There are plenty of practical reasons to do so, including not being executed yourself for murder if your commando team is captured.
It's trench warfare and Russians are the invading army. They are all going to die in those trenches if the Ukrainians take them. They need to leave the trenches or fight with bare hands vs guns. said. Armor piercing pistol rounds will only defeat soft armor and some helmets. Only law enforcement and security branches really use soft armor. There's a reason guys in the military wear those big bulky plate carriers: they hold large solid plates that even some rifle AP rounds may have trouble getting through (quality plate carriers also offer soft armor in some places for protecting against fragmentation/shrapnel. They also let you attach all kinds of pouches and goodies for easy access). Soft armor used for stopping common pistol calibers is easily concealable under clothing and lightweight.

Kinda. Yes 5.7 in a P90 can beat soft armor with certain ammo. 9mm can with steel core/penetrator. I doubt they have that ammo for either. Also there are many types of body armor. Soft armor is for pistols and any rifle round zips right through. Hard armor (rifle plates) are for stopping rifle rounds and no SMG is getting through those.

said. Armor piercing pistol rounds will only defeat soft armor and some helmets. Only law enforcement and security branches really use soft armor. There's a reason guys in the military wear those big bulky plate carriers: they hold large solid plates that even some rifle AP rounds may have trouble getting through (quality plate carriers also offer soft armor in some places for protecting against fragmentation/shrapnel. They also let you attach all kinds of pouches and goodies for easy access). Soft armor used for stopping common pistol calibers is easily concealable under clothing and lightweight.

They use carbines, which are smaller rifles and supplant any benefit SMG might have had. SMG also fire smaller handgun caliber bullets which would be less effective at penetration and have less range. SMG are for police to shoot crack head Black folk in raids.
