Field modifications and weird irl kitbash shit has always been a thing. If they started doing crazy shit like mounting rocket launchers to motorcycles or some crazy syrianesque shit like that I'd get it but this just looks like they found a cheap and easy way to solve a problem.

It's just an AA platform that has no use since the enemy basically isn't fielding much Air, so they took off the AA missiles and rigged up some rockets that can hit ground targets. USA/etc would probably do the same thing but maybe with an official modification and not just heli pods.

We've seen Ukraine field this exact modification 5-6 days ago. It seemed like desperate kitbashing then, but perhaps they're actually "mass-producing" these because they've judged both the pods and the vehicles to be worthless on their own.

No we didn't. You just made that up so it is less embarrassing that Donbabwe has to field junk already.

why the frick is the Russian air force and anti air so shit?

      Anonymous

Modern military aircraft and anti-air systems are, to use the technical term, 'Really Fricking Expensive' and 'Really Fricking Complicated'. Russia is dead broke, and its uneducated/braindead horde of vatniks would struggle with anything much more advanced than a pointy stick.

The KGB turned Russia into a mafia state and have looted it for all it's worth, they're stuck in a 40K-like state of being iredeemably corrupt and backwards savages inhabiting the ruins of what was once a great empire

The USSR was hardly a wealthy state, in terms of its population. The wealth of the nation was put almost entirely into the military, the leaders luxury lifestyles, and international dickwaving contests. When the flags came down in 1991 and the Russian Federation was born the people with information and power generally stole everything of value, liquidated it, and stashed the money overseas in Swiss bank accounts and their new luxury villas. What money there is in Russia today is mostly dug out of the ground - which is terrible for the population because mines and oil/gas sites can either be leased to foreign companies who won't employ more than a handful of locals, or because they'll run with starving and illiterate peasants and a few (foreign trained) overseers. For Russia to become even a moderately wealthy nation would take decades of investment that the international community has no reason to provide, and that their own political elite don't care about (because they already live lives that would shame the old Tsar, and their children are all educated and working in other countries anyway).

Do the Russians have any old Scuds they could wheel out?

        Anonymous

Scuds are nuclear and chemical capable, if those frickers start going up and a US drone sees it then shit gets way wilder than it needs to be.

          Anonymous

If the Russian land, naval, and air forces are massive shitshows, I can't imagine their NBC capability is much better off.

          Anonymous

You know what else is nuclear capable? Iskander, and Kalibr, and Tochka, and Malka, and Kh-22, and every other large caliber missile or rocket Russia has hit Ukraine with in the last five months. Conventional Scuds aren't an escalation. You'll probably see Luna-M before actual Scuds though.

            >You'll probably see Luna-M

Iskander replaced the SCUD. Its a wee bit smaller, but faster, can do some ewar stuff, and the cruise variant goes farther.

I'm sure they still have SCUDS about.

        >Scuds are nuclear and chemical capable
So is the fricking Kh-22 Russians have been hitting malls with and the fricking Luna-M that predates my father that Ukrainians used yesterday. I don't think you understand how little "nuclear capable" means.

          >Iskander replaced the SCUD
More precisely, Iskander replaced Tochka replaced Luna-M replaced Scud. It's worth mentioning all of them because we've seen all of them used.

            >More precisely, Iskander replaced Tochka replaced Luna-M replaced Scud

No it fricking didn't. They're very different missiles with very different capabilities for payload weight, accuracy, and distance.

    >none found
The context you morons are missing is that those aren't just MT-LBs with rocket pods, they're Strela-10Ms with rocket pods. Which almost certainly means they're Russian or Donbabwean, because Ukraine isn't going to convert SHORAD into shitty assault guns. And the VDV insignia painted on the lead vehicle.

      Anonymous

To be fair, most people who aren't religious Jane's readers or Wargame players won't know about all the varieties of the MT-LB. The Cold War is long gone.

      >Which almost certainly means they're Russian or Donbabwean, because Ukraine isn't going to convert SHORAD into shitty assault guns.
Image is from 2015, when Ukraine had zero need for SHORAD as their enemy did not have air force at all.

  15. 2 years ago

to be fair it is probably a slightly more accurate way of wasting some S-8 rockets as opposed to pitching up a helicopter and letting them go wild

frankly there should be nothing wrong with Russia converting infrared SHORAD into rocket assault guns, because the Russian Air Force should have complete air supremacy. The fact Ukraine continues to successfully sortie Su-25s is embarrassing.
