil reduction with sci Fi technology is happening. Small women easily handle full auto .308 and 8ga "magnum" loadings, people fire the magnum pistol, with a cartridge larger than a 50AE, like a .25, and in fact Miranda was totally confident she could fire the 8ga one handed.

for auto-loading weapons (semi or full), an AK107 style system makes the most sense. either that, or an electronic counterweight system like an electric blowback airsoft gun just in reverse. either is likely seeing as how all the UNSC guns have glowy lights and shit, and half of them have ammo counters. it's not so far fetched that there would be a solenoid rigged up to act on recoil impulse.

I was imagining a balanced recoil system as well. I wonder how manageable .308 would be?

      Actually, it's single-base propellant.
As in, there's just a shot glassful of nitroglycerin in every case, and the chamber is rated at 200Kpsi.

yeah, turbo propellant. that makes sense, kinda like how .38spl loaded up with modern powder would blow the frick out of the cylinder because it was originally meant for black powder. of course we use smokeless in .38spl but with some adjustments

I ran the RFB in bf4 solely because it looked like the DMR

          Anonymous

how would I go about making this
the hardest bits as I see it are attaching the handguard at the front, leaving access to the gas adjustment intact, and the whole frontsight assembly (fricks with barrel harmonics)
the rest are just designing holes to fit over existing ones
of course, the bigges problem with the DMR is that it has a bottom mounted gas system while the RFB has a top mounted one

            Anonymous

It looks like all the furniture screws on somehow, so you could just replace it with 3d printed parts. Probably glass filled nylon. The handguard can just be a piece of flat steel bent to shape and you can mount it using the existing screw holes on the grip there and at the top to your 3d printed foregrip. Or the handguard could be 3d printed as part of the whole forend part. You'll just have to deal with the gas tube being wrong but a light or laser mounted there will give it the right look. The front sight could potentially be an off the shelf flip up sight, the muzzle device would just be a long flash hider or something. find an optic riser that looks close enough or have one machined and then throw a small optic on top. Oh and you could try to machine rear sights into the optic riser, I suppose.

              Anonymous

              >The front sight could potentially be an off the shelf flip up sight
I'm more worried about getting the thing to attach without fricking up the barrel floating
the muzzle device is basically off the shelf

                Anonymous

maybe modify it slightly so the front sight flips up from an extension on the 3d printed forend. Same for the light mount, that way nothing is touching the barrel. But then you would want to reinforce the forend so the sight stays fixed properly. Maybe it's better to just clamp the sight directly to the barrel and weld it so it's always true and just provide clearance between that and the handguard. the sight would be a small piece so I don't think it'll really mess up the barrel floating.

Objectively the DMR is piss weak because it fires the same round as the AR.
They should have said it fired 50BMG, one line in an item description and it's all fixed. It's big enough, compare it's actual size to the Lynx 50 cal rifle.

Or .300 Win mag or .338 Norma Magnum. Basically anything stronger than .308
Even though canonically, the MA5 series fricks hard

            Anonymous

            >Even though canonically, the MA5 series fricks hard
It was ineffective against even light covenant body armor and even UNSC flexible armor. One book had a Marine shot past her armor with a stolen AR and her soft armor stopped the round though she was knocked down.
In one book a marine jams his MA5 muzzle to skin on an Elite and the bullets don't even make it out the other side of him. He dumps half a magazine before the elite drops.
In another book someone is shooting an advancing Brute (with no helmet) in the face with an AR, and likewise hits him something like fifteen times in the head and face without killing him. The book describes his skull deflecting the armor piercing rounds even as it cracks and chunks of bone fly out of his head, and his skin smokes out of several holes.
Of course, then you have other writers who think Joe Schmoe marine is taking on ten brutes, and that comic where an elite gets his head blown clean through by an actual subsonic fuddy five cowboy gun (which later also punches through ONI issue armor).

So I guess it's as this Anon says

all of the tech specs are wandwavy BS to the point that it's clearly an after-afterthought and has nothing to do with how the game plays. no weapons share ammo even when they use "the same ammo" in similar magazines with wildly different capacities.
makes me wonder why they couldn't have sent a reply all with like "can anyone here that knows about guns make up some mildly believable stuff for the manual that nobody is going to even read"
but it's Halo so the details are definitely not the point so honestly don't care. I'll just assume the manual is wrong.
