Guy that doesn't know what he's talking about. Hunting licenses are not easy to get but not impossible. If he didn't have a prior history, he could get one. Or if he just needed ammo, he might have had a buddy that had a hunting license.
As for security, they're fairly lax over there. Abe had only a couple guys guarding him. Japan hasn't been as worried about firearms crimes as America. Their main concerns are bombings, gas attacks, and arsons. Heavy guards won't protect against those types of attacks. Prescreening and preparing the site can mitigate them, but having a dozen secret service types won't. This type of attack just wasn't thought of as likely enough to plan for in Japan.

This is the answer to the question I was asking. The point of saying "My understanding is that X" is to say that my understanding is incomplete and I'd like the opinion/knowledge of someone else who has a more complete understanding. A regular old moronic PrepHole user isn't capable of seeking new information with the purpose of changing their incomplete or flawed opinion though, so I get why he didn't understand

          Anonymous

"My understanding is that X" is not a disclaimer. It was presented like you knew what you were talking about which deserves all the insults and derogatory remarks made about the fact that it wasn't accurate.

It's two pipes around two other pipes taped to a piece of wood. Improvised shotguns are piss easy to make, and the ammo can constitute any flammable powder and whatever projectiles happen to be handy.

If I'm not mistaken, Abe is technically a civilian, so he probably wasn't legally allowed to wear a vest, and he probably had to hire private security who are less likely to shoot a threat in Japan than government personnel, especially with so many civilians around.

Honestly not that surprising, it's based on '50s S&Ws, which were already great guns, and built in very limited numbers to old-school Japanese quality standards. None were really exported so nobody in hasgun countries has experience with them, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were pretty comparable to Manurhins.

Chad Japanese assassin successfully targets a high-profile politician with a homemade gun
Virgin American mass shooter can easily buy an infantry squad's worth of automatic weapons but targets people at the local school or Walmart instead of targeting billionaires or politicians

It's Chad because the perpetrator has almost no chance of getting away successfully. It's a real "sacrifice the rest of my life to kill this guy" sort of situation. The great thing about this shooting is that he targeted an actual elite instead of just shooting some kids at the local school like American disturbed dudes tend to do,.

Every politician is an old man. Stalin was an old man once. I am not saying Abe was Stalin before you start screeching, but using "old man" here is dishonest homosexualry of a high rank.
If you are politician, you can get shot. Thats how it should be by the way, politicians NEED to be afraid of their own people.
In the end, it does not matter if the dude killed him because of something serious, because he made dude's favorite lovepillow factory close down or for completely moronic schizo reason. Politicians need their Franz Ferdinand reminder from time to time.

Wonder why he didn't react to the first shot then, maybe he was in shock?

Because American presidents travel around the US with almost the same level of protection that they would travel around a conquered country like Iraq with, plus America's gun nuts are 99.9% bark and no bite and so the most of the Americans who actually do commit political violence are random crazies who go on a revenge spree against the local school or concert or whatever instead of being dedicated political militants.

I think that it's still a big deal because doing something like that makes the politicians who are in office realize that they might face some consequences later on whether they're still in office or not.

Chad Japanese assassin successfully targets a high-profile politician with a homemade gun
Virgin American mass shooter can easily buy an infantry squad's worth of automatic weapons but targets people at the local school or Walmart instead of targeting billionaires or politicians
Although to be fair of course, it's likely that politicians in Japan have a lot less protection than they do in the US because they don't expect these kinds of things to happen

          >Less than three weeks after the assassination, on 2 November, Yamaguchi mixed a small amount of toothpaste with water and wrote on his cell wall, "Long live the Emperor" and “Would that I had seven lives to give for my country” (七生報国, shichishō hōkoku), the latter a reference to the famous last words of fourteenth-century samurai Kusunoki Masashige.[2] Yamaguchi then knotted strips of his bedsheet into a makeshift rope and used it to hang himself from a light fixture.[2][11]

Suspect is 41 year old Tetsuya Yamagami. He is in custody.
Abe was briefly conscious after being shot.
He was reported to be in cardiac arrest.
He has been airlifted to hospital. Death is not yet confirmed.

      >Death is not yet confirmed.
NHK is reporting "cardiac arrest, no signs of life." It's just a technicality from the hospital at this point.

I by no means agreed with Abe on everything. I certainly feel he got some things wrong, but he also got some things very right. He was a man who dedicated his life to his country. Much more than can be said about most human beings.

Slam bang shotguns still require shells, and Japan has strict regulations on ammo where every round needs to be accounted for if you want to buy more. This was almost certainly a muzzle loader.

In my understanding killing japanese politicians is totally pointless since they all come from old money and massive influential families so the public faces in charge are entirely interchangeable.

