Georgia couldn't sustain losses, Okraina can.

    >much better
They performed about the same with just as much incompetence (failing to secure air superiority against a nation without any fighters, losing strategic bombers, air force and army conducting separate campaigns, etc). The only difference is that Georgians were geared towards COIN operations in the sandbox whereas Ukraine actually put in work to create a real military.

      How did that happen?

Lack of meaningful SEAD capabilities if I had to guess.

Geoegia didn't offer nearly as much resistance, Russians achieved much more surprise, and Georgia is much smaller

    https://press.armywarcollege.edu/parameters/vol39/iss1/7/

"The retrospective critique of Russia’s armed forces that publicly
unfolded in the autumn of 2008 was centered on key aspects of the military’s
combat capabilities.8 A recognizable pattern emerged which focused on
aged vehicles, hardware, and weaponry; ineffective command and control
organizations and systems; lack of interservice coordination; failures of
intelligence support and the GLONASS (Global’naya Navigatsionnaya
Sputnikovaya Sistema, or Global Navigation Satellite System)"

"Communication systems and electronic warfare assets employed by
commanders and frontline forces were obsolete, in many cases “unchanged
since Soviet times.” The 58th Army commander, Lieutenant-General
Anatoliy Khrulev, was reported to have communicated with his forces in
the midst of combat via a satellite phone borrowed from a journalist, since
    communication between units was unavailable"

"The Russian casualty rate was also disproportionately high and may
have reflected shortfalls of identification-friend-or-foe (IFF) equipment.
Obsolete equipment in many cases rendered the units “blind and deaf” and
may have been a contributory factor in losses from friendly fire"
    Good read tbh OP

Georgia didn't have the US operating drones overhead to guide GPS arty and large development of their military through US guidance/training/support

They didn’t really perform much better. They just had such a crushing numerical advantage that they steamrolled Georgia. Imagine they would have sent about 750k troops for the initial invasion of Ukraine.

    1. Russia actually performed poorer then expected because of old-ass equipment and lack of combat experience. This should have been fixed, especially with the Syria War, but apparently it hasn't much given how poorly they've performed in Ukraine.

    2. Russia was a minor force in the 2008 war in Georgia, and it's more comparable to the Ukraine war between 2015 to 2021 where Russian-backed proxies were more prominent.

    3. Georgia didn't get direct military support from NATO and EU like Ukraine has since 2022.

    4. Georgia was stupid and didn't try anything out of the box like taking the fight to the southern borders of Chechnya and maybe Ingushetia which would have created an opening for insurgents in the North Caucasus to surround Russian forces—and in this scenario, undermine Kadyrov—from the north.

    5. Georgia might have been worried about Armenia which hosts a Russian military base.

Georgia lost when the war kicked off and the sappers failed to destroy the sole land route in
Once that was over their loss was unfortunately inevitable

Russia didn't preform much better, Georgia just crumbled. Russia performed so poorly that a huge reform movement took place a couple months later that was SUPPOSED to fix the military (and did in a few aspects) but angered oligarchs and started asking too many questions so the guy running it got booted

In Georgia, globohomosexual hadn't established a firm presence on the ground, like they had done in Kosovo and Chechnya, where the Saudis and Qataris had spent cash to build mosques and gin up the allahu akhbar fricksticks. Georgia had none of those types so globohomosexual was paralyzed. Fortunately, the Azov nazis could play the islamofascist role in Banderastan, and do globohomo's bidding, all they need is some allahu akhbar gibberish now.

Sadly NATO is not a flawless comicbook superhero who can magically right all wrongdoings and protect everyone.
Even if you had gotten into MAP at that time, you wouldn't have gotten under Article 5 protection in time and that would have led into a complicated situation. Maybe the current world events will end up working in your favor.

Funny how they completely failed that in Ukraine before the invasion. I guess ex-soviets know better.

          >We applied for NATO before the 08 war but you guys refused us. IF we had been accepted no war would have happened.
You don't just get into NATO in one year or even a few years.
Besides, if Russia was a looming shadow then multiple countries would have blocked or postponed Georgia's entry anyways. I'm not just talking about the likes of Germany, but also Bulgaria and Greece who were far more openly Russia-sympathetic then.

But most importantly, you can't get into NATO if you have territorial disputes. A country could just join NATO and then immediately try to get the rest of the alliance to get into a war because of them, which is a burden the others don't want. That's also why Ukraine can't join by default unless they manage to get all territory back. The same with Moldova.

Ukrainians spent much effort to destroy it later with missiles...