Even if you wipe out 90% of Japan off the face of the Earth in an instant, the same exact families will still be in charge.

You are right about them being completely interchangeable, but the people carrying out these attacks are doing it to put fear and chaos into the political system. If the current politicians begin acting rashly out of fear for their lives then everything went according to plan.

What's that? You were late to work by 23.45 seconds once? We can't trust you with a gun!

      Anonymous

About as strict as it gets without completely banning them. The only thing you can get as a regular person is an over/under shotgun and it involves a long process of training, psych evals, background checks, random police inspections in your house, etc. It's possible for some people to get bolt-action or, in very rare cases, "hunting-style" semiautos (I've seen a pic of a Japanese hunter with a Remington 7400 or something similar), but afaik you have to meet special requirements like owning rural land in an area with dangerous wildlife or being some kind of professional hunter.

        >random police inspections in your house
Damn, that's some fricked law. And i'm speaking from europe.

          Anonymous

Yeah, from what I've heard you have to give the police a map of your house with the location of the safe, let them inspect it before you get the gun, and then they can show up unannounced at any time later and make sure you're storing it correctly. I think you have to lock the gun itself, the bolt, and the ammo in separate compartments or containers too, though I'm not sure how that'd work with a break-action shotgun.

          Anonymous

Well technically their constitution straight out bans the possession of weapons of any kind, and then they made limited exceptions

          Anonymous

In my part of Europe it's mandatory to store your guns behind lock and key, but hilariously the cops have no way to inspect your storage arrangement without a warrant

Immense. It makes New York method of background checking look like Arizona's. I recall of an idol who wanted to do skeet and trap shooting go through a month of red tape and background checks before she got clearance.

      Anonymous

      From what I remember it's
      >extensive background checks
      >proof of appropriate "need" (Are you a career hunter? Are bears a legitimate threat in your area?)
      >mandatory training and license renewal every sixish months
      >guns cannot be inherited or passed down
      >every firearm you have is subject to seizure at a moment's notice
      >written local police approval confirming all of the above
Once you get through that rigmarole you're limited to, iirc, shotguns with 3 shell capacity max or a bolt action rifle.

        Anonymous

        >license renewal every sixish months
That's the worse of them. In Spain i only have to show the weapons to the police one time every 5 years.

The conspiracy I read is the shots were supposed to be shot at the same time, but somehow the timing got off so you hear two gunfire.
The current suspect probably their scapegoat in case of interrogation.

I mean he's not even in power anymore, so it would take a serious grudge or mental illness to go through all the trouble of building a gun and throwing your life away for no real reason, so he was probably like "are you fricking kidding me?" at first.

Ah, that's the pic I mentioned earlier, gun appears to be semiauto. I thought I remembered it being a 740/7400 but now that I see it again maybe it's a shotgun, barrel looks skinny so maybe 20ga.

          [...]
Looks like it's actually next to the trigger and would force you to pull the trigger with just your fingertip. Maybe some kind of anti-ND thing, or to make it harder for an assailant to pull the trigger in a struggle?

Yeah, it's a plastic safety plug, like the one popular with Glock owners for a while. Basically you have to push it out with your trigger finger before firing; easy to do, but if some thug grabs your piece, it'll give you a couple seconds to tackle them before they figure it out.

They do pretty much everything to ensure lethal force is the last resort. It's fricked them over before. A few years back there were strings of attacks against random police boxes when schizos with hammers and knives busted in and killed or maimed the cops inside. The first 1-2 rounds in their revolvers are blanks to hopefully "persuade" the attacker into fleeing or surrendering. Obviously doesn't work out too well in situations like that.

The Nambu 60 is in the process of being phased out. SPs usually carry either S&W Model 37 or SIG P230, although they may carry other models. I'm wondering how many of the Model 37s are actually the newer S&W 360J.

Thought that was the Koreans with the blanks? I heard depending on the exact PD most Japanese beat cops only load 4 chambers but those are all 158 grain wadcutters.

              >Thought that was the Koreans with the blanks?
It's a similar story in Japan. Or at least it was. I think the police box attacks might have changed the doctrine for some of them. If they got rid of the blanks or are still using them I doubt they'll ever say.

          Anonymous

The holster looks too long for the S&W, though, and just about right for the Nambu. Maybe the guards for ex-PMs are low on the list to get new guns.

            Anonymous

Probably. There's a lot of Nambu 60s still in inventory, and they're still being issued until maintenance/wear issues become untenable for that specific weapon.

Most likely all the koban attacks probably changed doctrine, like how they started issuing weapons to policewomen after one got kidnapped and raped back in the '70s or '80s.
